Hating on Muslims: GOP's Second Debate Same as the First
When the Republicans held their first debate two weeks ago, I was disturbed by the facile interpretations of Islamic terror that they presented. I wrote:
It has always bugged me that these guys misunderstand or understand and then deliberately misrepresent the reasons why certain factions of the Muslim world hate the United States. They don't hate our freedoms. Okay, maybe a tiny number of al Qaeda types do, but the 70 percent of the Islamic world (rough estimate) that currently tells pollsters that they can't stand the U.S. don't hate our freedoms; they hate that we have supported pro-Western dictatorships in their region, they hate that we reliably and sometimes unthinkingly support Israel, and they hate that we invaded a country that posed no threat to us and completely destroyed it.
The more insidious cousin of the "they hate our freedoms" explanation is the "it's in their religion" explanation. When Republicans argue vaguely that Islam orders followers to kill infidels, it amounts to saying the West is at war with Islam, and that our fights in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and in the global war on terror really are a clash of civilizations. (One might even call them a "crusade.") Worse than that, though, is that we lump all Muslims together -- in with Osama bin Laden and his henchmen, we throw millions and millions of peace-loving Muslims who might be convinced that the United States and not their violent, extremist enemies hold the keys to freedom and prosperity.
So when Tom Tancredo said yesterday that al Qaeda is trying to kill us "because it is a dictate of their religion," he needs to know he is doing far more harm than good to our interests. Fueling the sense in the Muslim world that their religion is our enemy -- and not its most wackjob adherents -- makes the prospect of peace in the region all the more dim.

Ahh. Another apologist. Tell me, should the US just close up and allow whichever tin-plated dictator a crack at governing? Because, if I go by your thinking, the US is the root of all evil in the world. Except that, if such a scenario did occur, none of us would be around to document the event. These 'Oh so misunderstood' muslims would kill every one of us. Not because of our politics or our choice of allies. Hey, we're allies with Russia, sort of, but they don't have a problem with that. Nope, just Israel. Such a tiny little nation to create such furor. If they are all so wonderfully tough, shouldn't they have wiped Israel off the map years ago? Yet, Israel is still there. Food for thought, but careful you don't choke on your disdain for anything American. Look, I'll make it easy. They hate us because we are in their way of world domination. They don't hate just us, really. We're just at the top of the list. Plus, they know they can play on the credulous simplicities of the US media and liberal robots like yourself. Meanwhile, I'm stumping for research on Mars exploration and colonization. I'm moving there as soon as I can. Its the only safe place, really.
Ron Paul clearly stated that we are hated because of our foreign policies and occupational forced over seas.

Most of the GOP candidates are in the employ of AIPAC. They pay well I hear. This is the nature of politics. Unfortunately, when it influences our foreign policy(neocon Zionists)then we have problems. Remember the Democrats and the GOP Senators both voted for the AIPAC program of reconfiguring Iraq to the appoval of Israel's Likud Party and their allies.
We need to have courage, like President Carter, and stand up to AIPAC's foreign policy and enforcers at home.

And Ron Paul was right. But as we saw with the Republican operatives in the audience, it is clearly NOT popular to tell it like it really is on THAT point.
I'd venture to say you won't hear many voices among the Democratic candidates saying "Our interventionist policies over the last several decades are what brought it all down on us."
It is not something people who have been at the height of power during that period (nearly ALL the candidates of BOTH parties) want to admit.
Ron Paul is probably the lone exception, having consistently OPPOSED all such interventions during his time in Congress.
I have never voted in a Republican primary election. In 35 years of voting, no Republican running for president has ever gotten my vote.
Ron Paul may well change all that.

GVC,
Go beyond foreign policy and take a look at Ron Paul's stances on domestic issues before you decide you are going to support him.

The Republican base scares the hell out of me. I am a registered Republican, but wonder what planet these candidates and audience members are from. We're stuck in a war that should've never been waged, and they're calling for more aggressive behavior. If your car is stuck in mud, the solution isn't to accelerate forward like a madman. It might appeal to those who dream of a Jack Bauer president -- but there's clearly a difference between the portion of the electorate that is focused on reality, and the other that imagines enemies.

Bob, being of a very libertarian mind myself, I've been following Ron Paul's career for quite some time.
I'm quite satisfied that, as president, Ron Paul would do all he possibly could to prevent government involvement in the daily lives and decisions of American citizens, as well as stopping our government's intervention into the affairs of foreign people.
What more can a Liberty lover ask?

I look forward to the day Mr. Semprini moves to Mars. The earth will be a better place for it.
