An Indicted (GOP) Senator, a Disgraced (GOP-run) Justice Department, a Gagged (GOP-managed) EPA--Just Another Day in D.C.

Corruption-o-rama in Washington on Tuesday:

On the front page is news (or confirmation) that Aberto Gonzales' Justice Department was run by partisan hacks who illegally denied jobs to applicants who were not Republicans and Christian conservatives.

The Associated Press is reporting that the "Environmental Protection Agency is telling its pollution enforcement officials not to talk with congressional investigators, reporters and even the agency's own inspector general, according to an internal e-mail." AP adds: "The EPA is currently under pressure from several congressional committees to disclose documents relating to its position on global warming and its denial of a petition by California to control greenhouse gases from motor vehicles. Last week, EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson denied a request to appear before two Senate committees to discuss whether the agency's decisions comply with its staff's technical and legal recommendations."

And Senator Ted Stevens, an Alaska Republican, was indicted for making false statements on his financial disclosure forms to conceal $250,000 in goods and services he received from an oil company that sought official assistance from Stevens. The 84-year-old Stevens used to chair the powerful Senate appropriations committee.

Cronyism that undermines good government, a gag order that attempts to block the flow of information needed for oversight, and a case of (alleged) personal corruption in which a legislator exploited his office to line his own pocket--it's as if the seven-and-half years of the Bush presidency was boiled down into one news cycle. The only thing missing is a war sold on false pretenses.

Hallelujah!!

It's about time Stevens took this hit.
Maybe they can make him cross the bridge to nowhere, on foot...
Kind of a modern "walking the plank" sort of thing.

But it's the corrupt inJustice Department that's gone after him, no??
Are they the good guys now?

You know, if we can turn out Senators for making false statements, we can empty the other 99 seats by the end of the week.

Cronyism in the justice department is a disaster. I thought that this was the one area where Bush and the right wing could not poison.

Ya, well so what! Nothing ever gets solved - we have a very corrupt 2 party system. The Dems are just as bad as the Republicans. They bark a lot but they don't bite. You can't tell me that have no way of forcing the issue - they don't because they are part of the problem. They are all liars and crooks.

After 7 1/2 years, I have no sense of outrage left. Next week something else will surface that will knock these stories off the front page. The level of corruption and self-serving behavior has no limits. I'm beat. And this is how they win. Who would have thought that simple truth and honesty would require so much effort. Help!!!

Regarding the GOP's false claims:

Congressman Dennis Kucinich said in relation to the claims used by the Bush Administration to justify the invasion of Iraq:

... last Friday was a day of singular importance in Washington. The House Judiciary Committee met to discuss the Bush Administration's abuse of executive power and for the first time the case for Impeachment was discussed in front of a Congressional committee, in depth, at length and with authority.

Twenty members of the Judiciary Committee attended the six hour hearing, during which twelve witnesses, including myself and four members of Congress testified. In this hearing I called for the Impeachment of the President for misrepresenting a case for war.

This week I will present members of Congress with Impeachment petitions submitted by those of you who have signed the on-line impeachment form.

I need your help. In the next few days we must redouble our efforts to get more signatures on the online petition at [Link]. I'm asking each of you to please contact at least ten of your friends to go to www.Kucinich.us now and sign the Impeachment petition that will be delivered by me. Wednesday night is the deadline.

Please send out an email to all your friends and family, post this link, http://kucinich.us to your blogs and make this effort count as this is the only petition that I will deliver.

Thank you so very much. Dennis Cleveland | OH | 44111 | 216-252-9000

In 1994, Republicans took control of Congress by claiming that after 40 years in power, Democrats had become corrupted. Interestingly, Republicans did it faster.
