NYC Sues (More) Out-Of-State Gun Dealers. Does This Mean Bloomberg's Running for Prez?
Today, NYC sued a dozen out-of-state gun dealers that it says are recklessly selling guns that are then used in Big Apple crimes. The latest suit brings the total number of suspected straw dealers sued by NYC to 47. As the Washington Post reports: "A straw sale is where one person fills out the paperwork to purchase a gun meant for someone else. The scam is often used by those who cannot own firearms, like convicted felons."
This tactic is just the latest innovation that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been willing to employ to staunch the flow of weapons into NYC. In a Mother Jones piece that appeared last year, Greg Sargent wrote about how a law firm with its own tragic history of gun violence teamed up with Bloomberg
"to wage a landmark lawsuit against more than three dozen gun manufacturers and distributors. The companies—including Beretta, Smith & Wesson, Glock, and Browning—constitute virtually the entire firearms industry. New York City's case is built on the theory that gun companies know their products end up being trafficked to criminals and could take easy steps to stop it, but fail to do so."
New York vs. Beretta so terrified the gun lobby that it got Congress to pass (and not for the first time) sweeping liability protection for the industry, though whether it would retroactively apply to the NYC case is still up for grabs. The gun lobby has managed to defeat most other municipal cases, and has filed a motion to dismiss New York vs. Beretta "based on the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act." Nevertheless, gun-control advocates see in New York vs. Beretta model way to force manufacturers to change the way they market and distribute their products.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg—a man not to be screwed with, and also a mayor (and presidential candidate?) who relies on dems and moderates for his political power—sent out PIs wearing hidden cameras to try and make straw purchases at some 45 out-of-state dealers. The Post reports:
"They focused on shops where hundreds of guns have been traced back there from New York City killings, muggings and other crimes in recent years. Bloomberg said the majority of gun dealers refused the sale, but those who allegedly allowed it have been targeted in the [latest] lawsuits."
So there you have it. The politician taking a real stand on gun control is a Republican. Any guesses as to whether a Dem-controlled Congress will follow his lead?

Why don't you find out how manny pro gun politicians bloomberg supported.
"Not to be screwed with" especially if you are a young black or Latino man in NYC, you could end up dead on the wrong side of 50 bullets.
Not sure why you buy into this madia diversion from the real problems in NYC.

"media" diversion/spin from city hall.

Curious, Jed, what are the real problems in NYC? Obviously, police racism and brutality are among them, but are you actually saying that gun crime isn't?

I never said that. Right now, there are more pressing issues in the city and there are many ways to deal with illegal guns without diverting attention from the immediate issues confronting the city and showboating for the media, like poverty increasing and how that maybe connected to illegal handguns. There are actually an entire array of social issues right here in NYC that the mayor has failed to tackle which can probably be linked to illegal guns in some form or another. Bloomberg does't need to send private detectives out of state conducting possibly illegal and unauthorized investigations, he should be working with federal authorities like the ATF and FBI.
If you want to buy into his media spin, be my guest, but as a minority resident in NYC illegal guns are not at the top of my list of concerns right now.

which social issues has the mayor failed to tackle?
schools - huge reform effort underway
homelessness - highly lauded plan to reduce it
poverty - praise from all corners for stepping up to do something
affordable housing - largest plan anywhere
jobs - lowest unemployment in the city's history
certainly more progress in some areas than others, but come on.

Schools reform, major disaster with the dropout rate having gone up on his watch.
Homelessness has risen for the first time in 25 years under this mayor
Poverty is on the rise in NYC with NYC having the highest income disparity in the nation. Food pantries overwhelmed like never before, city employees using food stamps to survive and also visiting these overwhelmed food pantries.
Affordable housing, you must kidding. This mayor is giving the real estate giants whatever they want as evidenced by the sale of Stuyvesant town and the relaxation of residency requirements for city employees.
Employment, the job most available is cashier at an average salary of $18,000 a year, no real job growth otherwise while this guy has been mayor. Employment in places like the Bronx and other boroughs is abysmal, especially for backs and Latinos.
You are either a clueless trust fund baby or an employee of the mayor's office because you sure don't know shit about the what's happening in the city. Btw jeremy, the above is a response to your posting, I could make the list a lot longer about how Bloomberg fails to hold his to people accountable for their failures and screw ups.
Duh jeremy ???

IF the RINO mayor Bloomberg intends to run for President, I suggest he change his strategy. Gun owners have long memories, and we will NOT vote for such a fellow who has already shown a huge propensity for taking away LEGALLY owned firearms.
His so-called quest to stop illegal guns is nothing more than a smoke screen. I'd vote for Lieberman before I'd vote for Bloomberg.
