What Happens in Starbucks Stays in Starbucks
Idle observation from the morning coffee run:
When did American adults start having more calories at breakfast than they do at dinner? Triple mocha caramel extra whip type drinks now seem to be the norm. And let's not forget the pastries!
I'm guessing the reason is that no one is around to see you cheat, and, since it's a cash-based economy, the only trace you've done so is a swelling waistline. Or a diabetic attack.

I love your blog, but here's a little humorless carping about a "diabetic attack."
There's no such thing as a diabetic attack. Except in the most extreme cases, diabetes is a chronic disease with no outward symptoms. Over a number of years, though, diabetes can make you go blind, destroy your kidneys, and compromise your circulation to the point that your feet have to be amputated.
It's true that scarfing down triple-mocha caramel drinks will make you fat and spike your blood-sugar levels, so the point is well taken. On the other hand, diabetes can be managed very well nowadays with a straightforward regimen of diet, exercise, and medication.
A major symptom of uncontrolled diabetes is what's called "polydipsia and polyurea," which means drinking and peeing a lot more than normal. If you find yourself in that condition, especially if you're overweight, see a doctor and get a simple blood test. Do it now so you can control the disease before it does irreversible damage to your body.

I used to live in a small town and be anti-Starbucks until I moved to San Diego and have a bunch near my office. I rely on their strong black coffee to keep me going. The fancy bar drinks there are for total weenies. I hate the people that try and have the most complicated drink ever- they are total losers but hey, Starbucks will accomodate the most ridiculous reguests. I like to keep it simple. I can be in and out much faster than all the pussies waiting around for their non-fat, half-caf, triple frappachino, half shot sugur free hazelnut, no foam, butt flavor drinks. Five bucks for a shitty sugary drink and these people call themselves coffee drinkers- it contains about an ounce of actual coffee. L-O-S-E-R-S

Um, isn't it supposed to be healthier to eat a big breakfast and a small dinner?

Ummm... Really? The MoJo Blog is more interested in idly pondering the American addiciton to sugar than to question why we support a company that rapes farmers of their dignity, and then games our bleeding hearts with false, or overstated claims of organic and fair-trade coffee?
Stop going to Starbucks.
Get coffee from a local coffee shop (if your patronage of Starbucks hasn't already driven them out of business, jerk) that actually uses fair-trade organic coffee.
According to Global Exchange, Starbucks buys over 100 million pounds of coffee each year, yet less than 1% is purchased from coffee farmers who are guaranteed a living wage, and they still see fit to plaster their stores with sanctimonious "We Use Fair Trade Coffee" posters.
Get with it people. Where you spend your money DIRECTLY AFFECTS THE LIVES OF OTHERS.
Don't have a local coffee shop near by? Buy your own coffee, make it yourself, MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Wow, "NoReally" really did their research. The problem is a coffee shop is relatively easy to start up, there are no barriers to entering the market really. With that said, how is it Starbucks is so successful? I think it's because they have become like McDonalds for coffee in the sense they are very standardized and consistent with their stores and products. You can cry all you want about free trade beans but at the end of the day, people will continue to go to Starbucks because they are consistent. I know from going to the other local coffee shops to get just plain brewed coffee, it's either not strong enough, been sitting for a long time or just doesn't taste that good. Starbucks isn't doing anything revolutionary other than just being consistent about their product. I'm glad MoJo posted something light hearted. Leave it to you to be all doom and gloom. It's coffee. Get over it. Try Starbucks first before you b*tch about it. I was the same way until I started drinking their coffee.
LASTLY, STARBUCKS GIVE THEIR EMPLOYEES GOOD HEALTH CARE BENEFITS- THAT IS WHY A LOT OF OVER QUALIFIED PEOPLE WORK THERE. THE MOM N POP SHOP IS NOT GOING TO OFFER GOOD HEALTH BENEFTIS OR ANY BENEFITS FOR THAT MATTER.
