Sarah Palin: Neocon Pawn?

The same old hawks recruit Palin to pressure Obama on Afghanistan, while ignoring their own past.

Here come the neocons again—and this time with Sarah Palin.

A group of conservative foreign policy advocates—including a bevy of neoconservatives—this week sent President Barack Obama a letter urging him to stand firm in Afghanistan and vowing their support for him (on Afghanistan) if he did so. The letter was organized by the Foreign Policy Initiative, a think tank put together by leading neoconservatives Bill Kristol and Robert Kagan, and signers included the pair and such neocon stalwarts as David Frum, Max Boot, Robert Kagan, John Podhoretz, Clifford May, Danielle Pletka, Randy Scheunemann, Dan Senor, and Gary Schmitt. But two high-profile right-wingers also added their names: Sarah Palin and Karl Rove.

The letter is reminiscent of the neocons' efforts before the Iraq War to whip up support for US military action against Saddam Hussein, an effort promoted by Kristol's think tank of the time—the Project for a New American Century. But Palin's involvement makes this recent letter more intriguing than the usual rerun. After all, some conservative intellectuals dismissed Palin when she was Senator John McCain's running mate—partly because of her apparently flimsy knowledge of foreign policy (she once referred to Afghanistan as "our neighboring country").

In a scathing op-ed at the time McCain picked her, Frum wrote:

Palin's experience in government makes Barack Obama look like George C. Marshall. She served two terms on the city council of Wasilla, Alaska, population 9,000. She served two terms as mayor. In November, 2006, she was elected governor of the state, a job she has held for a little more than 18 months. She has zero foreign policy experience, and no record on national security issues.

More recently, he slammed Palin:

Her divisiveness is not just within the country, it’s divisive within the party, and many fear, as I do, that while she’s very popular with some Republicans...she represents a future that leads the party both to political defeat and then to ineffectiveness in government.

But Frum's fellow neocons are now happy to have her as a comrade. One of the signers tells me a reason she was recruited for this letter was to "lock her in." That is, the neocons are fearful that Republican politicians may go squishy on Afghanistan or come to see it as another opportunity for an attack on Obama. (When columnist George Will recently called on Obama to "substantially" reduce US troops in Afghanistan, he provided cover to GOPers skeptical of Obama's policy and/or looking for yet one more reason to bash him.) The neocons figure that if they grab a potential 2012 GOP presidential contender and get her to commit to a hawkish position on Afghanistan, it will be easier for them to hold the line on Afghanistan within Republican circles. "It's laying down a marker," this signatory says. The question for Frum and the neocons is, do you regard Palin as a useful idiot?

Rove's signature also raises a question: Does he really believe what the letter says? It complains that the war has been "under resourced" and that this "has cost us and the Afghans dearly." It bemoans a "flawed American strategy" and "errors of previous years." But who underresourced the war, who devised a flawed strategy, who committed these errors of previous years? The Bush-Cheney administration, in which Rove served. By signing this letter, Rove appears to be acknowledging that his team screwed up. What a mea culpa.

Then there's Kristol. He seems to have had a conversion. In July 2007, he wrote a piece for The Washington Post headlined "Why Bush Will Be a Winner," praising the Bush presidency and arguing it would be recognized as a success. In making this case, he wrote, "The war in Afghanistan has gone reasonably well." How does that square with the characterization of the war—underfunded, flawed strategy, riddled with errors—contained in this letter Kristol not only signed but helped to originate? When was he spinning—then or now?

Having led the nation into the war in Iraq with phony WMD charges—before the mission was accomplished in Afghanistan—the neocons have zero credibility. It is precisely because they succeeded in pressing the Bush-Cheney administration to invade Iraq that the military effort in Afghanistan was neglected. According to a 2008 Congressional Research Service report, the Bush-Cheney administration spent $608 billion on the war in Iraq, compared to $140 billion in Afghanistan. The signatories of the letter share responsibility for the "errors" they now decry.

That doesn't stop them from charging ahead. And with Obama losing public support for his expanding war in Afghanistan and congressional Democrats raising more questions about this endeavor, there might come a day when he needs these neocons and their support for the war. But given their past record and their current disingenuousness, this group of policy wonks ought to have no standing in any foreign policy debate. Not even with Sarah Palin at their side—or in their clutches.

So what? Who in politics is NOT an neocon tool?

What about Obama?

If Sarah is a Pawn, the is Obama a Neocon Rook or Knight?

She is not Commander in Chief, Obama is.

So why are you projecting your phony twisted ad hominem on her?

She only has the power that the MSM grants her by continually airing her schtick. She is a straw man and a joke.

When was the last time the MSM focused on Kucinich and aired HIS schtick?

Why are you a Neocon journalist. I thought Mother Jones was progressive. Playing Palin is strictly Neocon propaganda and follows the Neocon playbook and script.

Obama is the problem. Not Sarah Palin.

When it comes to Bush AND Obama, who is the bigger Neocon tool?

Why do you run cover and a smokescreen for them? That is what Sarah Palin is. Look at her and bitch, but let Obama be Obama without question, scrutiny or a shred of journalistic integrity.

Is Joan Walsh your boss? Wipe the froth and foam from your mouth please. Have all the progressive sites been taken over by Neocon stooges and CIA hacks?

Say it isn't so, Corn, say it isn't so.

I agree with you that Obama

I agree with you that Obama is the Commander in Chief; NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. He is fully responsible for his actions. You are on point.

However, I think this article shows the kind of behind the scenes politicking that goes on between the two establishment parties (Democrats and Republicans). Many times most of us think these two parties are in opposition but in reality they are in cahoots on many major policies, passing the baton to each other like tag teammates. They are both working for interests that the average American cannot even phathom.

And even though elected officials are responsible for their actions, when they receive millions in campaign funds, they are almost obligated to pay it back in passing legislation that benefits the donator of those funds.

This article also gives us a glance at who Sarah Palin is and who is handling her. As a prospective voter in 2012, I want to know all I can about her so that I can make an informed decision if she should run for president. I'm looking for someone who is not neo-conservative in their thinking and is genuinely conservative in the traditional manner. If Palin is going to be groomed as the next president for Independents, Constitutionalists, Conservatives, Libertarians and angry Democrats--I want to know that she is not of the same ilk as George Bush, Billy Kristol and Carl Rove. If this were the case, I just assume keep George Bush or B. Obama. No way!

So far, from all of the articles I have read, she does not believe in a non-interventionist foreign policy and is willing to go into any country to spread Democracy at the cost of many lives. All the while we lose all of our freedoms to policies like the Patriot Act.

What I'd like to see this dishonest president do, is stand up for something and stop peddling! This man has no backbone at all and he does not tell the truth. He has not done one thing for the American people and has only done everything to benefit Wall Street, the bankers and other special interests. This Healthcare Plan is only to tax many of us and pay off most of our debt to the central bankers. Someone has to pay for the bailout and it will be us under the guise of a phony healthcare plan.

I supported Ron Paul in 2008 and the truth is that we need someone who can bring people together and simultaneously begin looking into our monetary system other than printing bogus money and increasing inflation. We need to go back to free markets, which we haven't had under Republicans or Democrats in the past decades. The next person I vote for in 2012 has to be genuine and not easily exploited by the establishment Republican Party. Fox News and MSNBC won't brainswash me into voting for their groomed puppets.

Wake up America! Do your homework.

why do neocons hate being

why do neocons hate being called neocons?

My dear anonymous,

Why? because you can't call someone an anti-semite for using the word neocon. The War Industry prefers terms that insulate them from criticism and puts almighty GOD on their side and puts the onus on a people and nation rather than the War Industry which is about as religious as a pit bull tearing up a poodle.

Anti-semitism had faded away into the realm of silly evil morons such as Lyndon Larouche and the Aryan Nations until the War Industry found it to be very profitable to stir up the mideast and sell weapons to both sides.

It isn't about religion or race, it is about killing people and making money off the deal.

Refer to the last episode of Press the Meat on NBC Sunday morning, a Neocon lovefest of Nazi Rat Bastards. Sponsored by the WAR INDUSTRY, but of course.

Read "Nineteen-eighty-four"

Read "Nineteen-eighty-four" by George Orwell and you will know why. In this science retro-future-fantasy story, everything had a shortened name. "Miniluv" (Oceana Ministry of Love = the torture patrol). "Minipax" (Oceana Ministry of Peace = the never-ending world war).
This name "neocon" is designed to mean something and nothing at the same time. For example, was Teddy Roosevelt a "Neocon"? He certainly fits the minor description provided, namely, a Republican who had no problem projecting American power overseas. How about Eisenhower, who engaged the USA in the Korean war? Reagan? He seems to fit the qualifications too. That being so, what then is an "old-o'con"? The terms is thus designed to sub divide conservatives into a group considered "traditional" (somehow more acceptable) and one 'unorthodox' and less acceptable. Its mainly rhetorical.

Question: "why do neocons

Question: "why do neocons hate being called neocons?"

Response: Why do communist nazi liberals hate being called communist nazi liberals?

The response is not the answer, but an answer is there. Look and you may find it.

"Why? because you can't call someone an anti-semite for using the word neocon."

If someone uses the word "neocons" as a drop-in replacement for "Jews" in recognizable anti-semitic propaganda, such as "the neocons control the banks", "the neocons are the cause of all our wars", "the neocons are not loyal to this country", or when someone predominantly mentions Jews as their examples of neocons, you certainly can call that person an anti-semite. Here is an example from a below comment in this same article:

"The zionists (now called neocons) have taken over both parties ... We'll all be pledging allegiance to Tel Aviv, soon"

This anonymous commenter is an anti-semite who hides his hatred behind the word "neocon". For the record, Zionism is the Jewish equal rights movement (which tells you a lot about the people who oppose Zionism) and Israel's capitol is Jerusalem.

That all said, the neocons are a real group, but the number of people who like Corn use the word "neocon" accurately seems to be dwarfed by the number using it to mean the Jews, people who don't hate the Jews, and anyone who opposes jihadist wars and imperialism.

Sarah Palin: Neocon Pawn?

It looks like the neoconstipates (Those neocons whose heads are stuck so far up their own backsides that they can't even take a dump.) are attempting another fart with Sarah Palin's blessing. These cretins have done enough damage already with their misguided efforts to control the universe. Let them crawl back under their self-imposed rocks and remain in the dark because that is all they are capable of seeing.

Anything and I mean anything

Anything and I mean anything that Sarah Palin is for, President Barack Obama should be against. The moment Obama read the letter and saw Sarah Palin's name affixed to it, he should have said, "we are leaving Afghanistan immediately.

The President should get out of Afghanistan regardless of who supports continuing the war there. The Soviets learned the hard way after 10 years. Pray we don't have to learn the same lesson.

Afghanistan war unwinnable

We should get out as soon as possible. Actually defeating the Taliban who are tolerated by the population is similar to Vietnam. These folks have been fighting since before Christ was born. The majority know nothing of peace and tranquility. It really is symptomatic of the Islamic diaspora that disdains Western culture for the ancient cultural aspects of fiefdoms and the spread of their religion through any means. At some point in the next one hundred years, Islam will have spread through and taken over most of Europe, Russia, and the Americas. With our low birth rate and continued immigration of Muslims to the West, the takeover by Islamists is a very real possibility.

Two Birds of a Feather ...

The neocons latched onto Sarah Palin because she is malleable and can easily be used as a pawn. While she may have a large following it is not large enough to make a difference. The neocons mistake is overlooking the fact that Sarah Palin is neither credible nor influential and vice-versa for Palin. (two birds of a feather ... ) Public support for the Afghanistan war was lost sometime ago.

Since Bill Kristol has been proved wrong, time and again, on every issue and policy directive, needless to say, doesn't bolster the case either. Having left the WH with his reputation in tatters Rove has at best minimal, if any, influence. How fitting for Sarah Palin to pal around with (discredited) neocon 'terrorists' -- who have no problem waging wars based on disinformation -- she is one of them.

Previously whenever public opinion turned decidedly against a war it did not change. Once you lose the public it is over. And one, ten or 100 Sarah Palins will convince the public otherwise.

When did David Corn become a sexist pig?

Boy, are you sexist! Sarah Palin has not changed her position on Afghanistan one iota, and all you can talk about how she must be a "neocon pawn" as if somebody made her do it. Why, because she's a woman, she can't have a foreign policy position? Or only because she's a Republican woman? You'd never say these things about Hillary Clinton! But just because it's Sarah Palin, she has to be too dumb to even formulate her own positions. Pathetic.

Sarah Palin is so beautiful, hot and sexy . . .

That she has caused the blood to flow from the brains of her critics to their organs of reproduction and when you are so horndogging out of your mind and want to jump someone's bones, it is hard to take their politics seriously.

But alas, since they are unlikely to score with the Sarah, they get real angry and start spreading BS about her just like a creep in High School who tells lies about the girl who will not date him or will not put out for him.

Corn is hot for Palin, just like Joan Walsh is.

And some feel the same way about Obama.

Sexist?

"But just because it's Sarah Palin, she has to be too dumb to even formulate her own positions."

I don't understand how you can conclude that this is sexism. The fact is, Sarah Palin is indeed too dumb to formulate her own positions. When she tries, she winds up with foreign policy positions based on what she can see from her back porch. David Corn (and a whole lot of other people) respect the positions of Hillary Clinton because she knows what she's talking about. It has nothing to do with sexism or party identity. I would imagine that David Corn would respect the positions taken by Kay Bailey Hutchison even if he doesn't agree with them, because she has a brain and knows what she is talking about. Sarah Palin couldn't even be coached well enough to avoid sounding like an idiot in the last campaign. Every time she says something stupid that gets reported, she blames the reporter. Rule One of being in politics is that you have to face and be responsive to the press. She just doesn't get it.

Easy Solutions.

This is so simple I can't belive it. All's this country has to do is the opposite of whatever these republicants say. I call them republicant's because obviously they can't do anything right. The last 8 years proved that.

Why isn't Rove in jail for obstruction and failing to show up in front of congress?

Umbrella Mike, it ain't that

Umbrella Mike, it ain't that simple. The zionists (now called neocons) have taken over both parties, so no matter who calls the shots, they win. Obama's cabinet is full of warmongering, lying lowlife, including the son of a garden-variety Israeli terrorist by the name of Rahm Emannuel, Ms. Boom-Boom Clinton, enablers of the organized crime syndicate known as the Federal Reserve and God knows how many other crooks. We'll all be pledging allegiance to Tel Aviv, soon. Palin, of course, thinks Jesus will save her the inconvenience, but that only shows that she can't actually READ because if she could, she would know 'the rapture' is pure fiction from the rectum of some revival-tent moron of the the 1850's. Nothing personal, but America needs to figure out who the REAL problem-children are before we can escape our pre-planned fate.

All I can say is, thank goodness, for such a level-headed, immensely intelligent President of the United States, Barack Obama. What is wrong with all of these Republicans? Maybe, in one of her hissy fits, she could push the nuke button. Oooops.
