During a little-noticed speech at the University of Chicago on Tuesday, John Bolton suggested a way to resolve the controversy over Iran's nuclear program: Israel should launch a nuclear attack on Iran. Speaking to the University Republicans and the Chicago Friends of Israel, Bolton, George W. Bush's hawkish ambassador to the United Nations, said, "Unless Israel is prepared to use nuclear weapons against Iran’s program, Iran will have nuclear weapons in the very near future." Bolton has repeatedly declared that Iran's nuclear program is unacceptable. Given that he holds this position, his contention that the only way to prevent a nuclear Iran is with a nuclear attack appears to be a backdoor endorsement of just such a strike.
Daniel Luban—a blogger for The Faster Times and a graduate student at the University of Chicago—first reported Bolton's remarks. Iranian officials are scheduled to meet with diplomats from the United States, France, Russia, and the United Nations on Monday to resume talks about Iran's nuclear program. Why would Bolton pump up the rhetoric now? Perhaps his aim is to undercut the negotiations. "He has escalated his rhetoric in the midst of diplomacy for the purpose of undermining diplomacy," Parsi maintains. "Bolton recognizes that diplomacy is not going to lead to an elimination of the Iranian program, it would lead to compromise, and Bolton isn't interested in compromise."
Bolton has resorted to cavalier talk about nuclear attacks before. At the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington last February, Bolton joked that President Barack Obama might better understand foreign policy if his hometown of Chicago was destroyed by a nuclear bomb.
Parsi says that Bolton ought to ponder the aftermath of an Israeli nuclear assault on Iran. "There is a day after you use a nuclear weapon," he says. "If you want to maximize collateral damage and really make sure that the Iranian-Israeli conflict will be another unending Middle-Eastern conflict, then nuclear weapons is your path and John Bolton is your guy."

While other's seem to enjoy the thought of New York, for one, being nuked by friends of Iran handed Nuclear Bombs, I find it rather dismaying.
Face it, we are comparing Oranges to Apples when trying to explain Muslim traits and Christian traits. We are both just fine, in most regards. However, be it noted that the chap who is going to carry a nuke bomb into London or New York is dead-bang certain he, or she now, will get 70 some-odd Virgins for the (un)heroic deed.
This attitude is not prevalent in "the other" planetary faith. The Iranians may have their agendas vis-a-vis Muslimising all the earth. That's OK too. Have their ideas. We have ours too.

I believe if the US Congress acknowledged that fact, they would have to cut off the flow of foreign aid they give to Israel. A few important points not
A few important points not mentioned in the article or by other posters. 1) Israel has more sophisticated tactical nukes then the USA and they have already used them in other venues. These are not designed to kill people, which is probably why the general public has not heard about them before. They are designed to better the best "bunker-busters" now in circulation. This is possibly what Bolton was referring to, although I could not understand what he was saying from the sound track. 2) Iran poses a major threat to Israel but it poses a (less major though significant) threat to its brother Muslim nations and the rest of the world. Which is the only reason why the rest of the world has lifted a pinky-finger to try to stop their acquisition of nuclear weapons. This is also why the Iranians have consistently misrepresented their intentions in building such weaponry. 3) The Iranian regime is singular in one respect. Whereas the Saudi royal family (for example) uses the Qur'an as their constitution, this does not mean they entirely believe it. It is well known that the more affluent Arabic potentates consume alcohol, visit single women and engage in other, religiously prohibited behavior. However, the Iranian government is the only Shiite government in the Mid East. Additionally, the particular sect which the Iranian religious authority belongs to can be fairly characterized as a "doomsday sect". These are the only Muslims in the world, in any position of regional power who believe that it is their RELIGIOUS OBLIGATION to promote, cultivate and insure the onset of "Judgment Day" [read: WW3]. So dangerous are these people that the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, had officially outlawed these teachings as "apostate" to Islam. 4) Perhaps Israel is not a signatory to the NPT treaty because its facilities house weapons which are technologically BETTER then conventional nukes.

Only a couple of days ago, the USA signed an agreement to provide Pakistan with $7.5-billion in new aid, over and above the $1-bbln/year they already receive. http://www.voanews.com/english/2009-10-16-voa21.cfm Even this sum is dwarfed by the resources the US pours into Afghanistan and Iraq. The above is one of the worst reasoned comments I have read in a while. The Jerusalem Post has been a world respected authority on mid-east affairs since 1932 and (I think) before. So much so that the Arabs in the region often rely on the J.P. for the real news--when their local newspapers fail them. And to repeat, I don't think anyone is suggesting an Israeli first-strike on Iranian civilian populations, which is the core libel in the above comment.
If Israel did not exist, the Jew-haters (including those in the Arab world) would have to create it, as a reliable target for their endless blame and as an Orwellian ploy to detract attention from their own shortcomings. Is this guy still part of The Government? I sure hope not. I think if Israel and Iran are ever going to resolve their differences, it'll be business suits and briefcases, not bombs and bombers. Could This Be The Real Reason?
Just suppose Iran isn't really interested in weapons - they are sitting on a lot of oil, after all. I think what really makes some people nervous is that by using nuclear power to supply most of their civilian needs, a greater percentage of their petroleum is free for export. As supplies around the world start to dry up, that extra oil becomes a powerful bargaining chip, one that other countries that have been sucking the Middle East dry for generations are really afraid of.
