Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced on Twitter Friday that the infamous drug kingpin and expert tunneler Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán had been captured.
Misión cumplida: lo tenemos. Quiero informar a los mexicanos que Joaquín Guzmán Loera ha sido detenido.— Enrique Peña Nieto (@EPN) January 8, 2016
"Mission accomplished: we have him," Nieto tweeted. "I want to inform Mexicans that Joaquín Guzmán Loera has been detained."
Guzmán was arrested a week before "Chapo: El Escape del Siglo," a film detailing his historic escape, was set to premiere in up to 300 Mexican theaters.
El Chapo's most recent escape from a Mexican jail made international headlines last summer because of the incredibly sophisticated and intricate tunnels he used to break free.
