TSA Starts Using New 'Strip Search' X-Ray Machines

fat_man_300x211.jpg

As of today, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has begun using a new kind of x-ray to search passengers for possible weapons. The radiation-free x-ray, called a "millimeter wave," scans a person's entire body. In the process, it creates a blush-inducingly graphic image of the person being scanned. The TSA blurs the face in scans, and only allows a remote screener to see the final scan. But for some, that isn't enough: "If you want to see a naked body," ACLU director Barry Steinhardt told the Associated Press, "this is a naked body."

The millimeter wave is just one of a few kinds of advanced technology (AT) x-rays being tested by the TSA. Another kind of AT x-ray has received similar outcry (it's been called a "virtual strip search"). In response, the TSA altered the machine, but so much so that it obscured the very weapons it was supposed to find, as we reported in our July/August issue. The technology was initially developed for use in prisons and courthouses.

Despite privacy concerns, the TSA seems determined to roll out AT x-rays across the nation: they recently awarded more than $30 million in contracts to the companies that produce the machines and have used them at several airports including New York-Kennedy, Los Angeles International, and Regan National. So far, the machines have been voluntary, as an alternative to a pat-down in secondary screening. And, the TSA says, it has disabled the "save" function so that images cannot be stored or distributed. However, with the TSA's history of violating passengers' rights, I wouldn't bet on it.

Impressive!! They've managed to violate both the right to privacy and the right to freedom of religion in one fat brush stroke across the constitution.

As an atheist, having someone see me naked is not against my religion. But, for many, it actually is.

Most of us though, prefer not to strip in front of strangers, even barring religious considerations. Let's hope the ACLU wins this one.

Anyone finally realizing they need to send the ACLU some money while we still have some rights to defend? Anyone still thinking the ACLU is too liberal?

Hey, think of the opportunities for making money with a porno site sideline. Nobody needs to know, and it could reduce security costs. No point in letting the screeners have all the fun.

This aint cool at all. I first read about this on globalgrind.com and had to come see what this really is about. The government has just been stripping our rights all over. What's next?

Exactly how is any type of x-ray radiation free?X-rays are by definition extremely high frequency, short wavelength electromagnetic radiation.

Individual privacy/diginity is a small price to pay in the global war on airport boredom. I look forward to the day when we can comfortably view these real-time scans from the security of the local airport lounge.

The pictures you're showing aren't millimeter wave photos - they're of the backscatter technology you reference later. Millimeter wave is not as graphic and is used in Amsterdam and Japan without much public outcry.

Hey, at my age, if the TSA screeners want to wretch up their lunch by viewing my scarred bod, they must have stronger stomach's than most.

There is no such thing as a "radiation free" X-ray, because X-ray's are electromagnetic radiation!

The idea that it is a good idea to have molecular bond's in one's DNA unnecessarily broken just to get on the plane, is what the real problem is.

The effect of high energy electromagnetic radiation like X-rays is cumulative, and you have no idea when one molecular bond too many will be broken, and the celluar repair mechanism will not be able to fix it.

If the US government had listened to the advice given to it before 9/11 non of these measures would be required.
In effect if I want to visit the US I will have to agree to let the US government see me naked.
The land of the free is a distant memory which is very sad.

God bless America... the only country I can think of that would simultaneously obliterate my right to religious freedom, while 'defending it'.

As someone mentioned earlier, it is actually against my religion for anyone besides my doctor and husband to see me naked... Nice to know I still have the choice on how to have this right violated (patdown vs. naked x-ray). The question is how long until we're all trotting ourselves through these things.

Or better yet our young children. Now there's a pedophiles dream job. But that's another rant, for another day.

While I sympathize with those whose religion prevents their bodies from being seen, I'm with the older guy. If they want to see me naked, I'll be glad to shuck it all right there and bend over and invite them to inspect my nether hole as close as they want. And I'll eat beans first.

What a bunch of pathetic crudholes. "Looking for weapons," give me a freaking break. This is nothing but legalized humiliation from the "we don't torture" torturers. Bets that Dickless Cheney has copies sent to his office.

Well, he can have a full-color scan of my sagging boobs, complete with no tan line, and I hope it gives him a heart attack.

Beyond the abuse of dignity and freedom the potential for further abuse is tremendous. Next: See Brittany boarding American! Or you.

Solution: stop flying commercial airlines until our rights are restored. Boycott the TSA!

[The land of the free is a distant memory which is very sad.]

Washington, Adams, Jefferson and the others must be spinning in their graves, wondering why their descendants aren't starting a revolution to remove the heavy-handed bastards who are destroying the country they founded. the democrats right along with the republicans.

one begins to wonder if the wacko militia groups, who've been saying for years that the government was moving toward totalitarianism, weren't on to something.
i mean, the FISA renewal thing that made warrantless spying 'legal'? and supported by majorities from both parties? is there any opposition to this crap inside the beltway at all?

i think it's third party or bust.
