Brodner’s Person of the Day: Smart Idea Of The Day

Smart Idea of the Day

In yesterday’s Times, the chilling news that now that European waters are being fished out, European fishermen are doing the same in African waters. This makes fish scarce for the African people as well as puts African fishermen out of business, forcing immigrants to flood into Europe by way of the Canary Islands. African countries like Senegal need the money, so understandably (or stupidly; take your pick) they go ahead with this deal.
Here is the actual moment where we see the human effects of our taking down the ecosystem. And so the 21st century truly begins. Hey, what’s wrong with my remote?

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and the wealthy wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone. If you value what you get from Mother Jones, please join us with a tax-deductible donation today so we can keep on doing the type of journalism 2019 demands.
