The New American Dream
A man who served as an interrogator in Iraq has penned a short but powerful article for the Washington Post describing how his actions in that role haunt his thoughts and dreams. A snippet:
Despite my best efforts, I cannot ignore the mistakes I made at the interrogation facility in Fallujah. I failed to disobey a meritless order, I failed to protect a prisoner in my custody, and I failed to uphold the standards of human decency. Instead, I intimidated, degraded and humiliated a man who could not defend himself. I compromised my values. I will never forgive myself.
American authorities continue to insist that the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib was an isolated incident in an otherwise well-run detention system. That insistence, however, stands in sharp contrast to my own experiences as an interrogator in Iraq. I watched as detainees were forced to stand naked all night, shivering in their cold cells and pleading with their captors for help. Others were subjected to long periods of isolation in pitch-black rooms. Food and sleep deprivation were common, along with a variety of physical abuse, including punching and kicking. Aggressive, and in many ways abusive, techniques were used daily in Iraq...
Heavy stuff. Worth a read.

The author made his bed, now he can sleep in it... Please don't invite the rest of humanity to cuddle you now amidst your nightmares. And you think the outing of what all with independent thinking ability knew long ago will absolve you of your sins? There is only one way out for you now. Go back to Iraq and find the people you violated and look them in the eyes and tell them how sorry you are.

Bobo, you too, and me. It's our nation and our government acts in our names. Unless you can personally travel to Iraq, find the people violated in your name, look them in the eyes and tell them how sorry you are, it remains a political question. Which is what the "outing" addresses. We must change our government. Is there any other way to do it?

I agree this man will get no succor from me, ever. He has not only shamed himself but he has brought equal shame to me and the 70% of americans who did not vote for Bush and do not support this war. He has brought shame on the Bush Family but they don't have any shame, they know no shame. George and his repub party are without shame, and they claim to be religious but in fact seem quite satanic to me, as do those Big Religions, evangelical Fundies, catholics, my religion and white southern Baptists who are tightly allied with the catholic church in their republican crusade to do...damage, destruction and death to others. What we can do about our repub gov't is get them out of power anyway we can and as soon as possible. I am sick and disgusted with carrying a burden of guilt and shame for the doings of the Bushie repubs and the 30% of americans who continue to support them and who voted for them. And they call themselves christians, which means Chr ist like. In all reality nothing they do is Christ like but rather is clearly satanic.

Sorry, people, but this unforgiving attitude is exactly what has made our Criminal-Injustice System and our Penal system what they are today.
I think many of us can identify with the dark side that arises when we are given power over other human beings--sure, I was just on my college student committee that meted out punishment for rule infractions, but even there I felt the emotional thrill that comes with going a little too far to hurt another person, and it scared the hell out of me.
This guy and many others were put into positions of power they had neither the training nor the temperament for--and their demons, not surprisingly, escaped. The prison guard mentality lies dormant in many of us without our least suspecting.
At least he has had the humanity to renounce his weakness and his deeds and show genuine remorse. How many others will never get to that point?

I have to say that 'bobo' has shown the same disregard for human frailty that our president and his eco-political disciples have shown during their reign of terror. What a ridiculous attitude to take - for a person who has committed the cruelty that this serviceman has to personally admit the inhumanity of his actions takes courage and honesty. Sitting on a self-made pedestal of moral elitism is tremendously easier - as the many factions of our culture evidence daily. In short, bobo, get over yourself and start directing that unrelenting harshness at those who still need to be jogged out of their self-deceptions. The writer of the article doesn't need your medicine.
