Deranged
Earlier this morning I talked about Obama Derangement Syndrome and Bush Derangement Syndrome. Both involve lots of anger, but that's about where the similarity ends. ODS is way more detached from reality, and that's no coincidence. Bob Somerby reminds us today of the granddaddy of them all, Clinton Derangement Syndrome:
Is this attack on Obama “simply nuts?” Actually, yes — it is, quite sadly. But the last time a Democrat went to the White House, the following beliefs were widely asserted — and those beliefs were clinically crazy too....
• As governor, Bill Clinton murdered many rivals.Hillary Clinton was involved.
• As first lady, Hillary Clinton was involved in Vince Foster’s death.
• As governor, Bill Clinton trafficked drugs through Mena, Arkansas.
• Bill Clinton was himself a major coke user. It’s why his nose is so red.
• As a graduate student, Bill Clinton visited Moscow because he was a Soviet agent (or something).
• The Clintons decorated the White House Christmas tree with condoms and drug paraphernalia.
Those beliefs were also clinically insane; they were widely trumpeted and believed all through the 1990s. Indeed, one of the nation’s most famous “Christian leaders” actively pimped the lurid film which detailed the many murders. He remained a cable favorite — and a Meet the Press guest.
Good times. When it comes to being unhinged, you just can't beat movement conservatism.

"When it comes to being
"When it comes to being unhinged, you just can't beat movement conservatism."
I didn't realize that the Truthers were movement conservatives.
CDS...
...or Clinton Derangement Syndrome brings back memories. As I recall his reason for the visit to the USSR was that he'd hears that Beatles song "Back in the USSR" and the line about beautiful young Bolsheviks who would "keep their comrades warm."
More right wing lunatic ravings
As long as we are discussing Clinton derangement syndrome:
* Hillary was promiscuous and had affairs with numerous men including her
Secret Service Agents.
* Hillary was a militant bull dyke who hated men. (consistency is not
the hobgoblin of these little minds)
* Clinton was allowing the U.N. to proceed with planning an invasion of the U.S.
from Canada using Cambodian troops and black helicopters.
* The government was building sites with cyclone fencing with the barb wire on
the top facing in instead of out to imprison Americans in.
* Clinton allowed the U.N. to place bar codes on all street signs in the U.S. so
the Cambodian troops would only need to scan them to establish their location.
yup
I'll repeat the last point in my comment from your other thread:
But as to your claim that "the conservative lunatic brigade appeared so goddamn fast," um, did you sleep through the Clinton administration? Seriously, what's your excuse for such a lazy comment? This has been going on for decades. It didn't all of a sudden come to life when Obama decided to run. Batshit craziness among conservatives has been alive & well for decades, and it isn't limited to fringe groups, like Birchers or LaRouchies. It's hardwired into the DNA of virtually the entire Republican Party, and it's been there since at least McCarthy.
Movement conservatism
Kevin wrote: "When it comes to being unhinged, you just can't beat movement conservatism."
"Movement conservatism" ceased to be a political or ideological movement a long time ago, and became an entertainment demographic, like the audience for snuff films, or dog fights. That's why this stuff more closely resembles pornography than it does traditional political propaganda. It's infotainment for people who just love to hate.
What is so weird is that
What is so weird is that these people get on TV and other MSM outlets! Again and again! and the liberal equivalents never do? Again and again! so much for the liberal bias in the MSM
You forgot Bush planning
You forgot Bush planning 9/11. Doesn't that pretty much take the cake?
Why did the president invade
Why did the president invade Iraq?
Beyond Somerby . . .
. . . Joe Conason notes that many of the same bad actors from the Clinton years -- Limbaugh, Newsmax, WorldNutDaily -- are still on the case:
http://www.politickerny.com/4774/what-are-birthers-really-after
And to further Junebug's point: the Republican habit of seeing Democrats in the White Hiouse as "illegitimate" goes back quite a ways. FDR violated sacred tradition by runing for third and fourth terms, JFK "stole" his election, the liberal media defeated Goldwater and later cleared the way for Carter by driving Nixon from power, and so on . . .
It was the Democrats who
It was the Democrats who said Bush was illegitimate.
Huh?
which of the dem senators or reps said this? I'm a democrat, and it's the first time I've heard such nonsense.
Everybody knows that
Hell, everyone knows that Clinton visited Moscow as a student because his daddy was the secret love child of Rasputin and the Tsarina.
Everybody knows that.
Oops
Kevin, your last post on this topic was much better, and this one doesn't really jive with that one. While Lou Dobbs is a MSM guy who (apparently? I don't watch) openly questions BO's birthplace, none of the things mentioned about Clinton was really discussed openly by anyone in the MSM. There was the occasional chatter about Vince Foster stuff, but most of it was simply about what a p-hound Bill was.
The Clinton stuff was much like the Bush stuff. Dan Rather types never came out and said anything like "I bet Clinton was involved in Foster's death", nor did they say "9/11 was an inside job".
not so fast
Try googling "Wall Street Journal + Vince Foster." Official investigations by the FBI, the DOJ, Congress, & two separate independent counsels weren't conducted just to satisfy some grassy knoll freaks.
Now you've done it.
Well, now you've done it. You've just set yourself up for another pointed correction from Mr. Somerby. It wasn't "movement conservatism" that was to blame for the spread of deranged Clinton fantasies. The real story is that our press and liberal pundits sat by and said nothing at all while these stories were promoted widely--sometimes even repeating uncritically in mainstream news outlets. Case in point: review Gennifer Flowers' appearances on Hardball.
ah, remember...
(Posted elsewhere)..
Y’all owe it to yerselves to read this short except of the Gary Aldrich Book where the claims of crack pipes and condoms on the White House tree apprears: http://www.cuttingedge.org/news/n1224.cfm.
It’s not for the faint of heart, and probably reveals more about Mr. Aldrich’s preoccupations than anything about the Executive Mansion’s Christmas Decoration.
I actually had artwork (a fiber snowman in sunglasses and an overshot weave scarf) on a White House tree. These ornaments from artists were vetted by the State Art’s councils who solicited them. We had to sign letters of confidentiality, and promise to wait for the White House/Georgia Council for the Arts press release to go public with it. What Aldrich claims is really batshit crazy, and someone should definitively disprove it.
But for me, the UrScadal of the Clinton years was Travelgate:
how dare these people from Arkansas remove that nice man in the White House Travel Office who made such good travel arrangement for the White House Press Corps (even if his accounting was, well, sketchy)? When David Broder said “they trashed the place, and It’s not their place” he was referring to the conspicuous lack of mints on his hotel pillows. More seriously, the Press Corps lost an inside contact, and must have has signally less cushy travel arrangements…
The Clinton’s didn’t cover themselves with glory here; but here is where the Washington Insiders saw the possibilities of manufactured scandal and endless investigations.
CDS same as BDS same as ODS
How was Bush Derangement Syndrome different from Clinton Derangement Syndrome? Off the top of my head, some left-winger beliefs about Bush/Cheney:
- Bush was behind 9/11, knew about, was in cahoots with Saudis, etc, etc,
- Bush invaded Afghanistan because he wanted to build a pipeline through it
- we invaded Iraq so that Haliburton could make money
- the neocon cabal (aka The Jews) took over Bush administration - presumably to drink blood of christian babies (ok, just kidding about that last part)
- we invaded Iraq because Israel controls Bush administration
- Bush hides the true number of casualties in Iraq
- Bush went AWOL from his National Guard Service
- Bush wants to take away our liberties and install fascism
- Bush political opponents end up on no-fly list, Homeland Security surveillance, etc, etc.
.... and on and on. Not that BDS justifies ODS.
Loonies
Look, you can dig up all kind of crazy ideas on the internet. But I don't recall any mainstream politician spouting any of this. I also don't recall any mainstream t.v. shows spouting any of this with the exception of the Bush AWOL story. And isn't it kind of a fact that "neocon" thinking dominated Bush foreign policy thinking? I've never heard the link, though, that "neocons" was synonymous with "jews."
You forgot one!
You forgot the craziest anti-Clinton charge of all: that he sexually harassed Paula Jones, then lied about it under oath, and then he had to pay her $900,000 and he lost his law license for perjury!
Hoo-boy! They don't get much crazier than that.
Hey look, it's Steve Sailor,
Hey look, it's Steve Sailor, racist extraordinaire!
Clinton Derangemnet Syndrome
Let us not forget the grandaddy of them all, Roosevelt Derangement Syndrome. i remember reading years ago about rumors of demented cackling emitting from the White House back in the 30's. For the most part Republicans cannot deal with a Democrat in the White House.
dual
As much as there were elements of Bill Clinton I always admired, especially being a fighter and winner from an intelligence base of operations, the wing nuts back in his presidential days didn't make it easy to be a critic of both Bill and the Democratic Party, from a progressive viewpoint, since his enemies and detractors were so deranged and delusional, it was hard not to feel the urge to defend against that nonsense at the same time you felt strongly we were not getting things done from a progressive standpoint, at least as well as we could have with a more focused and less-concerned-with-kissing-corporate-butt mentality.
I agree, Kevin.
All those "Bush was behind 9/11" types are really quite reasonable.
" • As governor, Bill
" • As governor, Bill Clinton murdered many rivals.Hillary Clinton was involved.
• As first lady, Hillary Clinton was involved in Vince Foster’s death.
• As governor, Bill Clinton trafficked drugs through Mena, Arkansas.
• Bill Clinton was himself a major coke user. It’s why his nose is so red.
• As a graduate student, Bill Clinton visited Moscow because he was a Soviet agent (or something)."
If anyone has any actual evidence proving any of these accusations are false, I'd really like to see it. I'm a very leftist person who doesn't believe anything the Republicans say. I've been following the story very closely from the beginning. I have as yet not seen any evidence at all that these accusations are not true. All I have seen is endless complaints by Democrats that the Republicans always lie, and that these are just ridiculous accusations. Well, if that's true, then where's the proof? I've seen nothing. And if is absolutely impossible at this point to deny the fact that the Clintons are and have been extremely corrupt people. A simple look at their finances proves that conclusively. And they certainly have connections with organized crime, to begin with, with both the Democratic and Republican parties, which are certainly organized crime syndicates.
Good grief
The Clintons may well be venal, but the burden of proof is on you. No one has to prove a negative. If you assert that Bill Clinton is murderous drug runner, you have to prove it. Get to work.
You should know immediately
You should know immediately if you are slipped a multivitaman because your pee will turn deep orange.
As a non-vitamin-popping English friend once told me, "Americans have the most expensive urine in the world."
