Study: 98 Percent of "Eco-Friendly" Products Make Misleading Claims
A study of 4,000 "eco-friendly" consumer products found on supermarket shelves found that 98 percent of them make false or misleading claims. The study, presented to Congress earlier this month by the environmental consulting firm TerraChoice, found rampant greenwashing in every product category. Twenty-two percent of the products it evaluated featured an environmental badge, or "green label," that was actually meaningless.
Congress is now debating better ways clamp down on greenwashing. The Federal Trade Comission, which is supposed to prevent the practice, has taken almost no enforcement action against greenwashers over the past decade. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) is contemplating introducing a bill that would boost federal oversight of eco-marketing, including product lablels. While one third of conumers rely on labels to decide if a product is environmentally friendly, there is a confusing jumble of 300 competing environmental certification programs that bombards them with competing and misleading claims.

It's not a "lack of corporate integrity that has invaded our land" (whatever the hell that means) but a total lack of personal responsibility and accountability. But hey, why do it yourself when you can just have someone else do it for you, right?!
How shortsighted you are
I research like crazy, but you know, there are more things that need researching than there is time to do it. One still has to create an income and maintain all the mundane details of life. Frequently, large companies do spin control, twisting truth to meet their financial/power agenda, duping consumers. Why you think it's acceptable for companies to market products with lies on their labels or within their marketing boggles my mind.
Sure, I don't love the idea that we have to pay for oversight. It would be nice if we could count on everyone to be honest. It would be even nicer if everyone cared enough to not produce toxic products in the first place. But since there are many motivated by greed and not with integrity, we gotta do what we gotta do to be safe.

A good middle road would be to let crapitol swill sit on their petulant backsides until someone like you point it out to them, assuming they would then come down very hard on the company with a 3 strike rule: warning, fine, and ordered recall!

I had hoped that we would be further along the greening movement in America than this. Greenwashing is usually an early step by corporations when a movement has taken off sufficiently to make it profitable to promote the party line, but where the corporate culture change is still at an early stage.
I.E. It is profitable to "look" green, but it is not conisdered profitable to retool to "make" green products themselves.
Because to most of us who do not have the time or resources that Terrachoice has put into analyzing the claims, Looking green and Being green are hrd to distinguish, and hence, sadly and despite the cries of libertarians, regulation from governments sufficiently powerful to enforce them are required if our society wants to have the green label truly mean something.

Gotta do some research..
Unfortunately, you have to use your head and do some research before purchasing some of the so-called green products. If WalMart has something in attractive packaging that makes claims that it's a green or sustainable product I'd tend to not believe it. The same goes for 'organic' food at big box chains stores. I buy my organic food at the farm down the street. I research products online before I buy them so I know what I'm purchasing.
It's a shame that so many stores are jumping on the 'greenwashing' bandwagon just to try to sell more made in china junk. It gives the whole green movement a bad name and will ultimately turn off consumers.

I have seen the same thing on numerous occasions. Many companies are just out to make a dollar on what ever type of pitch they can. the deception aggravates me. There are always those people who just dont care but then again there are also people who do. There are good companies out there that actually do what they claim to do one that i found is called grabgreen at http://www.grabgreenhome.com they make laundry detergent that is naturally derived and eco friendly. bottom line though they arent these big companies that are out there talking about things that are sooooo great but they really weren't. its just agravating!!!
