New Snickers Ad Encourages Drive-By Shootings of Unmanly Men
Via Towleroad comes a new spot for Snickers which appears to endorse violence against the effeminate, or at least against speed-walkers. In the spot, a yellow-shorts-sporting butt-shaking speed-walker is attacked by former A-Team star Mr. T (?!) with a Snickers-shooting machine Gatling gun, for being "a disgrace to the man race." Ga-wha? The ad was created by AMV BBDO, a subsidiary of the retro-futuristically named Omnicom, which turns out to be the company also responsible for a Dodge spot and another Snickers ad that inspired claims of homophobia. Ad Age critic Bob Garfield has written an open letter to Omnicom calling the spots "simply sick."
I've been a vocal proponent of everybody chilling out over fictional portrayals of LGBT people and the gender non-conformist, but this is appalling, and also completely unfunny: making fun of racewalkers is so, like, 1993. Watch the offending ad after the jump. What do you think, Riffers, does it make you feel like "getting some nuts" and having a Snickers?

Well, let's be honest. The ONLY way the average Snickers eater is going to do ANYTHING to ANYONE is from the front seat of their car, or the couch... so effiminate joggers, watch out for cars that lean to the right (from head-on) or couches on wheels!
I thought it was pretty funny. The ad is obviously ridiculous, so it doesn't seriously support the purported values of "the man race" that it presents. The term "man race" is ridiculous enough that I think the ad's seriousness is clear.

Thanks for the racewalking link. Naturally, I see this as extreme disrespect to one of the original modern Olympic sports. I double dog dare Mr. T to walk a full 26.2 mile marathon with me.
Even crueler, I've actually recommended Snickers as a replacement for costly "energy bars." The pain, the pain.

It's just an advert. The man was shooting chocolate bars. I'd be glad if someone shot Snickers at me in a drive-by manner... because Snickers are awesome.

New Snickers Ad Encourages Drive-By Shootings of Unmanly Men??
REALLY??
The only thing it encouraged me to do was laugh.
Pickup trucks flying through the air, smashing through houses and a rider in the bed not being thrown out?
Ridiculous!
A candy bar shooting gattling gun?
Ridiculous!
(Sorry Ben, the thing is not a machine gun by definition. The design has been around since the unCivil War.)
Mr. T? The man is an obvious and intentional caricature of himself!
Speed-walkers? I used to compete in 5k, 10k, half-marathon and marathon length road races locally, and there were two world-class speed-walkers who'd show up on a regular basis. One guy had been on Great Britain's Olympic team in the '80s. They knew their sport struck people as silly looking. We'd laugh at them, and they'd laugh with us. Then late in some races, as they passed some of us the order of laughter would be reversed, but still mutual.
I think some people are just a bit too eager to take offense.
Give the hyperbole a rest, if you expect to be taken seriously.

To anyone who feels this ad encourages violence toward gays, I say:
I Pity You, Fool.

Haha, this ad was hilarious. GET SOME NUTS! This doesn't encourage drive by shootings unless your a very poorly educated piece of white trash, in which there is no hope for you anyway. Stop bending the rules for stupid people. Otherwise you take the fun and happiness our of life for the rest of us.
