Merry Christmas From the U.S. Military
If you are a soldier in Iraq, is it alright to wish people a merry Christmas, or would "happy holidays" be better? Like, whatever dude. As Ann Coulter says on a poster hanging on the door of the military police office in Fort Riley, Kansas: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity." It's Jesus time!
That, at least, appears to be the way the military is heading according to a bevy of findings released by the of Military Religious Freedom Foundation this week, just in time for the holidays. MRFF founder Mikey Weinstein (see our recent profile) believes the military has been colonized at all levels by evangelical Christians bent on converting it into an army of God. The group's recent findings certainly support the idea:
At Fort Riley, the post exchange store, run by the base, sells the Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam, which photos show on display right next to The Soldiers Bible.
The Malmstrom Air Force Base, in Montana, houses a store called "Enabled By Christ: A Store for the Christian Man."
A segment of a 2003 video filmed at the U.S. Air Force Academy by the Campus Crusade for Christ proclaims that the group wants to create "government-paid missionaries." Several cadets appear in the video in uniform.
A DVD distributed in 2005 by the Campus Crusade for Christ's Military Ministry features Tommy Nelson, a pastor from Denton, Texas, telling a group of uniformed Texas A&M cadets:
I, a number of years ago, was speaking at the University of North Texas -- it happens to be my alma mater, up in Denton, Texas -- and I was speaking to an ROTC group up there, and when I stepped in I said, "It's good to be speaking to all you men and women who are in the ministry," and they all kind of looked at me, and I think they wondered if maybe I had found the wrong room, or if they were in the wrong room, and I assured them that I was speaking to men and women in the ministry, these that were going to be future officers.
The first question in the study guide that accompanies the video is: "If you are in the military, then you are also in the m__________."
Finally, see the recent Mother Jones story on Eric Horner Ministries, which performs mandatory "motivational" concerts for U.S. troops that seem to motivate people to find Christ.
What has been the response to MRFF's findings? Weinstein, when I called him just now, told me: "I got a phone call today that said somebody is going to stick a shotgun up my wife's cunt and blow her clitoris through her head." So it goes during the holidays, I guess. And then it's back to singing jingle bells.
Comments
Christians, especially the evangelical sort, are some of the most hateful people I have ever encountered. And I have no doubt, that the shotgun threat would be somehow justified by many of them.

So a couple of christian stores carrying varying levels of christian literature, which available for purchase but not forced upon anyone? This means that the government has been "infiltrated"? Because the christian club wants their members to be examples of love despite being full time military men? Sorry man, I think this is all a bit hysterical. There's a difference between being progressive and just attacking christianity and I think you got a little carried away here, Josh.
PS And as for you guys who say that fundamentalists are the most hateful people out there, be realistic. A small population of people is making tons of noise, but that doesn't mean all "fundamentalists" are of that mind. And, finally for what its worth, the term fundamentalist doesn't really apply to the hateful christians out there because that is not FUNDAMENTALly christian. Fundamental christianity is peace, love, and acceptance. What you are reading about is RADICAL christianity. Evangelicals are those who mean to preach the good news of that love and acceptance. The terms evangelical, fundamentalist, and radical are not interchangeable.
If you're going to claim to be informed, at least play fair.

I think EH is quite naive. The Crusaders who are being converted or deliberately placed in the military are not being encouraged to "act with love." They are being revved up to kill in the name of Jesus by bigoted extremists who are tired of waiting for Armegeddon -- they intend to bring it about themselves. Campus Crusade for Christ has well-known intentions because they're not ashamed -- they openly state their desire to live in a theocracy.
If the U.S. military being subverted from national loyalty to a theocratic force doesn't alarm people, just think "Taliban." There's a good example of what happens when religious zealots are armed and in charge.

I agree that 'Eh' is missing something here. The splitting of hairs over 'fundamentalism' vs. 'radicalism' isn't correct, either, because the argument used to defend the former can defend the latter, as well. As in, 'being radically Christian means being Christian [love, peace, etc.] to a heightened degree and in a sort of tunnel-visioned way. What you're not getting is that Fundamentalist Christians are more about the old testament [hate, war, violence] than about the new testament [Jesus Christ Superstar]. How would defenders of these clubs feel about a Muslim equivalent trying to project its values onto our military from within?

There are some good data points to support the contention that evangelical Christians are trying to run the military their way, but the selection of books at the Px isn't one of them. You can also get some very interesting books in Wiccan spirituality in the Px bookstore. But I don't think that indicates that druids and witches are trying to infiltrate the US military.

Socialist Athiests are equally free to enlist in the military in order to counterbalance the dreaded Christian threat.
If there's so much concern about it, I recommend they organize in order to do so.

Paul- point taken.
CK- Sure there are zealots, always will be. I just think it's foolish to assume that's the majority. As for CCfC, I think that while they certainly want to bring their message to others, I think alikening them to the Taliban is a bit unfair because they don't want to force theocracy on others, they just want to spread their message to all who wish to accept it. Here's their mission statement below...
Purpose:
Helping to fulfill the Great Commission in the power of the Holy Spirit by winning people to faith in Jesus Christ, building them in their faith and sending them to win and build others; and helping the Body of Christ do evangelism and discipleship
Vision Statement:
Helping to build spiritual movements everywhere so everyone knows someone who truly follows Jesus Christ
Values:
Faith, fruitfulness and growth
Direct and strong in their beliefs? Surely. Taliban? Not so much.

EH -- They are not allowed to use the government to spread any message that has to do with religion, as our Constitution guarantees freedom of religion for *every* citizen. Not just the zealous Christians. The fact they are targeting the military is quite alarming. Now, why do you think they want to do that? Since Campus Crusade constantly draws complaints for their militant, end-times-driven attempts at conversion, their cult-like indoctrination techniques, and their aggressively hostile attacks on walk-aways and people of other faiths, I must say, respectfully, you have no idea what you're talking about.

For US Army soldiers entering basic training at Fort Jackson Army base in Columbia, South Carolina, accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior appears to be as much a part of the nine-week regimen as the vigorous physical and mental exercises the troops must endure.
That's the message directed at Fort Jackson soldiers, some of whom appear in photographs in government issued fatigues, holding rifles in one hand, and Bibles in their other hand.
Frank Bussey, director of Military Ministry at Fort Jackson, has been telling soldiers at Fort Jackson that "government authorities, police and the military = God's Ministers,"

As a US Marine, I can tell you all from my experience that I was never asked or forced to become a Christian, Catholic, Atheist or anything else except a sold out Marine. We were never forced to go to church but CHOSE to go to get away from the DI's for awhile. It was the best part of the week because we could talk like normal people. I can't speak for the army, but the Marine Corps is more concerned with war fighting skills than they are about any spiritual issues. Our god was our Senior Drill Instructor and earning that uniform was our only goal. There was no time for all the other stuff that you all are referring to. Once in the fleet, I can assure you again that I was never approached in uniform by anyone trying to save my soul. I can't even recall being approached on base. Relax, the Marines are still fine, crazy and ready to kill for you and your way of life.

Trust me, fellow MJ readers:
In the USAF, Christian Zealots seeking to officially co-mingle church and state through the profession of arms are alive and well and spreading. It doesn't have to be an overt majority right now...all it takes are true believers in key leadership positions, and a vocal minority sprinkled in the ranks, and a silent herd of sheep, many sympathetic to the cause of the Master Religion and some too darn scared to oppose it, due to fear of personal and professional ostrasism. Kill all the fags or drive them from 'our' country, let the poor people who are too stupid to get proper educucations and jobs (such as those black folks in New Orleans) starve...we aren't wasting our hard-earned money on any more taxes (this from officers who are sucking the big blue teet making their living off of other people's taxes)...kill all the heathans who are threatening us because they don't want to let us have access to our God-given oil under their lands...the US government should legalize drugs and be the sole provider, then poison all the druggies and kill their kind off once and for all...construct a military bombing range along the entire US-Mexican border and practice our skills by bombing Mexican illegal immigrants (kill two birds with one stone)...I have heard all this, and more...it didn't used to be like this back in the late 80s...but I have seen the rise of the American Taliban in military uniform...and you are funding it! The constitutuion is dying, if not dead already.

As the owner of the Enabled By Christ store I would like you to know that no one from any publication contacting me about our relationship with AAFES or the US military..which is honestly almost non-existent.
We were simply a vendor renting space in the BX complex and nothing more.
We are a privately owned partnership with staff of just the 2 of us.
We do not go brow beat people to come into our store or to visit our website.
