Dick Cheney: Check and Balance This!
Quick, forget everything you learned in 5th-grade social studies (or Election) about the three branches of government. You know, the executive, judicial, and legislative. Now it turns out we actually have four branches of government. Like so many of the interesting new things we've learned about how the federal government is really supposed to work, this head-scratcher comes from Dick Cheney. Rep. Henry Waxman's government oversight committee has the details:
The Oversight Committee has learned that over the objections of the National Archives, Vice President Cheney exempted his office from the presidential order that establishes government-wide procedures for safeguarding classified national security information. The Vice President asserts that his office is not an “entity within the executive branch.” [emphasis mine]
So there you have it. There's a fourth branch of government, and its name is Dick Cheney. But what should the official name be? How about the "extracurricular branch"? Add your naming suggestions in the comments.

Cheney's comment to Senator Patrick Leahy on the Senate floor was "Go F#$% yourself!" This has been his response to any attempt at oversight. Thus, his branch should be called GFY.

ThomasMc got nailed it. Cheney is the first Dick-tator. The mission statement for this branch is clear--
"Relentlessly promote
Government of the People
By the Corporations
For the Corporations."
That's not Democracy folks, it's Fascism. You can look it up in your dictionary.

In the 60's I, a foreigner, did a Civics course at the main US base in southern German, prepatory to university entrance. It was clear, concise and unambiguous and my understanding at the time, from my American friends of similar vintage was that they'd had similar courses in high school. The question thus arises, WTF happened to your country into amerika, no principle left unsullied, no ethic left unviolated and no rational public discourse possible?
I despair for your country. I loathe 'compulsory voting' in principle but, given the dismally low turnouts at Prez. elections, something is seriously wrong.

Looks like the history books in civics will have to be rewritten or disclaimed by the publishers. Also, the Cheney History will now be the starting point for American History from now on and anything written before Cheney will be made history.

The branch previously had a title, it was called the Office of Special Plans. Once they got got making an end run around the CIA and others actually tasked with coming up with intelligence on Iraq, they dropped that name. With their war in Iraq in full drive, the name has switched to Office on Iranian Affairs or some such name. Since the name changes with each new agenda, lets just call the fourth branch what it is, Halliburton, Inc.

Is any of this a surprise? As our eloquent prez once said, "fool me once, shame on -- shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again"...
Ok, ladies & gents, can you PLEASE stop the online echo chamber and gather your collective intelligence to figure out some way to enact our collective disappointment and disapproval beyond what our spineless Congress is willing to do?
Really, is any of this NEWS? We knew we were dealing with deceitful and powerhungry "folks" from square one. Honestly, is our collective response to "wait it out" until the 2008 elections, allowing Pelosi and Reed to slither their way out of their commitments to their constituents (read: setting legally-binding timelines for Iraq, halting the clearly-documented cases of Executive overreaching, etc)?
Is the strategy to wait it out, in the hopes that the constitution is strong enough to survive a potential attack on Iran and further trespasses to our civil liberties? Because if it is, call a spade a spade and go back to your day jobs, cuz as I said, none of this is news, and the echo chamber is getting REALLY OLD.
Seriously, do we have to create a general fund to hire lobbyists just so we can get our point across in a way that Congress will understand? Do we need to purchase air time on competing networks to reach out to the 41% and growing who still believe Iraq had something to do with 9-11? Do we need to hire consultants to make sure the truth will play in Peoria? Cuz frankly, this echo chamber stuff ain't working, and the special interests running the show are not (contrary to some opinions) stupid people.... just mostly amoral, with a dash (ok, a barrel) of will to power at any cost to boot.

Dick Cheney brings to my mind Phalaris, the Tyrant of Agrigentum in ancient Greece who built an Ox of Bronze which was used as a means of executing criminals. It was designed so that as the clouds of smoke rose up from the burning body they were mixed with incense to give a rosy smell while tubing was used inside the Ox's bronze belly in such a way that it muted and altered the screams into a musical harmony so that nothing would disturb the tyrant while he feasted with his guests during the executions and to ease digestion.
