Ft. Hood Massacre
Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer. The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.
The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.
Oh Lord. This is very, very bad. And it's going to get worse.

SSRIs ?
Someone please look into the possibility that Major Hasan was on SSRIs. NPR is reporting that he may have been a psychologist.

We don't know enough yet
What do SSRIs have to do with this? Millions of people are on them and don't go on shooting rampages. We don't know enough to speculate at this point.
There's some debate right now
that when some people suddenly go OFF SSRIs they are more prone to suicide and homicide.
BS. I was on SSRIs for
BS. I was on SSRIs for years, and I had no urge to kill anyone -- myself or anyone else -- when I went off them.
I get so tired of people blaming everything else but the criminal. This wasn't a drug's fault, or a gun's fault. The guy was a lunatic.
All the guns on the biggest
All the guns on the biggest army base in the US didn't stop this guy from shooting, what I'd guess, is a record number of people.
I don't think this should be described as a suicide bombing. I think it's more like a spree killing or a school shooting inspired by suicide bombings.
The distinction I'd say is that the killer targeted his familiar environment while suicide bombers never do.
Ya know, if you weren't so
Ya know, if you weren't so ignorant you'd be funny. As it is, you're merely as poster child for know nothings.
Do some research on how many troops at that base in the theater, and the surrounding area had guns.
Pretty much gun control area and therefore your own statements seem to say gun control causes these things.
guns?? in texas??
ok...i'll bite.
school me. tell me how much gun control exists on the larges military base in the u.s. and in frakking texas!!
i am fully prepared to be wrong about my assumption that there is no lack of weaponry and ammo owned privately by soldiers or on a military base and that texas is among the least gun-controlled states in the nation...have i been misled?
please...reassure me.
Unless given guns for a
Unless given guns for a specific training exercise, troops on a base are unarmed. Period. Consider yourself schooled.
Another factor is that he
Another factor is that he was given a poor job performance evaluation at Walter Reed.
He wasn't very good at his job and he was being deployed into exactly the circumstance where he would be most needed, most responsible and have the greatest likelihood of failure while at the same time having the external pressure of political Islam bearing upon him.
Let the families bury their dead and nurture the wounded
These speculations, although very natural, are best kept to oneself for now.

I believe if you read down the rest of the comments this morning, the answer will become apparent.

What a tragedy. I feel so bad for the families of the wounded and deceased. Within 24 hours, Rush Bimbo and Glen Beck will blame this all on President O'Bama.

I'm normally as reliable as a lefty as they come. Healthcare, cap-and-trade, abortion, soaking the rich, public transportation, LGBT rights... hey, if there's a march somewhere, chances are I'm in it.
But not when it comes to Islam. Then, I become a winger somewhere to the right of Michelle Malkin because I cannot change the loathing I have for this evil, evil religion and many of its adherents, its twisted ignorance, its hatred of science and knowledge, its enslavement of women, its glorification of murder, its killing of LGBT people. Nor can I tolerate relativistic comparisons to other religions. Muslim fundies make our homegrown Christian fundies look like Enlightenment philosphers, and I say this even though I can't stand the winger Christian fundies.
So normally I keep my mouth shut about it while in polite company. But not today. To hell with that. We have a problem and we can no longer remain silent.

Islam shouldn't be painted with so broad a brush. This coming from the godless heathen himself.
You're conflating Islam, the
You're conflating Islam, the religion, with the cultural practices of some of its adherents. There was a time when the Islamic world were the most civilized, progressive societies on earth. They were responsible for major, major advances in science, mathematics, and were largely responsible for the preservation of the holy books of Christianity.
To take the actions of some hateful Muslims as representative of the whole is, well, that's the same attitude they use when they try to whip up hate against us decadent Westerners. If you're really a progressive, you should be better than that.
I know
I know.
I should be better than that, and normally I keep a lid on it. But then something like this happens and I flip out and it all comes rushing out on some blog comments section somewhere and I feel like shit 10 minutes later... anyway I apologize to anyone here who might have been offended by my outburst.

I disagree with your earlier comment and said so, but tell anyone who is offended by your outburst to get their head out of their ass.
JFC, nimrod, this last comment of yours is way more offensive than your first.

You don't know shit about
You don't know shit about boring, ordinary Muslims and you lash out at what you see on TV. Fair enough, everyone outside America thinks it's the set of Miami Vice.

Islamic, Muslim, Middle Eastern
tagged as:- solution
It has been far beyond my comprehension why our country remains tolerant of people of Middle Eastern influence who reside in this country. Albeit many are not enemies of this country we really have little clue as to what it takes for them to flip to be more a part of al qaeda or any other terrorist organization or part of the movement to unseat America. My country men and women should realize that other parts of the world live with very little to nothing and the USA looks too good to be true. If they think they can unseat us they will not stop, EVER. It s time to show them all of our might, detain or ship out all who live here until this is all over and then get out whatever, and I do mean whatever, weapons we have to annihilate them if annihilation is what they want. Our country has paid too big a price to sit here and think that this can happen here on our own soil. This will not be the end of it althought our government of liberals will tell us this is a random and infrequent act not associated with the war over seas. Why? Because they don t want panic amongst the women and children and the general population, who will call for every officials resignation that now disserves our country by their lack of will to initiate the steps to beat these uncivilized morons into submission. PUSH THE BUTTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ft. Hood (What Pat said)
I love this; way to say it....I haven't heard annihilate since the book of Esther! I agree; they won't be missed by this American citizen!!! I know this may not be what God wants to hear out of my mouth, but this is the kind of act that makes it hard to "love all, treat all and respect all" equally!!!! How can you love your islamic neighbor as you love yourself when you have no idea whether or not they would love to blow your head right off your shoulders???? Let's send'em all back to where they came from and annihilate'em all!!! Good riddance!
...
And you wouldn't be missed, either.
Don't you think this stupid, unfounded eliminationist rhetoric just might have something to do with the stress on soldiers who profess a faith other than born again christian?
When home-grown muslims have killed as many as home-grown christian militants, we'll talk.
But currently, it's only news if some christian actually shoots more than one person, or a famous person like Dr Tiller. If it's only one or two people, it doesn't make the news. Not big enough. Because that happens every day in the US of A.
I think giving out the
I think giving out the Middle Eastern sounding name of the perpetrator is hate speech. No doubt this will give ammunition to patriotic Americans who value freedom and national security over diversity.
Yeah, yeah, a dozen die in
Yeah, yeah, a dozen die in an unforgivable tragedy... the only solution is to kill millions. It's funny, Israel has been pacifying the West Bank, Gaza, and southern Lebanon for decades, Hamas or Hezbollah will beg for mercy any day now... I will say that as someone who has never served in the military (like Cheney, Bill Safire, Rush Limbaugh, etc...) I can't wait for someone else to be shipped off to yet another foreign war.
in response to Pat
What the hell is the matter with you people? You seriously want to round up a couple million people, deport them, and then use whatever "weapons we have to annihilate them" all? Granted, you seem to condition this on whether or not "annihilation is what they want," and so since I'm pretty sure almost no "people of Middle Eastern influence" actually desire annihilation, maybe you're just letting off some steam with an empty threat. But seriously, advocating "beat[ing] these uncivilized morons into submission"? What sort of murderous thug are you?
More broadly speaking, I'd like to off all condolences I may offer over the internets to the victims and their families and friends, no matter what color or geographical persuasion they might be. This is a horrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to you.
Anyone else have a flashback
Anyone else have a flashback to "Yanqui Doodle" by James Tiptree Jr? That story freaked me out when I first read it, and it's just a matter of time before it becomes reality.
I wish I could remember
I wish I could remember that. Thanks just for mentioning James Tiptree Jr./Alice Sheldon. Many fond memories.
not a flashback
I remember that story, although I had to google the title. I don't think it applies, exactly, since the purported perpetrator isn't a battle-scarred veteran and the victims aren't the movers and shakers. At this point it's very far from clear what sort of narrative will make sense of events. It seems unlikely that one man could take out two dozen soldiers with pistol fire.
If the muslim name of this
If the muslim name of this mass killer proves that Islam is an "evil religion", what do the names of these other American mass killers of recent decades prove:
Huberty, James Oliver (21) Hennard, George Jo (23) Essex, Mark James Robert (9) Sherrill, Patrick Henry (14) Farley, Richard Wade (7) Wesbecker, Joseph Thomas (8) Ferri, Gian Luigi (8) Barton, Mark Orrin (12) Whitman, Charles Joseph (15) Barbaro, Anthony (3) Purdy, Patrick Edward (5) Houston, Eric Christopher (4) Golden, Andrew and Johnson, Mitchell (5) Kinkel, Kipland Philip (4) Harris, Eric David and Klebold, Dylan Bennet (13) Williams, Charles Andrew (2) Weise, Jeffrey James (9) Roberts, Charles Carl (5) Ruppert, James Urban (11) Banks, George Emil (13) Thomas, Christopher (10) Simmons, Ronald Gene (16) Pardo, Bruce Jeffrey (9) Burke, David (42) McVeigh, Timothy (168).

Gun Control on Military Bases

There is comprehensive gun control on all military bases in the States, far more than in almost any US city. Neither hidden nor open carrying of personal weapons on base is allowed. The usual base weapons regulations require all privately owned guns on base to be stored in an armory. All personnel living off base are forbidden to carry their personal weapons on base. And, of course, military-issued weapons can only be carried in the line of duty and are otherwise stored in armories. The gun control regs are even more stringent in overseas US military bases, unless in a combat zone.
Practically speaking, that means the only armed people on any non-combat US military base are the security police, usually no more in number than might be found in a medium-sized town. For the most part, people living and working on US military bases are totally unarmed, except during training.
The rules are stringently enforced and compliance is near total, since non-compliance can ruin a career. Of course, no gun control regime can stop the determined rule breaker bent on killing.
...
That's odd, every time I've toured a military base in the US, I've seen the guard blatantly violating the no-weapon areas while on break.
The Guard

Reaching a bit, aren't you? I think the operative word is "guard." The guards belong to the base security forces which are armed. Like all cops, they carry their weapons on break, because they are still on duty. There aren't any "no weapons areas" for on duty security personnel. No rule violation.
What crime? What tragedy?
Finally, after all these years, a US Army soldier appears with moral conviction and courage to match it, and this is a crime and a tragedy? These "victims" were volunteer war criminals. That they were prevented by deadly force from committing their crimes is a good thing. If this is truly the land of the free and the home of the brave, there will be a lot more of these summary executions. We can only hope.
Not only is your claim wrong
Not only is your claim wrong on the facts, there being civilians among the casualties, it's utterly reprehensible. Collective punishment, attacks on unarmed people not on the field of battle, these are themselves the actions of war criminals.
Killing in the military
Why on earth do we question that a man whose life was part of the culture of killing--and no, I don't mean Islam, I mean the military--decides to kill? Kill, kill, kill, that's what the military does. And no, he wasn't different because he was a psychiatrist. All that means is that he was steamed in the pressure cooker of the worst of the killing; imagine the stories that he heard in his position, as he dealt with the worst of the PTSD and the worst of the killings-gone-wrong from Iraq and Afghanistan. Killing is the military's answer to everything, why are we surprised when a member of the military uses it as an answer to his own questions and a salve to his own pain. Kill, kill, kill. Until we find another response to international conflict, we can expect more of the same horror.
"Killing is the military's
"Killing is the military's answer to everything, why are we surprised when a member of the military uses it as an answer to his own questions and a salve to his own pain."
The only comment I would make is that, while the military certainly has some responsibility, this is very much more a US pathology than a US military pathology. It is the US as a society that sees violence as the solution to all problems --- and it is US society, not US politicians, not US media.
Sadly I don't see this ending until the US gets hurt as badly as other countries have been by war. That day is probably coming, but it will not be a happy one.
Fragged
I'm going to go out on a limb & guess that this guy was deathly afraid of getting fragged once he was deployed (ala Pat Tilman) & snapped.
Tragic? Yeah. A direct product of our military system? Yep.
And all you Muslim-haters here - whether you call yourself liberal or conservative - the world seems muffled because you've stuck your head where the sun don't shine - again.
I absolutely agree with Pat.
I absolutely agree with Pat. After Republican anti-government right wing nut Tim McVeigh killed 168 people, I too wondered how long the people of this country would remain tolerant of the treasonous know nothings who reside in this country. Albeit not all of them formed anti-government militias or committed seditious acts. Americans really have little clue as to what it takes for them to flip to be more a part of a domestic terrorist organization or part of the movement to unseat the duly elected government.
Wake up people and confront this threat before these traitors kill more innocent children.

weapons that anyone could buy, anywhere.
Those 13 dead people, and 30 others victims, are a small price to pay for that guy being able to own a gun.
What
What Americans are loathe to recognize, especially our government and the left, is that Islam is at war with us. Until we declare war on Islam we will continue to have these type incidents.
All Muslims on active duty should be discharged and anyone who converts should be discharged. Having the honor of being an American serviceman is not a "right".
"When home-grown muslims
"When home-grown muslims have killed as many as home-grown christian militants, we'll talk."
Well, we have at least 31 today, thanks to Hasan. We also have a couple of others from 2003 - when the Muslim threw a grenade into a tent of sleeping US soldiers.
So that's at least - what - 33?
How many "home-grown christian militants" murdered in the name of their religion and Jesus?
Zero.
McVeigh didn't kill anyone because of Jesus. He murdered hundreds because he hated the U.S. government. The same government that Hasan hates, and Al-Qaeda hates.
I just love how tough you progressives are when it comes to Christianity. You mock Christians, mock their God and his Son. You get federal NEA money to create works of "art" like piss Christ and fashioning Mary out of elephant shit. You mock anyone who opposes this, telling them that art is supposed to "push boundaries" and "make you think."
Well, buck up cowards. Start making some art that "pushes the boundaries" of Islam. I dare you.
Except you won't. You know that would mean a death sentence. Don't believe me? Ask Salman Rushdie. Or the Dutch filmmaker gunned down in the street for daring to make a movie critical of Islam.
Good old Steve Benen over at Washington Montly has a cute little "This Week in God" feature on his blog. Every Friday, he castigates the progressive's favorite bugbear: Christianity.
Benen has never criticized Islam. Ever. Coward.
I'm sure liberals and progressives will bend over backwards to defend poor old Hasan and his much maligned religion.
It makes me wonder why you defend Islam so much, considering how they treat gays. Sure, Christians don't want to see gays get married, but they don't stone them. Christians might not like divorce, but they don't stone the women (and ignore the filandering man) who do so. Christians don't execute those who switch religions.
But yes, let's not judge Hasan or Islam or Al-Qaeda or anyone else. Why? Because of all those Christian militants.
But that's not the real reason. The real reason is that progressives are, at heart, cowards.
