Time Caught in Act of Dumbing Down the News for US Readers
Blogger Paul Schmelzer has been busy raising questions about some of the nation's widely read periodicals when it comes to the selection of their cover stories—namely the difference between Time's April 2 U.S. and International editions. While the international cover features a story about Pakistani religious extremists filtering across the border of Afghanistan "with the intention of imposing their strict interpretation of Islam on a population unable to fight back," the US edition of the publication features the story, "The Case for Teaching the Bible." Schmelzer wonders why Time isn't giving the U.S. the same edition that the rest of the world is seeing on newsstands. The choice can't only be about marketing and keeping newsstand sales up in the U.S. Something's a little fishy here.
This isn't the first time that a major US news weekly has pulled this trick of presenting the news differently to US readers than it does to the rest of the world. Last September, Newsweek gave international readers a cover story about the Taliban and US readers a cover featuring photographer Annie Leibovitz, in essence replacing with a hard-hitting news story of international importance with a much lighter celebrity piece. In the case of both the Time and the Newsweek cover story cover-ups, the stories were related to coverage of the Taliban. Is marketing getting in the way of the serious news in the U.S.? Or is the media afraid to tell Americans what they don't want to hear? Only Time can tell.

EVER SEEN CNN INTERNATIONAL? IT IS NOT LIKE CNN USA.
Thanks for this! I never read Time since my parents passed away, so can you tell us if the inside of the issue was the same, or different? Must be different - did the Taliban story even appear in the Liebowitz issue?
Thanks again,

Time's American cover is significantly dumber than it's international one.
MoJo would look significantly less dumb if they would learn how to spell the possessive form of "it." The apostrophe is only used in the contraction for "it is."

Simple economics, my friends. More people in the United States would prefer US Weekly to TIME. Hence, dumb-downed covers which better serve to part the idiots from their money.
Seriously - when is the last time you actually bought a printed news magazine? The stories in these things are, at best, at least a week old.
There will always be a disproportionate amount of intellectuals versus asses in the masses in the United States. That is, unless someone grows a pair and not only LEGISLATES educational requirements but also ENFORCES said legislation. Wrap your head around that one.
Parental responsibility. Or PUNISHMENT!
The accountability of citizens with regard to children's education. Or PUNISHMENT!
Think about it. Punishment doesn't have to be jail time. Clean the highway. Scrub the crap-tastic graffiti and tagging from our buildings, fences, rocks, etc.
It will be a beautiful, intelligent world when I'm in charge! A little fascism is a small price to pay, my friend.

Ah, yes. It's always the fault of its readers, isn't it? Never the general culture of 'buy more stuff' which pervades our society under the guise of freedom. We don't need fascism to instill discipline; Nature will take care of it. The bacteria in the Petri dish don't slow down until the dish is full and the middle is already dead.
It gives a whole new meaning to the name "Consumer Reports" now, doesn't it?

You know, they 'test' the covers each week in front of afocus group, to see which would be more appealing to pick up, read, or buy. It just shows the average public doesn't care anymore-- they're not doing it for free!

Since "Time" has been a treasonous moronic mouthpiece for neocon policy, and because only ignorant treasonous morons are willing to believe the crap that "Time" has been spewing, of course the 70% of USA citizens who know better refuse to give "Time" the time of day.
"Time" is the USA "Pravda", and it's blatant embrace of a hostile foreign nation's agenda is going to blowback.
Time for "Time" to go away.

time is dumb everywhere .... written by sophomore ivy league frat boys i think... reading it in asia, you just feel sad how "we" present our narrow and banal world view to the bright minds here .... another example, asian wall street journal vs. financial times... just is no comparison... i feel sad for usa, but it will deserve all that will happen to it in the not so distant future...

I guess I must be glad I don't live in the US. By the way, Beatnik Beatty why do you get so mad about such an irrelevant mistake? Shouldn´t you get mad at the shameless manipulation the American media perpetrates on your nation? Shouldn't you become indignant at the crimes the US administration is carrying out every single day murdering scores of innocents in "enemy" lands? You should wonder why the enlightened American people do not see what the rest of the world so clearly perceives. The soma (George Orwell dixit) you so voraciously digest must have something to do with the way you people reject reality. Yes, Big Brother is well and getting better in the land of the free.

Isn't it rather the media/government controlling what they want Americans to hear?

Just what is the point of your long and incomprehensible post? And to the editor of MJ, why do you post this inane drivel?
Posted by: Jeff Latten on 01/02/08 at 11:45 AM Respond
Poor Jeff Latten.
1) 2 paragraphs hardly can be considered "long." I guess it is long for someone with, like, the reading comprehension of a 5 year-old. Hooked on Phonics, homie--it might help you.
2) The point? I think the title in this case suffices as a thesis.
