Glenn Beck Advocates Secession

I suppose we knew it would come to this eventually. Glenn Beck is the tip of the spear for the conservative talkers and activists who are convinced that America is descending into tyranny under Obama. (I like Jon Stewart's line: that's not tyranny; that's just being in the minority.) The Fox News host is (1) often the first major media figure to adopt the crazy right-wing conspiracy theories that circulate on the web, thus pulling them into the mainstream; and (2) takes right-wing talking points the furthest, like when he suggested that Obama is turning America into a Nazi state. The tag line on his Fox News show ought to be: "First Among Nut Jobs: the Glenn Beck Program!"

So it was inevitable that Beck would be the first to suggest that if you oppose Obama enough, you have the right to secede. Here's Beck (audio at the link):

"You can't convince me that the Founding Fathers wouldn't allow you to secede. The Constitution is not a suicide pact. If [a] state says, "I don't want to go there because that's suicide," they have a right to back out! ...I sign into this union, and I can never, ever get out?? No matter what the government does, I can never get out??"

Here's my prediction -- in 12-18 months, conservatives will learn how to be out of power again and we'll see a lot less of the tea parties and Glenn Beck-type ranting. But I gotta wonder: Why didn't conservatives get this worked up when their party controlled the White House and they could actually pressure the president to do what they wanted? The activist/blogosphere left knows how to harness its grassroots energy when it actually matters. It doesn't complain about its politicians, the way conservative activists complain(ed) so bitterly about Bush. It works hard to get its politicians to do what it wants.

Update: Looks like Beck did this once before, in 2008.

Please secede. Please.

Please secede. Please. Take your red states and go. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I for one look forward to

I for one look forward to the day of living in a majority-progressive country, even if it means having a few holes in the map between New York and California.

more likely alternative?

Anon, I suspect you are more likely to live in a majority-progressive country if California secedes and you move there, as opposed to the red states seceding and leaving CA and NY as part of the union. CA knows it could probably survive just fine on its own. Every other state, not so much...

Two Quick Points

1 - Don't forget your "majority-progressive" CA just passed a law to strip civil rights from a huge chunk of the population by a majority vote.

2 - CA's biggest upside to secession would be the ability to finally run a budget deficit. It would probably be the best thing they ever did.

Progressive? What is it

Progressive? What is it you're wanting to progress to, anyway?

Oh, I got it--globalism! Is that what we're supposed to be progressing to?

Cringe at the Fringe

There will always be political fringe, Left and Right, and we don't need to get into the sociological/psychological underpinnings of these minorities here.

That said, it does happen that Rush/Fox et al provide a disproportionally loud voice, but ultimately their efforts only serve to further marginalize the Republican party as a whole:

The Left points fingers and laughs, the Indies roll their eyes, and the sane Republicans cringe.

There is a Constitutional option

Glenn Beck is free to renounce his citizenship and go to any country that would let him. Otherwise, he can champion an amendment to the Constitution.

Republicans, conservative? HA!

I'm a Constitution Party member and secession sounds pretty good right now.

I am pro-Constitution; therefore I am pro-life, pro-gun, against the war in Iraq, against illegal immigration, and for free speech.

This is NOT about left vs. right. This is about Americans vs. globalists. Which are you?

Huh?

Alexandra,
I would absolutely love to know how being pro-constitution implies (apparently uber alles), being pro-life.

Enlighten me. I'd like to think I know the constitution pretty well, and I can't imagine what provision you could possibly be referring to.

These nutjobs cheered when

These nutjobs cheered when Bush pushed through the "Patriot Act", when he illegally listened in on Americans phone conversations, when he secretly requested their bank and library records, when he declared that he didn't give a damn what the American people thought ("I don't pay attention to polls."). And *now* they are complaining about a "descent into tyranny"?

They tried this once before,

They tried this once before, I think. I remember a seventh grade teacher of mine going over it once, briefly. That whole secession thing. It, uh, didn't turn out so well. In fact, I'm pretty sure they resolved that issue fairly conclusively.

Why conservatives didn't get worked up ...

You wrote: "Why didn't conservatives get this worked up when their party controlled the White House and they could actually pressure the president to do what they wanted?"

Well, that was because "conservatives" were running up the deficit ... a "strategic deficit". On 1/28/03 noted conservative, Fred Barnes, Executive editor of the Weekly Standard, cited a senior administration official on President Bush's plans and hidden resolve.
http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/002/180mkysa.asp

#6 on his list: "An old notion from the Reagan presidency has come alive again in the Bush White House: the strategic deficit. It was associated with Reagan's budget director, David Stockman, and posits that a budget deficit is a good thing to have because it holds down spending schemes. In other words, spenders can be told, "Nope, can't pay for that. We've got the deficit, you know." The most important fan of a strategic deficit in Bushland: Bush."

Per plan, Bush followed Reagan's example in running up greater deficits than in all of U.S. history.

The use of a "strategic deficit" to kill government remains the "conservative" plan. On Glenn Beck's FoxNews program on 5/1, Beck called on someone he referred to as a judge, who had three points. One of them was that "We need to starve government into extinction."

They are now apoplectic about the failure of their "strategic deficit" plan and the need for further budget deficits to stimulate the economy. They especially hate this because much of the spending is on Democratic priorities, instead of cutting that spending to starve government.

What they ignore is why stimulus is needed. It is because of a fairly simple equation:
Gross Domestic Product = GDP = C+I+E+G

That's:
Consumer spending (C) + Investment (I) + Net Exports (E) + Government Spending (G)

C: Consumer spending has collapsed because of undermined wages.
I: Investment has collapsed due to lack of demand because of those undermined wages.
E: Net Exports = Exports - Imports ... we have an annual ~$700B deficit.
G: Government Spending is all that's left ... and that's why stimulus is needed.

The economy will go further into the ditch without government spending.

Unfortunately, compared to the annual ~$700B "trade" deficit alone, a $787 billion stimulus package doesn't look all that big. Considering also collapsed C (Consumer spending) & I (Investment), it's apparent it's not enough.

The sad thing is, that unless the U.S. maintains balanced trade, the stimulus will fail. Note that "balance" does not mean "closing off trade" or excessive "protectionism" ... since when did "protecting the U.S. economy" get to be a bad thing?

Unfortunately, Obama is not addressing this problem and therefore his economic policies will fail. "Conservatives" will use this failure to say, "We told you so." Even though they are to blame for running up both fiscal and trade deficits.

For data on the devastation, google "Jobs & 'Trade' Data Update Mar09".
