Video: 20,000 Detergent Bottles Under the Sea

—Photo of marine debris courtesy of Tay Wiles. Front page photo courtesy of Project Kaisei.

After a month spent studying the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch," a vortex of waste twice the size of Texas in the North Pacific Ocean where there's a 36-to-1 ratio of plastic to plankton, the scientists behind Project Kaisei offered tours of their vessel and talked with Mother Jones' Sam Baldwin, Andy Kroll, and Taylor Wiles about finding lawn chairs and laundry baskets floating a thousand miles at sea. Environmental experts also weighed in on how all that junk got out in the Pacific, its impact on marine life, and why "benign by design" is a phrase to know. Watch the video below.

Garbage

That's just disgusting.

The universe is at least

The universe is at least 15-billion years of age. Our planet is at least a few billion years old. Human monkeys have been in charge for about 50,000 years. In the last 100 years, we have turned this planet into a toilet.

Question is...

what to do about it? It's one thing to point at a giant dog turd and remark about the odor and appearance, another thing entirely to lay hands on the pooper scooper and get rid of the problem.

In order to clean up the Giant Floating Garbage Patch, they're going to have to do some stubby-pencil design work, and come up with something, kind of like a barge, but with some sort of moving leading edge that's even with the waterline, capable of essentially ingesting what it finds floating around out there, then they're going to need a way to power it, and man it(probably robots), and then figure out where to take the plastic garbage thus accumulated. Otherwise, the ocean will eventually just fill up with AIDS needles, discarded lawn furniture, children's toys, tampon applicators, and whatever else is rolling around out there.

Eventually, we'll get smart enough to take all that plastic trash, and turn it into oil so we can make new plastics or fuel out of it or something. Maybe around 2321...Klaatu marachas necktie

We'll never get rid of it

We'll never get rid of it unless we stop making plastics.

My first thought was "clean it up" but then I realized even at recycling centers, the plastic that is recycled is broken down into "nurdles" and those nurdles get onto the floor and out the door and back into the water system. I've seen recycling trucks lose water bottles out of their trucks many times before. Unknowingly lost down the drain. The only solution is to stop producing plastic at the rate we're producing it and find an alternative. Glass? Aluminum?

Manufacturers would save money if they used less packaging, some of them are realizing this.

There is a dvd called "Our synthetic sea" that remarks that the "North Pacific Gyre" is as large as the north american continent. We're very close to the point of no return, WE NEED TO CLEAN IT UP!

Garbage dump

This topic is extremely sad.
Is anyone studying how to begin cleaning it up??

sea junk

there is very little life in the open sea. i bet there is more life under the junk than there is net to it. things that have been in the sea long have life on it. look under it and see. i think its somewhere that small life can live. a larger life can feed. old shipwrecks have life when there is no life away from them.

wha...?

so are you saying that the garbage floating out there is promoting life underneath it, ya dumbsh*t? Or why did you post such a stupid comment?

no profile pic for comment author

cleaning it up is one thing,

cleaning it up is one thing, but perhaps more important is to stop making the crap in the first place. we need to look at sustainable alternatives to plastic, products which can be truly recycled and not downcycled like plastic, and then ban plastic like CFCs were banned.

Eco-makeover Challenge

We are currently casting families, homes and businesses in the tri-state area for the third season of WA$TED!, an eco-makover show on Planet Green. We are looking for candidates that want to go green but haven't made the leap - or maybe you want to go green but need help convincing your family members or co-workers!

The eco-makeover involves lifestyle tips, cool gadgets and products, superficial changes to the home/office and behavioral changes for your household/business. The goal is to reduce your carbon footprint and help you save money. And there is a cash prize for families/businesses that successfully “green up” their act.

We are looking for candidates in the tri-state area. If you are interested please contact us ASAP!

Thank you,

Hyperbole

That was a great video about a disturbing problem. I just wish that the video had retained its credibility throughout: it ended with a line "it may be that in our lifetimes we see that there are no more fish species in the ocean." Come on! That is exactly the sort of ridiculous hyperbole that opponents of sensible environmental policies point to when discrediting the movement. Please be more careful about what you say and publish, MoJo and environmentalists!

This is news to people?

The specifics of the gyre is perhaps news, but we've known for years that dumping trash, esp. plastics, into the oceans was suffocating the life in those oceans. Yet all I hear is sloganeering: benign by design". Nonsense.

In the summer of 1989, I took a ferry from the Southern tip of NJ across the Delaware Bay to Delaware St. Beautiful trip, but ruined by the abundance of floating trash, mostly floating plastic. That was nearly twenty years ago and I've not forgotten that trip and all the trash I saw...trash just from the Delaware River.

I recycle all my plastic containers, but have no idea where they go after I leave them at the recycling station. I don't even ask for a return on the deposit for those containers I paid a deposit on. But then there's the plastic garbage bags and plastic grocery bags. In VA, I could take the plastic grocery bags to any supermarket for recycling...of course, I have no idea what happened to them, but I did my part. Here in the great state of NY, I have no place to recycle my plastic grocery bags. I suppose I can burn them or request paper bags. Yes, there is more that I can do, but I'd be acting alone for the most part.

Frankly, I blame the conservative movement. They've successfully prevented any social, environmental, or healthcare reform progress for 30 years and now they've done so even as the minority party. They resist any change; they [say they] still think America is the greatest country in the world as we destroy the world's climate, our automobile industries fail because they refused to adapt to newer technologies that would have saved them and us, our healthcare ranks among the lowest of any industrialized country. Thomas Jefferson said that "people get the government they deserve". If that is true, then Americans get the government they deserve. And if that is true, Americans will get the climate they deserve, the environment they deserve, the healthcare the deserve, and the joblessness and poverty they deserve. None of the above problems can be solved w/o a major commitment by the American people and they are pathologically incapable of doing the right thing. Obama will not be able to reform healthcare, and because of that will likely lose the next election. We will return to a government run by extremist-conservatives who resist all essential reforms. And having "Too Many Fish in the Sea" [Marvelettes?] will not be a problem.

From "The Graduate":

Mr. McGuire: I want to say one word to you. Just one word.
Benjamin: Yes, sir.
Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?
Benjamin: Yes, I am.
Mr. McGuire: Plastics.
Benjamin: Just how do you mean that, sir?

Where do the plastics go

Don't get me started! I used to run a recycling facility, landfill and incinerator. Those deposits you made for the plastic containers, the bottlers keep them. Deposits are hugely profitable for the distributors of Coke and Bud, but for things like the Pacific Gyre, not so significant. Recycling plastic bags is a scam. I regularly got offers to pay me if I could take bales of plastic bags from some other locality and "make them go away quietly" - wink and nod. There would have been good money in it. Someone got paid, of that we all can be sure. The game is to convince the public that those plastic bags are ok, that they are getting recycled, and that the manufacturers and stores can keep doing what they are doing.

Recycling only works when there is a market. Markets work when there is demand. There is no market for slimy, partially degraded, mixed plastic scattered throughout a large portion of the Pacific Ocean. A plan for screening plastic junk out of the ocean expecting to find a market for the stuff is an invitation for scammers. And scamming the public is both big business and business as usual.

So, what is to be done. Make waste the manufacturer's responsibility. Our technical and business capacity is up to the task, but only if the incentives are right.

scientists who work for politicians ,get paid by these politicians and they have downplayed the facts because solutions are expensive and means change and change effects many peoples incomes, and upsets profit margins,so most of the world is kept in the dark of the real things that are going on.for political and economic reasons.

The one unequivical fix

We, here in America, have this very prepubescent outlook on the world. As put to me by a friend in Germany, " America is still a baby country, you have very little history from which to draw conclusions, and, like a child, you have disdain for the idea of accepting advice."
In Europe, they are already facing, and having to deal with problems just surfacing here, because they have many thousands of years of concentratred pollution to deal with.
There really does exist a relatively simple fix to our nations problems, which would also put us in a position to more effectively contribute to the solution of pressing global challenges as well.
There is always much lamentation regarding taxes, and the bitter pill we must be willing to swallow is that it is only through taxes that our government is able to do things. The REAL problem is that Americans have slowly been convinced to accept lower and lower wages. If we were all paid more appropriate wages, than we would be more able to afford increased taxes, and subsequently, the governement would be more able to effectively address the growing concerns of our modern age. This has also been a wonderfully easy situation for the Republicans to exploit. As businesses continue to keep wages low, Republicans can then gain an impressive following among the working ignorant just by claiming that reducing taxes will mean more money in average Joe's pocket.
I know what you're thinking, and yes a broader tax base would mean more funds to fuel the corrupt, but a return to decency and honor is equally way over due. We must begin to consider our actions based on what is best for all of us regardless of profit margins.
Bottom line: Corporations, and the ultra-wealthy need to recognize that saving the planet means the continued existence of their consumer base.

Great pacific garbage patch video........

it seems as though much of what we consume to day is here to stay. more particularly plastic products. How long could we expect to go on like this before it coming back to haunt us? not long, that is for sure.
