$39,000 a year. That's the going rate for tuition at hot liberal arts colleges like Williams and Amherst, which came in first and second respectively in U.S. News & World Report's best liberal arts colleges rankings. The 10 schools on our list may not bother to juke their stats to make U.S. News' short lists, but they still have plenty to offer—and for a lot less dough. Know of a college that¹s both cool and cost-efficient? Nominate it here for the 2010 MoJo Mini College Guide.

KU?? Way to go Hawks! Have no idea who delta force is, but KU has always offered great value and, for the engaged student, an excellent education. New Chancellor this year should shake up some of the dominance of athletics over academics!

Luther Butler
I previously posted about being given LSD by the CIA while in the Navy. Go to this site, look at La Plata County Series until you find the novels Homesteaders and Sheep herders, and the second novel, D.H. These two novels are about my childhood. Most of us store childhood pleasantries, but the LSD unlocked those memories so I made novels about them.

TCNJ

As a TCNJ (The College of New Jersey) alum, I can say with some confidence that LollaNoBooza is very, very lame. TCNJ is great academically, but don't expect much of a nightlife or "college town" experience.

brilliant

Right. "I mean, the college is good academically, but the party scene is lame." Priorities??

If you prefer a list of party schools perhaps you could consult Hustler.

no profile pic for comment author

As a current student I can

As a current student I can say that lollaNObooza has gotten ridiculously better over the years and is pretty awesome now. And yeah, we don't have a party scene like Rutgers, but we make other schools in our bracket look childish. Our campus is the best in the state and if it weren't for Princeton, we'd own the market for top 5% high school graduates.

Hope Rocks

Hope isn't just a great school because it's a "value." Hope and the community of Holland have so many awesome things to offer. Beautiful beaches in the summer, awesome campus life, good food and the chance to live in one of the many on-campus "cottages" It's only about 2.5 hours from Chicago and a 3 minute walk to the Amtrak station. None of the "Christian" aspects of Hope are forced upon anyone. Hope also has an extensive Greek Life community. Oh, Yeah, and Hope has great professors too.

TCNJ

TCNJ is a bargain, but try getting your child into it. It is easier to get accepted in some Ivy League schools.

TCNJ

Completely agree; TCNJ is an awesome school, but its hard as hell to get into.

reality check

Uhhm, have y'all lost your minds!? $20k a year *is* blowing the budget in a big way when freshmen can only get about $5500 in Stafford loans and their parents' income is included in generating some ass-backwards estimate of how much money they should have on hand in cash. Please get in touch with reality and write me a list of schools that provide a good education under $10k. if you can't find ten schools that provide a good education under $10k, write about that.

Why didn't they just add the

Why didn't they just add the entire CSU (California State University) system? Affordable (?) college with practical and often "green" degrees. As of last year, my brother's tuition in the engineering program at Chico State was less than $2000 a semester. (When I graduated in 2002, it was $1035 a semester).
We both have awesome educations and had small classes that were taught by PhDs. Boooyeah!

Good luck getting in to any

Good luck getting in to any CSU college now that CA is broke they have cut funding by millions and are determined to ruin the best college system in the country.

I also agree that any school over $10k a year for most people is undoable.

college

want a really cheap education? sneak across the u.s./mexico border, pay a few electric bills and pick up a drivers license in a sanctuary city then apply at a college that gives in=state tuition to illegal immigrants. you will probably also get mucho financial aid from one source or another.

Community Colleges Rock

Community colleges as a whole is actually a great way to get a good education at a great price. After getting an associates degree, you can transfer to a 4 year university.

College ranking does matter

College ranking does matter especially if you children are enrolled in a exclusive school. You always want that the tuition fees being paid are worthy of the quality education that your children are getting. All kinds of people, especially parents, look out for the U.S. News and World Report college rankings, as a favorable number in U.S. News and World Report rankings means more prestige for colleges, and therefore, more students and more money. (That's the bottom line – and many claim it's a padded list.) Critics claim that the rankings are bogus and that Harvard, Yale, and Princeton get the top spots just on the virtue of reputation, rather than actual merits. Regardless, parents still want their kids in a high ranked U.S. News and World Report school – in the hopes that a degree from those schools will mean their child could potentially never need a payday loan – or maybe even auto financing.

Mini College Guide

Geek IS chic! Kettering University is a great place for those who want to APPLY their education/knowledge. Where else can you: find students with motor-driven sofas, get to work with the State Police Bomb Squad on a class project or turn your blog into a business and make money doing it? I love it here!

Kettering rocks! I'm so glad

Kettering rocks! I'm so glad to see my awesome little school getting some recognition!!! I've been graduated & working full time for 1 yr and everyone thinks I've been there longer . . . why? Because I spent 2 years as engineer before I even got a degree! All Kettering grads come out way ahead of other engineering grads. There's nothing better than a school that lets you learn by doing rather than sitting in a classroom for four straight years. . .

TCNJ? Are You Sure of your Facts

You state two things about TCNJ:

--community service scholarship; yeah, but these are for a fairly limited number of students. Most of the other students aren't that CS oriented.

-- NoBoozaPaLooza is totally Lame. People are wasted at lots of other events, and most of the off-campus apartments are Party Central.

Who cares about LollaNoBooza...

Academically, TCNJ far surpasses any school in NJ except for Princeton. I had a better experience there as an undergraduate than most people do in graduate school... and when I went to grad school at Ohio's finest university, I was better prepared than everyone in my program. Kudos to the administration at TCNJ for allocating funds properly. New facilities and great professors make a man healthy, wealthy, and wise (unlike football).

Hope College a "Cool School"? Um...

Hope used to be a safe place for eccentrics- which in Holland, Michigan includes anyone with an interest in the arts, really, as it's a VERY conservative town.

Recently, however, Hope refused to allow Dustin Black, the screenwriter of Milk, to participate in a campus roundtable on sexuality issues, because he might be "too controversial", or to screen Milk on campus. They limited his campus visit to English classes, period, for the purpose of talking about screenwriting, period.

It's a pity that he wasn't allowed to instead talk about censorship or homophobia.

By "too controversial", Hope's administrators mean "gay and not dying of shame".

Think twice before you spend the kind of money Hope costs so that you can log four years in a bubble of conservatism and hatefulness.
