Reagan, Islamophobia, and Slamming Hillary: The Republicans Debate (Also, More Reagan)
My thoughts on tonight's GOP debate at the Ronald Reagan library in Southern California:
- MSNBC.com and Politco.com, don't you dare advertise live web broadcasts again unless you make that thing work. MSNBC's video player delivered audio and video that would start and stop constantly, causing me to miss endless things and almost punch my computer. Politico's was basically the same, but with bonus out-of-focusness. Thanks, guys.
- Reagan, Reagan, Reagan. The candidates on stage couldn't stop invoking the former president. I know the event was held in a building named after him and overseen by his widow, but Jesus, it's like there was only one inspiring Republican in the last twenty five years. What, Bob Livingston doesn't cut it?
- The first half of the debate was all about foreign policy and everyone tried to out macho one another, claiming in increasingly shrill fashion that Muslim extremists want to end the American way of life. They spoke of Iran in tones that were similar to Dick Cheney's talk of Iraq six years ago. Put in the tough position of being unable to slam the president (because he's from their party) and being unable to praise the president (because he has screwed everything up and has comically low popularity), the candidates resorting to setting up Islamic extremism as a straw man and beating the crap out of it rhetorically. It was kind of scary, if you don't like the prospect of bombing/invading another country sometime soon.
- Talking about hawkish one-ups-manship: Romney said of Osama bin Laden: "He will die." McCain trumped that by saying, "I will follow him to the gates of hell." Good heavens, John.
- It has always bugged me that these guys misunderstand or understand and then deliberately misrepresent the reasons why certain factions of the Muslim world hate the United States. They don't hate our freedoms. Okay, maybe a tiny number of al Qaeda types do, but the 70 percent of the Islamic world (rough estimate) that currently tells pollsters that they can't stand the U.S. don't hate our freedoms; they hate that we have supported pro-Western dictatorships in their region, they hate that we reliably and sometimes unthinkingly support Israel, and they hate that we invaded a country that posed no threat to us and completely destroyed it. These are everyday folks, not terrorists, we're talking about. In their position, we might hate us too.
- John McCain continued the tough talk on Iraq, saying stuff like "We cannot surrender" and "Failure is not an option." And yet he also says that we've got a new strategy and a new general and we need to give them a chance to succeed. Well, what happens if six months pass and nothing gets better? Does John McCain finally advocate pulling out? Does he call that surrender? This war isn't going to get better. John McCain will eventually have to agree to what the Democrats are suggesting now: smartly and strategically redeploying the troops out of the country. Will he call that defeat? For his own sake, he better stop throwing around those words.
- Romney was asked for one thing wrong about America, and he said, completely stunned, "I love America." Then he gushed about the American people for 30 seconds. Why have we reached a point as a country where it is politically dangerous to say one damn thing we could improve about ourselves? We couldn't get health insurance for some portion of the 47 million Americans who don't have coverage, Mitt? You couldn't even say something like, "Improve inner city schools"?
- The day Roe v. Wade is overturned, according to Sam Brownback, will be a "glorious day of human liberty and freedom." According to Tancredo, it would be "the greatest day in this country's history." Really, Tom? Not the day of the Emancipation Proclamation? Or, oh I don't know, the Fourth of July?
- Why can't John McCain stop squinting?
- Ron Paul is the GOP's Mike Gravel and I love him for it.
- Towards the end, Chris Matthews asked if it was a good idea for Bill Clinton to be back in the White House again. Dumb question, clearly, because the answer for everyone (they're running for president after all) is obviously "No." But it gave each candidate a chance to rip Hillary. It was like Matthews strung her up as pinata and handed the GOP a big ol' stick. And boy, they beat the daylights out of her.
Okay, that's it. Last observation: this may be the last presidential primary debate for either party that is composed exclusively of white men. Times are changing, folks. Oh, and Reagan Reagan Reagan.

I wish all of America watched that 10 ring circus tonight, there is no way in heck that any of these turkeys will be president in 2009. All of these guys are a joke. If Chris Matthews would have asked them if they would favor going outside and digging up Ronnie's bones and running them for presdient, they would have fallen over themselves trying to be the first to say "Yes! And can I be his VP?!"
And Chris Matthews is a joke too. That Bill Clinton in the WH question was childish.

You and I were watching the same debate for sure. And that 'Gates of Hell' comment by John McCain wasn't that followed by that really creepy
forced smile? That was so freaky. And don't forget the
comment about stem cell research when Mrs. Reagan was
told how wrong she is. The condescending that went on around that question.Unbelievable!

The standard hateful eugenicist, latent homsexual fare:
*Hate Hillary
*Hate People of Color
*Grub money
*Abhore non-occidental ethnicity
*Grub power
*Hate and fear women
*Don't mention Scrubya43
*Demonstrate hyper-religious beliefs
*Hate the real Jesus
*Stay in Reagan's rancid, putrid anus for the duration of the debate
*Demonstrate the new lows in anti-Americanism GOP style
Ron Paul was the only one of the ten idiots who managed any simblence of independent thought and vision. The rest of the mutants simply parroted the party mantra verbatim, with Mitt Romney exhibiting the greatest level of hypocritical conversion among them. It's sad. All these chickenhearted Buzzards simply SUCK. I'd sooner support the write-in campaign for the Daffy Duck Presidency than vote for any of these losers.

All abortion related questions to rethugs need to be phrased as..."Why do you believe women are incapable of making their own medical decisions?" Watch them squirm!

Reagan will always be the GOP icon for two simple reasons:
1. He initiated the dismantling of international law (denying human rights).
2. He began the privatization of government (a fundamentally criminal structure).

And why shouldn't they and every other American bash poor little ol' Hillary? Should we trust someone who supported Bush's fiasco in Iraq with the future of our country? And only much later than practically every other sane American, turned around and then, decided to blame Bush for deceiving her about the fiasco? I don't think so.
Why the hell would I vote for somoeone to "lead" me who is clearly not as smart as myself and the thousands of other activists who saw through Bush's little charade from the beginning? I think I'd rather vote for Satan or John McCain, although I am not certain in which order. AT least McCain is somewhat honest about evolving from a fairly credible, if hawkish human being into a total flip-flopping jerkoff, for the sake of a few votes more.

I am not suprised to see Ron Paul ignored almost universally, both on the web and television. Look at the ads around you next time you're reading a blog, any blog. Who could blame them really? They deserve compensation for their work.
The fact is that it is in the best interest of even the web's most fringe outlets to support the political status quo. What percentage of the population has the time/money to establish this sort of thing? I do concede that I, like many, enjoy the content provided by rawstory. However, they have consistently ignored Ron Paul's many efforts to help this country, through both a consistent voting record, committee service, and overall legislative ideology.
I would invite everyone to look him up on the web-video service of your choosing. Look him up on C-SPAN, and the various sites (including lewrockwell I believe) that have his many speeches archived.
You have a responsibility to inform yourself, and while the internet is still subject to some degree of user influence, you cannot expect that the right answer will be the easiest to find.

Most of the GOP,like the Democrats are puppets of AIPAC. On to Iran.

Did you'll hear the CD (no offense to real CD's)Guiliani call for an end to the "death tax"? If you recall that's the inheritance tax that only the wealthest 1 tenth of 1% of families actually pays. The repeal will most help the Walton family, the owners of WalMart. Talk about appealing to special interests, Rudy is a master.

I remember tuning into CSPAN and listening to a speech haranguing about the immorality of both the Iraq and Afghanistan invasions and occupations thinking: this is a progressive liberal with a majority minority district in the Northeast. Who would think that the speaker was a Republican from Houston - incarceration capital of planet Earth. How did he get elected and reelected to this solid Red district? Maybe he isn't such a dark horse after all. Maybe even red staters will vote for someone with moral backbone.

It's nice to see that the commenters here recognize that Ron Paul is the best candidate on the Republican side. It's a shame the Republicans primary voters won't. I fear it will come down to Romney vs. Rudy. Rudy is probably one of the most vile humans alive, so I really, really hope it isn't him. Romney seems decent from a character point of view, the worst you can say about him is that he consults a poll every time he needs to decide what to believe.

Congressman Ron Paul is against an interventionist foreign policy. This is good. He is also NOT a pawn of AIPAC, this is good. He is a Libertarian, which cuts both ways, but he does bring a progressive voice to the debate in being against "Empire" which even the so called progressive Democratic presidential candidates(except the one from Cleveland) do not articulate because they are pawns of AIPAC.

I am glad to read that I am not the only person, that thought the First Republican Debate was a Kabukee Seance to Ronald Reagan.(Pretty Pathetic)that 10 White Men (of this caliber) with Paul being the Exception;think they could possibly be the next President of the United States of America. I consider myself an Independent Voter, so I am sure Ron Paul will get my Vote.
By the Way, the only Dem with any backbone is Hillary, the only Female in the Race.
Posted by: T.D.Henry on 05/06/07 at 8:09 AM Respond
On the Democrat side, the candidate with any backbone is Dennis Kucinich who is not a puppet of AIPAC, like Senator Clinton.

Whatever. While I do not like any of the Republicans and tend to vote more for Democrats, "Islamophobia" crosses party lines and righfully so. Why should America be tolerant to a bunch of whackos going around blowing each other up. I don't respect Islam for that reason. I never grew up with religion so I will say screw Islam and Christianity.
Posted by: Jihad is for losers!!! on 05/08/07 at 11:09 AM Respond
"Jihad is for Losers" why the expression of hate? The "whackos" are not true expressions of the religion of peace. Just because the communists have killed 140million people does not mean that Marxism is a killer religion.

Ron Paul just voted in the house(along with the Speaker) to bring the boys home now. He is a man of courage. Only 169 Democrats voted along with Congressman Paul.

The last "great" Republican was Dwight Eisenhower. Usama bin Ladin is dead and has been for sometime. Or, he's alive and living in the south of France. There are conflicting reports. If John McCain is heading for the "gates of hell", he should hurry the hell up and then shut the hell up. What a windbag.
