As Congress threatens to repeal the assault weapons ban, Mother Jones ups its campaign against gun violence, releasing our first-ever compilation CD. In “You Are What You Shoot,” 12 Midwest rock bands–including Mekons, Seam, Freakwater, and The Charming Beggars–donated tracks to raise public consciousness about handgun violence. Proceeds will fund future MoJo coverage of violence issues and youth outreach by the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.

Chicago rocker WXRT is the media sponsor of the project, which will kick off with a May 14 benefit at Chicago’s Cabaret Metro. Do your part to help stop handgun mayhem–and get some great music–by sending $14 to “You Are What You Shoot,” Mother Jones, 731 Market St., Suite 600, San Francisco, CA 94103.

HERE’S WHERE YOU COME IN

We’ll say it loud and clear: No one gets to tell Mother Jones what to publish or not publish, because no one owns our fiercely independent newsroom. But that also means we need to directly raise the resources it takes to keep our journalism alive. There’s only one way for that to happen, and it’s readers like you stepping up. Please help with a donation today if you can—even a few bucks will make a real difference. A monthly gift would be incredible.
