Avondale Industries Inc. was acquired by Northrup Grumman Corporation in 2001. Founded in 1938, Avondale first began building ocean-going ships in the 1950’s. From 1959 to 1985, the Company operated as a subsidiary of Ogden Corporation. Over the past two decades, a majority of Avondale’s contracts were for the construction of US Navy surface ships, although it also built container ships and crude oil tankers.
