Giuliani Meltdown?

giuliani.jpgIf things weren't bad enough for Rudy Giuliani, he just accepted the endorsement of radical conservative Steve Forbes. In accepting the endorsement, Giuliani even touted Forbes' signature idea, the flat tax he had called a "mistake" and a "disaster" in 1996 when Forbes was running for president. Of the income tax—one of just a few progressive taxes in the United States, a country in which the rich/poor gap is greater than at any time since 1928—Giuliani said: "Maybe I'd suggest not doing it at all, but if we were going to do it, a flat tax would make a lot of sense." Wingnut alert, y'all!

Today's New York Times also reports that Giuliani was briefed on Bernard Kerik's ties to a company with ties to organized crime before he appointed Kerik as police commissioner. Giuliani would go on to support Kerik's nomination for secretary of homeland security. Giuliani claims not to remember the briefing, but hasn't denied it happened.

The charges against Kerik are significant not just because he was ascending towards the nation's top law enforcement positions, but also because he pleaded guilty last summer to letting the "connected" company, Interstate Industrial Corporation, do $165,000 worth of unpaid renovations to his apartment just before Giuliani appointed him. The problem for Giuliani gets a little stickier, too, when you factor in that the ex-mayor's private company does background checks for businesses.

giuliani and kerik were joined at the hip.
the mayor knew from day one that kerir was not an honest or capable person. yet made him police comissioner. offered him up for homeland securty head, also had him as a bussiness partner. taking $2000,000 in gifts while in office.gave the mayor pause for thought. quess mob conections are more impotant.

a winning republican ticket for 2008

Front page of the blog shows a recent comment to this post. I've tried repeatedly and on two different computers to load this page and not seen any comments. Is there a technical problem with this topic?

Ah, peter staff, I can read your comment now. Giuliani has long had suspected/known mob ties. It was the reason he never tried to advance past mayor before. But now, with all of the fame from 9/11, which does NOT include support from the fire department, I guess he has a chance.

There's another issue though. He is somewhat of an uncompromising tyrant rather than a politician.

For example, he implemented many changes to the NYC taxi industry. They were very positive changes. They just had the nasty problem that they cost money. He didn’t allow an increase in the rates to cover the costs. In fact, they went 7 years without an increase.

So, the drivers wanted to protest. They applied for the right to drive a long line of cabs slowly across the Brooklyn Bridge during rush hour. IMHO, this is peaceable assembly. Giuliani might have seen it that way too had it been for a cause with which he agreed. Since it wasn’t, he denied their application and pushed through his changes. I claim this was a violation of the drivers’ constitutional rights.

Of course, now that we don’t really have any constitutional rights anymore, perhaps we as a nation don’t care. I still do though.

Lastly, if anyone cares, the proper NYC nickname for Giuliani (not among his supporters, of course) is “El Duce”.
