Dems Lose in Ohio and Virginia Special Congressional Elections

If you are waiting with bated breath for the results of today's special elections in Ohio and Virginia, here they are. In Ohio, Democrat Robin Weirauch lost pretty badly in a solidly conservative district. Final tally: Republican Bob Latta 57%, Weirach 43%. The only good news out of Ohio is that the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee spent $428,000 on the race, which totals nearly one-fifth of its entire cash-on-hand.

In Virginia, it was even more lopsided. Another inexperienced Democrat was unable to take a conservative district away from the Republicans. Final tally here: Republican Rob Wittman 61%, Democrat Philip Forgit 37%. Forgit, an Iraq War veteran with no political background, would have been an interesting figure in Congress, but the moderate Wittman proved too tough. Turnout was just 16 percent.

What a disappointment the Virginia loss is. There was a very good candidate, one who could make a real race out of it. And guess what, the DCCC had 10 times a much cash as the RCCC. But no, that won't work. Only in crowd candidates get money from DCCC. Virginia is trending populist if DCCC would notice, but they won't. Forgit is to moderate for me but he is so much better than the Republican. Making the Republicans work hard for this race would have been a great tactical move but there's no imagination at DNC and DCCC.

16%? 16%? 61% of 16% is less than 10% of eligible voters. Are we that discouraged? That disinterested? Where was the Democratic get-out-the-vote movement. Or perhaps, given the accomplishments of this session, Democrats said 'Why bother?'
Doesn't bode well for 2008...

What is going on with our adults, that we can't manage to take 10 minutes out of a day to stop by the polls and vote? Historically speaking these are the kinds of depressing voter-turnout numbers which immediately preceded the rise of Hitler Germany- this is not meant as a comment as to either winning candidate, but as a call for those of us who did vote and did care to go by our neighbors' homes, our friends' homes, and our co-workers' office cubicles during a voting day to offer to drive them to the polls if they can't get there themselves-
