MOJO VIDEO: Mad for McCain (Starring "Tito the Builder")

At a John McCain rally in Virginia this past weekend, Mother Jones ran into a group of angry and frustrated McCain supporters looking for reporters to yell at. The now famous "Tito the Builder" was front and center. Here's what happened.

I am not sure if I am sick or sad watching these ill informed, angry for no reason, crowd of undereducated folks. I wonder if this is about abortion or religion and nothing else. I respect you if you do not want to vote for Obama because of the abortion issue. You are a single issue voter, fine. But to deny checking the facts and reading what non-partisan folks have to say about the candidates' issue is just pure unadulterated ignorance. So what they say is that they believe Palin and McCain face value on the crap that comes out of their mouth. I wonder what will happen if Obama wins this election and these people start seeing prosperity and a better life. Will they deny Obama is responsible for it? Let me guess, they will say it is luck. I can't help to feel there is an underlying reason for their angry?perhaps bigotry, perhaps ignorance, perhaps machismo. Sad state we live in.

The Entitlement Mentality of "We the People" of This Nation

This is the way people in America are thinking these days; they want the government to help them in everything they need. They want free money to pay for colleague; they want the government to pay for their health care, pay for their mortgage, and also free coupons for food and money for gasoline. Americans who
don't pay federal income tax want the government to give then a tax rebate (you mean a wealth fare check).
Hey, it is a great idea if that is the way we have to start thinking in America. I came from a country where 90 % of people think that way. The government, the big Father of every American, we the people are not capable of taking care of ourselves any more; we can't do for us or our families any better than the bureaucrat, intellectuals or elite are telling us. Yes, we Americans can't do anything anymore; we need to import cars from Japan, Europe and Korea, clothes from India, Pakistan, Mexico and other places, oil from the Middle East for our energy needs.
Of course the liberals Democrats know better than "we" the rest of the people; they tell me that because I am a minority (Born in Colombia, but made in the U.S.A.) They are for my best interest. Which interest? Only when I agreed with their philosophy am I special to them. But, if I don't think the way they believe, I am another stupid immigrant, moron, brain washed idiot, and illegal immigrant (although I am a newly naturalized American citizen), and many other derogatory and discriminating names that the liberal Democrats are using against me. They use these titles the same way that other ignorant bigots have used pejoratives against me in previous encounters. God bless America for the opportunity of discovering the true color of liberal Democrats (and what they really think of people like me).
I lived in New York for many years. I lived in East Harlem, East New York Brooklyn, and the South Bronx, I started out broke, a simple poor worker at the age of seventeen. Yes I have had my difficulties; yes I have made mistakes like many other people; yes I know the pain of being discriminated against by people of different ethnicity and backgrounds. I know how people have looked down on me. But that is not the America that I know. America is the nation of equality, not because an intellectual, elitist, bureaucrat or politician tells me so. I know this because I discovered it in the great history of this nation, in the Declaration of Independence, in our Constitution and in the philosophy of our founding fathers.
Gladly I left that entitlement society that was not good for me. I was able to go, move out and go to college in Northern Virginia and with joy I finished an Associate degree in construction management, and I completed another in civil engineering. With the help of my wife and my step children I was able for almost 10 years of working in the day time and going to school at night I made it (I paid for my tuition, my books and supplies for every class that I took with my own money). It was very difficult. It was very stressful for my family, but the results that we have are paying off.

Thank you for criticizing me, liberal Democrats. Like in the past, many people told me that I could not be anything better than a laborer, they made fun of my accent, they laughed at the way I mispronounced a world, they looked down on me, and they patronized me. But, that is ok for me. I know who you are and I am convinced that I don't belong in your political group. These destructive criticisms have always made me more determined in my goals. You Liberal Democrats push me down and I will stand up; you can make fun of me and I will salute you. When you insult me I will pray for you; look down on me and I will help you when you need some help. America is full of greatness with people who helped me grow, who appreciate the way I am, like my boss Ralph Duca, a person that game the opportunity to get a better position (knowledge and salary) at the first company I worked for, people who believed in me and took a chance. People like Ronnie White, a cranky boss who helped me learn everything he knew in the construction trade when I was a laborer; people like George Aste, Mike Denning, Ronnie East and his wife Paulet, and many other great Americans who helped me in many ways and helped us to grow our company. To those Americans, thank you and God bless you and for the rest that don't know me, yes, for you also I say thank you for preserving this great nation and for making the American Dream a reality for me. God bless America and God bless you.
This nation was created on the idea of individual innovation, tenacity, and perseverance, and the notion of a limited government; a government with balance powers, a government of the people, not a government that takes care of people or controls its people. Some citizens want to be tied to a politician for their own needs; some others like me don't need a politician help for my needs. The only thing I want is for the future government to fight to maintain the preservation of the America that our Founding Fathers created for us. That is the America that our children need, not the America that imposes a society of entitlement on the people. Our Democracy will crumble to the abyss if the people of America believe that the government knows better than "we" the people. Be careful with the intellectual's ideas of the new America, be careful of the politician when he calls for change: what change, or change to what? Be careful of the promise of solutions to your troubles. Be careful when every think sounds too good. Be careful when a future elected official tells you that he is going to take care of the nation's problems; the politicians are selling ideas that sound too good, but what will be the price that you and I will pay for it? We the people will be subjected to a nation of bureaucrats that will make all our decision and guide our future for us and we will feel that we don't know any better. Be careful?.Be careful Americans

what a bunch of idiots.

no profile pic for comment author

not as bad as the freaks Al Jazeera dug up, but man, angry people with bad information.... it's sad really, and it makes me fear for Obama's safety.

no profile pic for comment author

How uninformed and rabid the right these people are. I know because I have family like them - they will vote against their best interest every time.
The foreign-born black woman thinking that she and Joe the Plumber are the same and that John McCain and his party are going to represent her? Pathetic.

no profile pic for comment author

So what if Muslims contribute to Obama. That you think it's wrong shows how ignorant you are about Islam.

no profile pic for comment author

i think the fact that joe is a frigging liar is the reason it matters. what the hell does rangel have to do with obama anyways?
the people in this video are so out of touch it is amazing. at the end they're mad at bush and they still think we should vote for republican? they're out of the damn minds!

no profile pic for comment author

Christine,

Joe the Plumber is definitely small potatoes, but you seem to have no realization of how much has been left unsaid about John McCain's opportunistic past. The pot better watch its back when it calls the kettle black. Impressive that you called Corn "Obama's b****". But I really don't think you're all that tough. You act like a spoiled little girl.

no profile pic for comment author

Sad. Too bad the foreign born black woman and the Hispanic construction worker are too unevolved and uneducated to realize they will never be part of McCain's club.

no profile pic for comment author

I agree with Paul Miller and Julia, these people are buying into a lie. It just goes to show how quickly the tide can turn. Nazi party anyone??? These people would undoubtedly round up their own fellow man for a 2000 year text and a clown like Bush and the Sorry excuse for a Former TV anchor/Sportscaster i.e. Sara Pallin. Someone should interest these folks in some pixie dust and how to buy up some property in Care Bear Land seems they will believe anything!!!

no profile pic for comment author

They seem agitated and misinformed, but at somewhat rational, especially the one who said who is elected will be bust fixing Bush's mistakes. He got that right, even if they would fix them in very different ways, assuming McCain's fixes can really be called "fixes" rather than "repetitions".

Socialists! Socialists!

no profile pic for comment author

What a biased website...motherjones.com

It is disgraceful and the folk at the rally were correct...the MSM are in the main pro Democrat and yet the only whinge we hear is about Fox TV.....

At least we will only have to tolerate Obama for four years [if he wins], then we will have the privelege of having President Palin in the White House for two terms.

Obama, Socialist, Friend of Ayers...do we need his type in the White House?

no profile pic for comment author

whinge?

no profile pic for comment author

this reminds me of the kind of people that showed up at a Michael Moore speaking engagement I went to about 5 years ago...most of them showed up because they were given a free meal at a restaurant by a local right-wing radio show...and when I asked them if there was anybody from the station itself present...there was not. Shame on these people.

no profile pic for comment author

A Hispanic in a construction uniform, a Black woman with glasses? Knowing how the Rove Playbook reads, I'd suggest following up on these 'advocates.' Wouldn't surprise me if they had some 'B' acting credits somewhere and a money trail leading back to the GOP.
When the woman started chanting, 'I'm Joe the Plumber', that just felt a little too contrived.

no profile pic for comment author

man...a lot of angry people around. What's alarming is that it has passed the stage of reason...like blind anger. These people don't even know what they're angry about. To suggest that the media has been soft with Obama is ridiculous. He's been scrutinized for everything from his name, to his church affiliation, to his education (is he to elite?)to people he's worked with, and the list goes on.

What's interesting is that, through all of this, you don't hear the Obama campaign trying to smear McCain. You don't see the Obama campaign using their resources to try to defame McCain..they spend their resources on trying to get a message of change to the people and to contrast his policies with McCain. He has never once attacked McCain's character. AND THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 2 CANDIDATES. IT IS CALLED LEADERSHIP FOLKS.

no profile pic for comment author

Whinge is British. In the States we would say "whine".

no profile pic for comment author

My jaw hit the keyboard when I watched this video. This young black woman and the construction worker who stand to benefit so much from an Obama administration shouting out nonsense about Bill Ayers and crooked media remind me of the alarming fact that people actually believe the crap that the McCain camp puts out there in order to constantly dodge answering in depth the REAL questions (the war, the economy, ending torture and unlawful detention @ GTMO, the environment etc.)

She is so concerned about Bill Ayers, why isn't she wondering about who McCain associates with. Just because they are not plotting to blow up the country doesn't mean that they are not terrorizing our country. They just do it from inside the White House, the senate and from their respective states.

And Christine,
The purpose of talking about Joe and his overdue tax bill is to show how desperate the McCain camp is to convince Americans that the tax plan that Obama is promoting will raise their taxes when it is crystal clear that it will not raise taxes for people that can't afford for their taxes to be raised. They are so desperate that they find this idiot to stand up in front of the country and say that Obama is going to raise taxes (that he doesn't pay anyway) for his non-existent company that he can't create because he isn't licenced. ITS LUDICROUS

Joe-the Plumber is a symbol that the Republicans have created so that we can feel like they somehow understand the struggles of the middle and lower class.

I am sick of this you are Joe the Plumber and Joe the plumber is you bull sh*t I am NOT Joe the Plumber, I pay my taxes and I support the candidate that REALLY has this country's interest at heart.

no profile pic for comment author

William... the words President Palin are quite possibly the scariest words I have ever heard.

no profile pic for comment author

Its clear that these individuals don't want to listen to any facts. McCain has tapped an emotional anger in them and all they seem to want is to direct that anger at someone. ITS A MOB

The motto of your website is smart and fearless journalism. That's interesting since you are very fearful of anyone who has a different ideology than yours. Mr. Corn confronts Mr. Munoz, a Colombian immigrant, who has also become a naturalized citizen of our country, at a McCain rally. Smart and fearless Mr. Corn has the balls to ask if Mr. Munoz pays his taxes! What does that have to do with Mr. Munoz's decision to vote for McCain. We are entering a very dangerous era, where a rabid and vengeful press feel that it their right to demonize people from the other side of the political fence. Another person attacked by the press for asking a simple question is Joe the plumber. We now know more about Joe than any of Obama's questionable relationships with a whole bunch of the some of the most leftist people known to mankind, including Ayers, Dorhn, Rezko, Khalid al-Mansour, Rev. Wright and Rev. Farrakhan, who has referred to Obama as the messiah, very interesting since Farrakhan is a white hating Islamist, and Obama is a Christian. Something for our smart and fearless reporters to investigate? Nah, too controversial. Might be accused of racism. Such much for objective journalism. What we see practiced by our smart and fearless journalists is something called yellow journalism. Theirs is a campaign of hate, smear and self-righteous degradation of the right.
Obama has broken campaign promises left and right like "I will accept public campaign monies if my opponent does". Well McCain did... but Obama didn't. How about some smart and fearless reporting on this issue. No way, no bad news on Obama by the MSM, only Fox shines a light on it, and is vilified by the left for racism. Keep crying wolf on this racism charge, it is already losing its power. People are beginning to tire of it. It isn't racism to question integrity!

What is most disturbing in all of this are the pathetic comments people leave. I am a socialist and will never vote for either parties of capital. Ninety-nine percent of people have no idea what socialism is or can even describe the principles behind it. Obama and McCain are both scumbags, but to use the word socialist to describe Eugene Debs and Obama turns my stomach. Also, knowing that such ignorant people read Mother Jones makes me want to cancel my subscription just to avoid being grouped with such people.

no profile pic for comment author

Ignorant! Ignorant!

no profile pic for comment author

William, you obviously don't follow politics much, my friend. If Palin loses, she will NEVER get another opportunity to be in the White House as a president. Even Biden, who is great, is only eligible for VP because he tried for the top of the ticket and didn't get to the primaries. "Loser" is a smell that just doesn't wash off. She will be guilty by association with this campaign. In actuality, she'll probably even have trouble getting ahead in Alaska after this.

no profile pic for comment author

Rob:

Corn wasn't attacking Munoz by asking if he paid his taxes. He expected Munoz to say yes. He was showing Munoz the difference between Munoz and Joe the Plumber--Why associate yourself with someone who refuses to pay his taxes.

More generally, it's interesting to watch Munoz' tactics. Spew out biased question after biased question in a loud angry voice. But as soon as someone begins to answer one of the questions, yell at them to shut up.

Y'know, if these angry people don't want the tax cut that Obama plans to give them--they can send it back to be used elsewhere.
I mean, if it's "socialism", I would think they would do that anyway, being the upstanding "real" Americans that they are.
I guess they only support McCain socialism--taxing your health benefits to give everyone checks for insurance that's too expensive anyway.

no profile pic for comment author

*cough* Joe the Plumber would receive a generous tax break under Obama. These people are truly morons.

no profile pic for comment author

What exactly is wrong with being a Muslim?

Joe The Plumber's overdue tax bill is a newsworthy item because he is being touted by the right as representing those who would suffer under Obama's tax plan. Turns out, every economist agrees that someone in Joe's situation would benefit more from Obama's tax plan than McCain's.

no profile pic for comment author

Mr. Munoz, a Colombian immigrant, who has also become a naturalized citizen of our country . . .

Maybe McCain and Palin should try running in Colombia? Maybe there are more "real Americans" there.

hey... it's a parody just waiting to happen...

Instead of 'The Village People' we get 'The Fascist People'... The Plumber, The Builder, the Black Lady with Glasses... who is going to fill the fourth slot?

Tito is too inarticulate to be the next Joe. Shouting alone isn't enough.

no profile pic for comment author

I tend to believe that one should never argue with morons, because people might not know the difference. That said, David Corn did an excellent job showing how little McCain's followers really know. They additionally seem to espouse the notion that he who yells the loudest and talks the most has the better argument. As a country we've come to a sad state of affairs.

I live in the apartments right across the street where that rally was held.
My Aunt and I were there protesting and was only permitted to stand on the side walk outside the rally.

As an African American, I have to tell you... never in my life have I heard the kind of things shouted at me while standing there with my poster.

I saw families walking by with their children, and I was amazed at the things they were saying infront of them, and the things they ALLOWED their children to say.

My son is 7 years old, and he wanted to go with me. Thank GOD I made him stay home because I can only imagine what would go through his mind. I will never EVER look at my community in the same way again.

I am beyond disgusted.

no profile pic for comment author

The media is demonizing the right? That's high comedy. I believe Bush beat them to it. Talk about demonizing someone, see how much air time Fox News devotes to tearing down Obama through innuendo, guilt by association, and other spurious tactics.

As for all the Obama-is-secret-Muslim allegations, show me some evidence from some place besides (a)a 9-11 conspiracy theorist, and (b) a guy who was denied admission to the IL bar for psychiatric reasons.

no profile pic for comment author

They reported on both but you are getting defensive about anyone pointing it out about a winger like Joe the Plummer who is not licensed, makes $40k/yr. and would get a tax break under Obama. Closed minded people are always screaming to prevent them hearing what anyone else has to say. You want to continues this disaster or stop the up coming depression? Joe the P is a distraction from the economy and this video shows peole using terms they don't even know what they mean..like "socialism". Thank god 3/4ths of the country are looking at the issues this time and not personality driven politics. If a Palin presidency isn't enough to scare the hell out of you then you are part of the 23% who think Bush is doing a great job. It's pointless to have a discussion with low information, closed minded willful ignorance because the people's mouth's move even though they haven't a clue what they are talking about. The way you can tell is they change the subject constantly trying to find something you may not know about so you can't correct them. btw...what Bill Ayers and Joe the Plummer have in common is that they are both lacking in substance and are just distractions from the economy disaster.

The McCain campaign is lacking civility and is trying to instigate the "brownshirt" tactics of '30s Germany. Rabble rousing a mob mentality into thinking the opposition is an "enemy of the nation" is shameful. McCain/Palin's divisive tactics is preparation for a new civil war turning citizen against citizen in a vicious hateful campaign. That's why he's losing. The last 8yrs have proved that we are done with these people and their sleazy methods accusing those that don't agree with them as all being un-American. Not this time...we've had enough.

One more thing -

There's no comparison between Obama's flip-flop on public financing and McCain's flip-flops. Show me three issues McCain has held the same position on for more than two years.

U.S.A= Unbelievably Stupid
Americans

You cannot rationalize, nor talks sense into people like this. After these past 8 years, of failure, it is unbelievable that these people still cannot understand that under a republican President, Bush, whom they voted for TWICE. They are doing very badly, and this country is going down the toilet.

Why does this system have a Respond button if that's not how it works? (This makes me sooo mad at the media.)

no profile pic for comment author

Joe the Plumber's overdue tax bill is important to show that his situation would actually improve under Obama's plan, especially since the McCain side is pushing Joe the Plumber. Obama's illegal foreign donations from muslims around the world? watching too much Faux News. You're drinkin the Fox/drudge/Limbaugh/Hannity/O'Reilly koolaid.

no profile pic for comment author

Maybe because Rangle isn't on television espousing how bad Obama's plan is for him. Consider the source in everything. Why should we listen to a non-taxpaying, non-license having mook who calls himself a plumber anyway? John McCain and Sarah Palin have just as many shaky relationships IF NOT MORE than Barack Obama...but you don't hear about AIP, or Keating, or Earmarks, or the Snake Doctor Pastor when it comes to them.

Misinformed anger is dangerous. "I AM JOE DEE PLUMMA"....wake up lady.
