Another Larry Craig Thought (and the Senator's Response)
I posted my somewhat conflicted thoughts on the Larry Craig (R-Idaho) saga earlier today, but I missed one thing.
I really hope that this experience, and the experiences of the other gay Republicans that have been in the news lately, will show members of the GOP that gay Americans come in different shapes, sizes, and styles. Some are the San Francisco drag queens that they seem to think will invade their schools and make out with their children (the gays of red state nightmares), and some are lonely, old, white men in suits who are driven underground for satisfaction of their sexual desires because the culture that permeates the GOP makes a free and honest expression of their sexuality impossible. Gays, believe it or not, are everyday Americans that are respectable members of red state communities. Every once in a while, they lead them.
I hope the Republican citizens of Idaho look at their senator and say, "We were satisfied with this man's work as our representative in Congress before we knew he is gay. And now that we know, nothing changes." There are "moral values" hidden somewhere in that kind of tolerance, I'm sure of it.
Update: Craig's response is to deny, deny, deny.

No, Jonny, it will result in a massive "gay hunt" to find those that look and act gay to "weed" them out of the "manly" party. This goes to the core of the party, who we are. Are we "real men", or Democrats(women, as personified by their leaders Senator Clinton and Edwards(sorry Obama, may be next time). Women and gays belong in the Democratic party and manly men in the Republican party(but not too much testosterone or they become gay).
Mr Stein, would you be so quick to defend Larry Craig if he had been caught soliciting a female prostitute for sex? Or is this just an automatic defense of an alleged gay Senator because he is apparently gay? For a U.S. Senator to solicit an anonymous sex partner in a public bathroom is just plain sick and reprehensible behavior for an elected official, either gay or straight! (none the less being completely stupid!)

ewad -
I'm glad I don't have to solicite sex in bathrooms because I have a partner, a monogomous relationship and a healthy self-esteem, but I think that calling it 'just plain sick and reprehensible' is grossly overstating the offense. After all, seeking permission for a concentual sex act is not like rape and this notion of secret, gay sex in bathrooms is only a product of a homophobic culture. If we were all free of that b/s, than Craig would have been flirting with a guy in an open and above board fashion at a night club or even, on a more wholesome note, a soda fountain pharmacy. [Aw - that's so sweet!] The thing that is sad about the situation is only that:
a. He's a closet case [his overarching life lie]
b. He was cheating on his wife or trying to [his once every couple of months lie]
c. He discriminates against other homosexuals through his politics [his professional lie]
d. The cops spend tax payer dollars trying to catch homos who are so starved for an outlet for their deepest yearnings that they would want sex in a room that smells like shit and sanitizer.
ewad - get over yourself. I bet someone could ferret out a detail of your life that they would argue was 'just plain sick and reprehensible', too.
