John McCain and the Dictator Money Trail

mccain_closeup_250x200.jpg John McCain will fire you for lobbying for Burma, but he'll still take your money.

Republican operatives Doug Davenport and Doug Goodyear were both quietly released from their duties with the McCain campaign this week when it was revealed that their Washington lobbying firm, DCI Group, had been paid $348,000 to represent Burma's repressive military junta in 2002. McCain's critics noted that top McCain aide Charlie Black has lobbied for authoritarian regimes as nasty or worse than Burma's, raising the question of whether McCain will cut ties with tainted figures only when it is politically expedient for him to do so.

There are other facts in the situation that may prove controversial. The two lobbyists for Burma were also donors to McCain. Doug Goodyear, DCI Group's chief executive and the man McCain had selected to run the GOP national convention, and his wife Carla donated $4,600 to McCain's presidential campaign and $2,500 to McCain's Straight Talk America PAC. Carla Goodyear also donated $1,000 to McCain's 2004 Senate reelection bid. Doug Davenport, the head of DCI Group's lobbying arm and a former regional campaign manager for McCain, and his wife Kelley contributed $6,900 to McCain's presidential campaign and $3,500 to his PAC.

Other DCI Group employees have donated $2,000 to McCain. All told, DCI Group employees and their spouses have sent $20,500 to McCain. McCain fired the two DCI Group executives from his campaign, but will he return their contributions? We called McCain's press office to ask and have not yet received a response. Can it be that McCain is willing to separate himself from lobbyists working for Burma but will cling to their cash?

Bloomberg News notes that Obama's decision "is likely to produce a cascade of money for unofficial campaign groups that until now have been on the wane? Republicans say the result will be that McCain supporters will be more likely to open their wallets to outside groups akin to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the organization whose efforts damaged Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry four years ago. 'Obama not taking the public financing provides the catalyst for Republican donors to get increasingly involved,' said Stuart Roy, a one-time aide to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican."

I think he's dishonest. Simple as that.

I agree Bert...don't trust him as far as I can throw him.

He's a Republican ain't he? Well then it goes without saying that he's dishonest and greedy enough to do business with the lobbyist pals of foreign dictators, and whores. How many times is it that McSame has been married, again?

As Deep Throat said to the two reporters in the bowels of the darkened parking garage, "Follow the money."

Mr. McCain has taken so much corporate money from lobbyists that we can easily predict what he will do as our president. It's no secret that Big Business runs our government, and John McCain will surely do their bidding.

Since it looks like Obama is going to get the nod, he's got my vote. Why? He took no corporate money. That, in itself, is a refreshing change.

It is interesting how the McCain camp managed this little news items by releasing it on Friday and the national media played right into their hands. This is a much more important issue than the rantings of a preacher. It reveals more about McCain than any of his "mister goody two shoes" image. Didn't he know who these guys were and what they did before they came to his campaign? Or was he stupid enough to think that their ties to the Burma dictators would not be discovered? In any case, this episode gives us a clear glimpse into what a McCain administration will look like. It makes George Bush's administration look competent.

Myanmar hits the news... people search, lobbyists migrate. Same old story.

However, the "internets" is screwing with their ability to manage information until it's less toxic from the public's viewpoint.

...it's a bunch of tubes, you know?

This crusty old curmudeon's whole campaign staff consists of potential K-Streeters. This fiasco with Mayammar is just a single glaring demonstration of Grampers' glaring dishonesty and treachery among a gazillion less frequently reported stories.

McCain is either an idiot or he is mentally unstable. He said in 2006 he was willing to sit down and talk to the bad guys now he says he will not in any way form or manner have any discussions. He sounds like McBush. We need to know if he suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

It is Myanmar, it was Burma. Get current. I guess you are saying McCain knew of the 2 workers and the Myanmar (Burma) connection. Most americans did not know what a Myanmar is, much less a country, until the recent outbreak of violence had hit that country.
Obama did know what a Tony Rezko is and took $150000 donation and did not return it until it was stuck under his nose. I am also waiting for him to denounce the Jane (the POW Murderer)Fonda endorsement.
When you get a real story, use it, but don't make a nothing into a something. Burma, get with it.

Yes they let after it was disclosed. But no one has aasked McCain about this mutual funds investments. One of them is listed for investing in the Junta in Burma. I wonder if he will get rid of that if exposed. Remember this is the guy who never got tortured in vietnam as a POW,but freely gave Hanoi free press against America.

When more than 100 people working for your campaign are lobbyists, something is extremely wrong.

McCain is dishonest and way of out touch and if by chance he becomes the next Prez, he will put the final spike in this nation's coffin.

Att.Sen Zuni there is only one God and it isn't John McCain someday you will be judged and get to know the real God.

It is doubtful that McCain knew of this, while Saint Obama sat in a church for 20 years and asked no questions about his sweetheart deal with Rezko. Obama also didn't see 11 slum building in his own small ward that developed due to his writing letters to help Rezko obtain funding for the buildings as he pocketed the cash. Why do you think Rezko is on trial? Now, can anyone tell me how Diane Feinstein's net worth jumped from under $5 million before the war to "check the box marked $37 million to $99 million"? ANS: She sat on the Senate committe that awarded military contracts and her husband's firm receivd many no-bid contracts! She was poised to chair the committee and when an investigative reporter broke the story she quietly resigned. This is why America ranks 37th, well behind Bulgaria, in factual news reported to its people. If you are a democrat, you get away with anything now in America. And if anyone thinks Obama's is going to bring about change they are as loony as he is. With Rezko he met an Iraqi billionaire...TWICE! Now since a US Senator needs to walk around with his hand out 24/7 to be able to run a $30 million+ campaign for re-election, one must suspend all rational thought to think he didn't recalling meet A BILLIONAIRE! He also just happned to "loan" Tony Rezko $3.5 million three weeks before Obama close on his home with a $300,000 discount and Rezko's wife, making $37,000 a year, bought a $600,000 piece of property next door from the same seller at the asking price on the same day. Obama honest? You must be out of your minds. He epitomizes the dirt in the Daley Chicgo machine!

While the nations home owners are having difficulty with mortgage loans, guess who was instrumental in deregulation of the lending institutions so that speculators could make millions with the Housing Industry? Phil Graham, a lobbyist and consultant to John (flip-flopper)McCain. In fact, he was promoting the Economic plan for John McCain's run for the Presidency.

And what is Obama? A saint? He has the perpetrators of this whole crisis on as his economic advisors! Johnson and Rains?? How about being the #2 in money given from Freddie and fannie. Has he given it back? Ah what about Tony Rezco, you know, the slum lord that "obama the community activist" built low income housing for Rezko to flease the poor? Who bought Obama's house?
