Lie by Lie: The Mother Jones Iraq War Timeline (8/1/90 - 2/14/08)
In this timeline, we've assembled the history of the Iraq War to create a resource we hope will help resolve open questions of the Bush era. What did our leaders know and when did they know it? And, perhaps just as important, what red flags did we miss, and how could we have missed them? This is the third installment of the timeline, with a focus on Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, and torture in a time of terror.

Your Timeline was great.Always new facts I missed. However,I did not find any mention of the role of British Intelligence. In late 2002,British Foreign Secretary,Jack Straw sent Chief British Intelligence agent,Richard Dearlove over to meet with our CIA.When he returned to the UK,he wrote his boss a report as follows."Sir,what the Americans are planning is quite alarming. It their intention to invade Iraq. They need any intelligence we might have to support their plans.Sir we do not have any intelligence that would help them. With all due respect Sir,it is my humble opinion that the British government would be ill advised to become involved in this venture.Jack Straw replied,Richard,I must tell you,The Prime Minister (Tony Blair)has determined to support the Americans in this matter.Give them any intelligence you might have, and of course this info.is confidential.Do not share it.Richard Dearlove replied,Sir I have the utmost respect for you and the Prime Minister, however in all good concience,I cannot be involved in this matter. At this time,I am submitting my application for retirement."The rest is history.CIA director George Tenet was not quite so noble calling the attack a slam dunk. When that did not quite work out,he fell on his sword, and George Bush pleaded bad intelligence.Really, bad intelligence?I have been paraphrasing for like of space, however you can dig it out in the Downing memos which finally leaked in 2005,I believe.Posted by Olarky

Thank you! In the future, history students will study this horrible period in our history and the criminals in the Bush administration, and they will wonder in awe at the gullibility of most of the press and of the American people in 2003. Five years later, the right-wing rednecks still defend this unneccessary war and their monkey in the White House! 4,000 dead Americans (so far) to retaliate for 3,000 dead on September 11? 500 Billion dollars for the war. Tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians dead. Zero WMD. And more anger in the Middle East resulting from the war gaurantees future terrorism. Brilliant.

Your timeline is an invaluable accumulation of data. Enough said.
The design, however... What's with the design? Simple and useable interface, people. In this design, the text is all live--meaning that whenever users try to highlight blocks of text, they get sent to a link. When the "back" button is hit, it's too late-- the flash has reset.
The scrollbar scrolls more than one page, meaning the user has to constantly mouse-scroll. And forget "page down" and arrow keys.
Guys, you've provided a wonderful resource here, but only the most computer-savvy users can maximize it. How about a text-only alternate?

I have never seen this much fabrication and lies. The people that write this stuff must get all their info from Terrorist websites. They probably support org. like HAMAS, HEZBALLAH, and TALIBAN. I bet the people who are responsible for this crap get their jollies off when they see American Troops getting killed. I'm serious, they do.....

MoJo... I beg, where is the rest of the time line... 2003 to 2008? We count on you (and the rest of the independent media) to keep us up to date. Have you been silenced?

Okay progressives, answer me this:
Who said "Perhaps I was as much opposed to the war as anyone in this nation, but when we get into a fight I am one of those who intend to clean the hell out of the other fellow - the grafter, the thief, the murderer." - Answer, Mother Jones herself.
Who's Justice Dept created the "American Protective League" which at it's strongest boasted 250,000+ secret police in over 600 US towns, forced over 400 magazines out of business, and arrested over 175,000 Americans? Answer, Woodrow Wilson.
Who defended the right of government to arrest anyone critical of the government arguing that arrest was acceptable if the speech posed "a clear and present danger"? Answer, Oliver Wendell Holmes.
Who stated his aim as to create "no dividing line between the rich and poor, and no class distinctions to breed mean envies"? Answer, George Creel, head of the CPI, Wilson's propoganda machine.
Who first established a "community of the people"? Answer, Adolf Hitler.
I ask the above because you on the left are so quick to presume a tyranny, a fascism coming from the political right. However, you own past, which you continually tie to the glory of "Wilsonian Democracy" is riddled with far more severe tyrannical and fascist tendencies. Explain.

Thanks greatly to Mother Jones for the timeline. It follows all transgressions of this rogue administration very closely, and accurately. From the early trumpeting for the war, and even before that, this administration has been wholly about spin to satisfy the whims of no more than a handful of people close to GWB. Where it has left us as a nation, in the eyes of fellow Americans, to say nothing of the rest of the world, is beyond description. So few people have taken us down such a bad path, one that will take generations to recover from. The democrats missed a golden opportunity to show America and the world what the majority of our citizens hold dear. Honesty, integrity, and upholding the constitution. Impeachable offenses were not addressed at the behest of Pelosi, who, when she said, "impeachment is off the table", did a great disservice to the integrity of this country, as well as denigrated the intent of our fore fathers when they wrote the constitution. GWB said it himself that, "I'm the war president", and I believe his intent to go to war was determined way before the discussion to the runup to the war. A fine mess we are in, thanks to our totally incompetent administration. And as sad, the current crop of candidates who can't wait to line up and take over when GWB leaves, in my eyes offer no solace. As a lifelong democrat, I must leave the party and vote totally independent from now on. The republicans fail the American people by not doing anything for the masses, and the democrats, even with a majority, are powerless to do anything about it.

Wow, thanks so much for creating this valuable timeline. It's absolutely sickening what Bush & Company has done to this country. If only everyone had investigated his past business performance, they would have easily found out he bankrupted every company he was involved with. Now he's doing it to the entire USA, while he personally becomes a billionaire. Every citizen that voted for Bush should hang their head in shame for every soldier and civilian life that's been lost in the the war in Iraq. Let's all hope the next President has a conscience.

This is a really brilliant use of Flash, wonderfully designed and extremely informative. Thank you so much for taking the time to construct this -I hope it stays online for decades.
I'm astounded by the number of people asking "where are the lies?" By the time the war in Iraq started the Bush administation had managed to convice 80% of the American public that Saddam Hussein was involved in the Sept 11 attacks without a shred of evidence to back it up. That is one of the best examples of mass deception in world history. At last polling, 30% still believe this lie to this day -not coincidentally a number equal to Bush's approval rating.

Re: Iraq & Iran. Of the many questions I have for Congress & the Executive Branch, one of them is - What possessed you people to think that you could turn this country/government into a democracy? That's like saying you can take a toddler who's used to daddy telling it what to do & turn it into an educated, voting individual overnight. The fact that our public servants ignored this fundamental point makes me believe even more strongly that this is all about controlling oil & colonialism. C'mon. It's the third millenium for goodness sakes.....

Yes, a 3rd party must develop, but please, a mistake is not a lie. Bad judgement is not a lie. Stop saying Bush lied. The data he was supplied with came from the CIA, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Australia, and people inside Iraq, A MISTAKE IS NOT A LIE. And it was not wrong to have said back in 2005 that we were winning. Do you want a President that tells his troops we have no chance? A Preident must do what he must do to keep the spirits of the troops high.

Why are troops in Iraq? The question has to be asked, Are they there to defend Israel? For example, Isent e mails to the white house, Senator Clinton, fox news, sixty minutes, and I wrote a letter to the seaker of the house. I asked if we pull our troops out of Iraq would we have to come back and defend Israel? No response to a yes or no question.
All the terrorist and suicide bombers were transfered to Iraq from the Israel borders. Vice Pres says we are not there for the oil we are there for Peace the question is for whom?
I'm a vet from the Korean war and two tours in Viet Nam. At both place we fought China. Now China is building all our goods. I'm happy we saved China from Japan. China Thanked us by attacking us in Korea. Our Government and business world believe in Slavery. Have a nice day. Tom

Hi,
Is there anyway to print out the entire time line to look at it all in one spot? Or is there a way to see it all as a whole, to scroll through, rather than in tiny bits? It would make simple browsing of it much easier. You've done fantastic work in the research, but it's a little hard to read in this form. Good for searching and organizing categories of lies, but not good for simple reading from front to back.
Thanks,
Stan

Excuse me Mr. "Support the Troops" but I hate the US Military and I have every right to do so.
I am sick of providing them with what amounts to a welfare check, as they have done absolutely NOTHING to defend this country during my entire lifetime.
And I am not leaving the country, either. Perhaps YOU should leave, instead?
Preferably you could take these legions of military welfare queens with you and get your damned hands out of my pocket.
And no, I am PROUD to say that I didn't serve in the US Military Welfare Brigades.
While you may feel a desire to go and murder people (on my dime, BTW. Never forget that.) over non-existent WMD, vague ramblings about "Domino Theories" and other such stupidity, most of the rest of us are simply too smart to join you.
Oddly, the Washington Establishment which brought you our current wars were of the same mind!
I'm speaking of Draft Dodgers like Dubya, protecting Alabama from "The Cong" and Dick "I have other priorities" Cheney.
Then you come on here spewing nonsense about cowardly "liberals" LOL! It's priceless to see you phony-balooney Conservatives twist yourselves into knots like this!
So, in closing, please tell the troops I WANT MY MONEY BACK! They can all get off the taxpayer teat and go get straight jobs and finally become productive citizens again.
If for some reason they are unable to remove their hand from my pocket and go straight, perhaps these bums can manage to get themselves shot in one of our many wars of choice and die without costing the rest of productive society any more money?
Go Ron Paul! Go US Constitution!
"Isolationism" forever! Empire? Never!

You obviously don't realize that Bush Co. has not found Bin Laden because they do not want to, war is too profitable a business, it is the Bush/Bin Laden family's greatest business venture yet, after all they have been doing business for years. It is not because they do not have the resources to find him. The Neo-cons are the people who invite further terrorist attacks against the United State by continuing to beat the war drums even when the most of the nation, but a stupid minority of people like yourself, don't support the war. Get a grip on reality man, you've been curled up in that stupidity induced fetal position way too long.

You know what makes me and allot others sick is to here people who live in American living the American Dream talking trash about are troops telling nothing but lies on all parts of politics. You have nut cases like Eli Pariser from Move On.ORG who was born with a silver spoon up his ass and has not worked a hard day in his pathetic life just like the rest of the Democrat liberals and then turn around and complain about how much they hate this country and are troops. There is a very simple way for you spineless viruses and that is pack your bags and move out of are country. None of them has ever served in the military and if they did they had light duty or they turn on fellow troops as John Kerry did and Jack Murtha did by calling are troops murders and the terrorist freedom fighters. You Democrat liberals have no balls if it was not for republicans with are Iron fist and brick backbone this country would be a hell hole because you Democrat liberals are nothing more but gutless spineless wimps and thats the truth. And why to i keep saying Democrat Liberal because there is no different between the too.

Considering that the president declared that a state of war exists between the U.S. and Iraq and Afhanistan, isn't the identifying of secret agents(spies) an act of treason? And isn't an act of treason during a time of war punishable by a death sentence?

Important piece of work. On the WMD issue I am not so knowledgeable but the links between Saddam's regime and al Qaeda were quite real and have become illuminated through the postwar widespread cooperation between the two sides that I've worked to document at www.regimeofterror.com.
This doesn't mean that all the specifics of the relationship which were alleged were true, they obviously weren't, but the links were and are indeed real.

The Bush administration made some major miscalculations and used a lot of "spin" to justify them, but as far as I can see, their main focus was exactly right. We need to fight Islamic terrorism, and Iraq was as good a place as any to fight it. We're not allowed to fight it in Italy, Syria, Pakistan or even in the US; fortunately, they go to Iraq to fight us, and haven't attacked on our soil again. My two sons are in the military, fighting terrorists there so my two daughters can live safely here. I support them and the president one hundred percent!

It's sad that there is so much polarizing journalist in this great country. They are more concerned with being correct then presenting the facts. This timeline is great, it covers all the republican mistakes that lead up to the war. It does not show how and why they were made. It does not cover any of the UN actions against Iraq. Not a ounce of the democrats actions and votes agianst Iraq, nothing... Yep, those evil republican neocon elitist did it all by themselves while the poor champions of liberty could not stop them....
Please, be fair.....

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members ... It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons."

Very good job!
This timeline is impressive.
It'd be even more interesting to have the same timeline on the book of Webster Griffin Tarpley "911 False Flag Terrorism - Made in USA".
Now that would be a revealing timeline!
Posted by: Stephane on 03/26/07 at 2:45 AM
Doug - your argument is absurd and hollow. You make one good point, that the timeline does not tell the whole story. For a set of situations as complex as these, there will never be a full and comprehensive set of facts.
As to the rest, what a bunch of baloney. The folks at MoJo have simply provided information here - and these are well-known and established facts, so your point about whether or not this is truthful info is ridiculous.
Further, the timeline isn't colored by their commentary. It is not opinion journalism, it is a presentation of actual events and statements laid out in a chronological fashion. They allow us, the readers, to draw our own conclusions. If you are uncomfortable with these facts, too bad. You don't have to like what these facts suggest, but to call them opinions is simply erroneous.
Next, how is providing factual information a "suppression" of other views? That's a preposterous statement and is drenched in faulty logic. If you really want to debunk this timeline, you'll have to do much better.
Next, who said this timeline was supposed to be objective? It is factual, to be sure, but as I freely acknowledge, not the whole story. Anybody who describes a POV as objective is either foolishly ignorant or a damned liar. Objectivity is an abstract and artificial construct. It rarely exists in the real world where the whole truth is rarely known.
Finally, I have to differ with your definition of journalism. I prefer a respected source, the American Heritage Dictionary:
jour·nal·ism
n.
1. The collecting, writing, editing, and presenting of news or news articles in newspapers and magazines and in radio and television broadcasts.
Posted by: Deacon on 03/15/07 at 9:27 AM
Mojo's Iraq Timeline does a good job of recounting headlines that support its opinions. That doesn't make it journalism, nor does it make it original or truthful. It’s just a convenience way for those who agree with you to avoid doing their own homework. If you really want to contribute to the national conversation, I suggest you make a two-column layout where events supporting your opinion fall in one column and events supporting an opposing opinion fall in a second column. Are you willing to put your truths up for scrutiny or are you really about suppressing other views? So far your actions clearly show you choose the latter. Just don’t' tell us your view is objective journalism. Give us a little credit, OK?

I don't know what we citizens would do without mags and sites like MoJo. The propaganda and disinformation campaigns waged against us by our own government on a daily basis have grown so sophisticated that it would be impossible to sort through the complex web of lies, deceit and misinformation without the assistance of good, ethical journalists working fearlessly and tirelessly to bring us the truth.
I salute all of you at MoJo for bringing this timeline to us; it is a critically important component in debunking the Bush Cabal's lie machines.
Posted by: Nez on 03/09/07 at 5:45 AM
In the October 11, 2000 debate with Gore, I think you missed a very important statement made by Bush. Namely, Bush said, "I think our troops ought to be used to help overthrow the dictator when it's in our best interests."
In context, it went:
"MODERATOR: Sure, absolutely, sure. Somalia.
BUSH: Started off as a humanitarian mission and it changed into a nation-building mission, and that's where the mission went wrong. The mission was changed. And as a result, our nation paid a price. And so I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation-building. I think our troops ought to be used to fight and win war. I think our troops ought to be used to help overthrow the dictator when it's in our best interests. But in this case it was a nation-building exercise, and same with Haiti. I wouldn't have supported either."

Another lie, reported by the Canard Enchaîné, probably the best well informed weekly newspaper in France :in 4 years, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars costed over 2.000 billion USD to the american people, not 'only' 400 billion as officially admitted by Bush administration. The Canard Enchaîné quotes diplomatic sources giving this information. The american people should know that this wars are not only a human desaster, not only a political desaster, not only a democratic desaster, but also an economical desaster for them (except for a few who make a lot of money out of it...).

PS--Headline of 'Lie by Lie' is irresponsible, biased, and obviously a precursor to a project of spin. Ridiculous. Also, you should be embarrassed of producing an image of the President of the U.S. riding a nuclear missile targeted at an outline of the U.S., smiling, as if it is his INTENTION to blow us all up. Tell me what your post-9-11 plan would have been. Hindsight is 20-20. Let's just stop the finger pointing and get the region cleaned up and get out of there. You are so hot headed to blame Bush for everything, who, 6 years ago was labeled "stupid and ignorant", but now someohow, has masterminded an ongoing series of lies over several years to achieve his datsardly plan of world dominance. Does that make any sense to you? Just shut up and talk about what we can do to pull something positive out of the Middle East ashes.

Nice spin, MotherJones. I guess I will stick to news sources a little more trustworthy than you. You should stick to the BS that you are good at, and leave 'news reporting' to less biased sources.

Congratulations on a very useful and well-researched tool. I intend to e-mail this link to all my political friends on both sides of the political spectrum.
I read many of the dissenting blogs and aside from their angry tone I wish someone would suggest corrections to whatever they believe to be errors of fact or context. Most of us who have followed this operation from the beginning and thought was a very bad idea all along know this timeline tracks depressingly well with what we've seen and read, but with a lot of enlightening detail.
I know I represent the views of many of my friends in uniform - I served in the Navy 1978-2000. I love my country and the Constitution on which it was built. The current Administration does not, in my view, reflect those values.

Ummmmm...can someone please tell me what the lies are? I didn't see a single lie. Maybe I'm missing something here. My IQ is only 145, I don't know all of the liberal talking points. So could someone educate me here and tell me where the lies are?
You could start by quoting someone and then showing facts that prove that person was not telling the truth. I would consider that a lie.
This is just a bunch of propaganda.

Mother Jones Own Timeline of it's Own Lies Needed...
Unfortunately, You got Your Own Personal Facts Right, But, THE TRUE FACTS SUPPORTED BY EVIDENCE YOU ABSOLUTELY GOT WRONG.
Hey, Mother J,
Why do you pretend to represent me, when you are a paid mouthpiece for the Democrat machine?
We need a timeline of (your lies)when Mother Jones decided NOT TO BE INDEPENDENT and became just another sellout.
We know what we were really fighting for in the 1960's and 1970's. Who do you represent? Not anything that is American?
Posted by: San Francisco Lib on 11/01/06 at 2:07 PM
Oooh! Really slick! I shudder to think but that we would be speaking German or Japanese had the 24-hour news cycle along with an extremely myopic, agenda-driven liberal media had been in place back in 1942.
Hindsight is perfect; add to it a predetermined outcome and a very distorted account of the facts and you get a really neat tool such as the timeline above.
Some of the most absurd stories to come out of the press during this war have been those (often very false and/or extremely exaggerated) on prisoner abuses or torture. Oh! And now we're giving non-uniformed, non-U.S.-citizen combatants, for the first time in history, both American-style and Geneva Convention rights where none are found in either the Geneva treaties nor our own constitution.
By the way, last I heard, those poor, abused and tortured souls at Guantanomo are homeless. After all the clamoring, bitching and griping about these mistreated innocents it has come to light that no other nations want to extend amnesty to them. Not even their own countries will take custody of them. Maybe you could give them jobs and shelter them in your home and protect them from the evil empire of the U.S.
Be careful though. They tend to be accident-prone when it comes to the lives of non-islamo-fascists (that'd be the average American).

So sad & pathetic that you cry-baby liberals have to resort to these lies & propaganda against President Bush. Unlike the former president who was too busy getting hummers from fat chicks, President Bush is aggresively fighting those who want to do America harm. Instead of ignoring terrorists (1st WTC bombing, Khobar Towers bombing, embassy bombings in Africa, USS Cole bombings), President Bush is actually trying to capture & kill terrorists. Contrary to what he said to Mike Wallace, President Clinton did not try.
The only reason you label President Bush a liar is because you're trying to get back at the Republicans when they actually caught President Clinton lying. It hurt so bad and it was so disgraceful, that you want to stick that label on President Bush as well. But it's not true & you all know it. Not only did our intelligence agencies say that Iraq had WMD, but so did many other countries (Britain, France, Israel, Russia, etc). Even President Clinton admitted on Larry King that our intelligence agencies were saying that Iraq had weapons. So no rational person is buying that 'Bush is a liar' crap.
This website & Mother Jones would fit well on Air America. Oh wait, nevermind. I forgot that Air America is bankrupt & will soon be out of business.

responsibility. Not one lie by billy c.? He should have at least smoked OBL instead of the infamous cigar sweetened by monica! I guess it's o.k. these days to lie, lie, lie to further an agenda. Whats done is done, there will be plenty of time to debate who did what to whom, and who lied, and who was or wasn't a traitor. There are soldiers still fighting and dying, not only in the middle east, but, across the globe to defeat terrorism. Are we going to be part of the solution or part of the problem? We have lost our way as a country, it's all about politics now, win at all costs, be damned if your politics have nothing to do with truth!

The real history of the Iraq war is yet to be lived. This is not the end. It's not the beginning. It's not even the end of beginning.
No two historical events are identical yet all seem to have common threads. What we have learned or should be learning in Iraq is that Islam will not be denied.
Those who politically oppose the administration cheer the resuls of the was because it shows how nieve the administration was/is about Islam. Those who support the efforts in Iraq do so for identically but oppositely point reasons. Both sides are missing the point, the valuable information about Islam that before could only be theorized.
Islam will not be denied control of the entire world. That's perfectly clear from Iraq. The choices Americans and the rest of the world have to make are about the same as those of past generations lately gone and already forgotten.
There was a time when a good German was a dead German. Sounds outlandish now but at the time it made perfect sense. The same was perhaps more true for Japanese in a segrated, racially predjudice world. You can analysize this truth from the not too distant past. It's a strong hint as to what is coming.
There 1.4 billion Muslims alive today. Tomorrow? The pope did a Freudian slip. The Pakistani president said he was threatened with being bombed back to the stone age. Is there any information in that? Will history record it.

Reparations for Americans who have been trashed for over 400 years, need representation, we do pay taxes..Racism in America is still building new ways to exist and hold us back. Have you seen the effects in the South Bronx? It never ends. Each generation is ripped off of many youth lost to it's affects. These kids yell scream, and dog the empire, yet there isn't an answer yet. Non=profits are ban aids. I do believe that we as people of color and Americans have a better chance to survive with a new order than with Bush! Punto
Reparations are way over due.

I think the timeline show show that there were uN inspectors on the ground for four months before the start of the war, and they had all the intelligence furnished by Bush, and reported no WMD, no stockpiles and no active weapons programs. The inspectors were pulled out so Bush could start bombing Iraq.

Nice work except for one thing. The scroll ARROWS on the scrollbar on the right scroll too much content at once. This is going to cause people to either miss important info or just give up and stop reading. Also, I concur that an HTML version is very necessary. Sometimes flash is nice, sometimes it's technology for technology's sake.

There are three important things i remember in this timeline:
1) I think the end of Jan.03
when some in the know said
that Saddam and Bin Laden were not in cahoots against US...our government supplied
a picture of the two men together and said ,"see they are financing this terrorism together. My ? is: If these
two men never met, and didn't
even like each other, how did they get on this photo together. LIE by LIE. That
photo should be found in archives and tested as that could be a huge wrong they did to the American people.
2) I think the 60 Minutes
report that Dan Rather did in Iraq should be mentioned. Saddam was denying what US ADM was saying and wanted to meet with Pres. Bush.
When asked later that evening
If Bush watched this important interview (very well publicized) He said NO!
When told that Saddam wanted
a meeting with him to stop this war they asked Bush if he would meet with him, he said NO! So the speech that you have Bush saying on the 18th of Mar. 03 is a LIE...
He said he tried diplimacy.. He did NOT! He acted like he had a hot foot to get this war started and he should be
prosecuted to the ultimate degree for all these lies.

Excellent! Remember the threat made to the Taliban in July, 2001, "Carpet of gold or carpet of bombs" BBC News, 18 September 2001, Naik, because it foretold our plan to bomb Afganistan in Qctober. We planned to invade and topple Taliban because we could not get legal right-of-way for gas pipeline because Taliban was not internationally recognized head of state. Ken Lay was having a big problem with this in India and Dick Cheney said he'd help him out. It was done to corner Asian gas/oil market...nothing to do with 9-11.

There seems to be a very significant event I cannot find here. Rumsfeld was in or just out of meeting Saddam, we were helping them and about that time shot down a civilian Iranian Airliner, when a sneak attack by Saddam's airforce sent two exocet missles into the USS Stark, killing maybe 34 sailors.
I found this http://eightiesclub.tripod.com/id344.htm that has the info

We know that Bush lies all the time. Then why is he re-elected? shouldn't we talk about collective responsibility here?

You and I are working the same side of the street. I've been compiling my own timeline, at www.iraqtimeline.com, for four years now, and it's amazing how many bits of information are in your timeline that I missed (and vice versa). Please feel free to use my site as a resource if you like. Congratulations on a fine resource of your own. (I will echo the earlier comment that a lower-tech, non-Flash version is quite desirable.)
Posted by: Max Black on 09/14/06 at 4:39 PM
I was drawn to MJ by a link to this resource, and then was immediately disappointed. My Unix workstation doesn't have Flash and won't in the forseeable future. Active politically, I know that many do not have flash on their computers... when a message is truly important, we ensure that Flash either isn't used, or the site automatically degrades to present the information in a different form (HTML and plain graphics).
So I'm adding my voice to those above who wish for this collection of information to be available in non-Flash format. Sharing the info requires linking, cutting and pasting -- not everyone uses Flash nor can everyone be expected to peruse the whole collection.
If the intent is to inform, broadly, then a complex Flash-based presentation misses the mark. If the intent is to entertain, then, well, its probably dead on.

“Incompetent” is the word most used when increasing numbers of Americans are asked to describe President Bush. This Pew Research finding is not surprising considering Bush’s leadership failures.
He has been unable to motivate his administration or anyone else to get things done. Even when he tries to sluff his responsibility onto others, be it business, local government or foreign lands, he fails in using the bully pulpit to inspire others to make things happen.
This failure at the helm stands in contrast to other presidents that have with few words inspired others to undertake even arduous personal tasks of minimal import to the nation. To wit, back in 1963 President John F. Kennedy jocularly suggested that his chubby press secretary, Pierre Salinger, demonstrate the physical fitness of the White House staff by walking fifty miles in twenty hours.
By Monday following JFK’s offhand remark, thousands of Americans picked up the challenge and were off and walking. When European television showed images of these marchers, a walking craze swept Europe and on as far as Japan. To this day there is an annual Kennedy March in Sittard, Netherlands.
In a more serious matter in later times, lest we forget President Ronald Reagan’s motivating words to one of this nation’s most intractable enemies: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” And he did.
Of course, those were the days of men who successfully changed the tenor of their times; in these, Bush apologists fudge the times in diminution of the man’s inadequacies.
From rebuilding Baghdad to New Orleans, to fixing Social Security to the borders, no mission ever accomplished, no high-water mark along which George W. Bush leaves footprints.

A person who identifies him(her)self as "Vex" posted comments at 1:20 P.M. on 9/10/06, which seem to indicate he(she) does not agree with the general tone of the article. I suggest that "Vex" repudiate the specific items in error (if it can be done), and post any facts contradictory to the information, as it is available. I suspect very strongly that the response will be very short, since there is no repudiating the facts, and nothing can mitigate the stupidity and bold face lies this Administration has foisted off on the American public. I further resent the implication that anyone who doesn't agree with the Administration is a communist or terrorist. I think "Vex" should "move to China, or North Korea and leave us real Americans alone." Because, you see, real Americans think, and use facts and intelligence to judge situations, not blind, lemming-like adherence to "the company line".

I looked but maybe I missed when Sadam said please send inspectors to look at anything they want. It was shortly befor the start of war.The Bush reply was that its too late the war will start. There was no stopping Bush in his drive to war. We can see it when he tells Sadam to get out of town in 48 hours. Where is the carrot? If you were Sadam where would you go? No where and they knew it. At that time they could have sent in the deal closers and ran that goverment while Sadam was the puppet. They would have gotten all the Oil and riches.Which is why they were there to begin with. Pure arrogance.
Does it make you wonder if any resonable "carrots" were offered to the Taliban goverment of Afganistan? Or were these old men in Kabul hell bent to go live in the mountain caves and relive there youth roughing it in the snow? There maybe a Bush White house motto and it goes like this "You can't cheat an honest man or smarten up a chump"(WC}

First, I don't understand why a country protecting its interests is a bad thing, as seems to be the tone of your little selective timeline.
Secondly, in the portions I scanned from the 90's I see no mention of Bill Clinton bribing North Korea with grain or nuclear reactors, or letting them continue with their plans for nukes while Jimmy Carter was running around saying he "defused" the situation.
I also seem to no mention of pretty much anything to do with Bill Clinton's role in the letting Bin Laden get away before 9-11? Did I miss something?
I suppose since you are catering to the people who already think this stuff is all the facts there are and probably all hate American and Bush, you may get some good comments. Too bad anyone with half a brain can see through this crap.
America is the big bad wolf, right? Why don't you all move to China, or North Korea and leave us real Americans alone.

People say Bush doesn't have a plan. Well they were wrong, he does have a plan, not a very good plan, and some might say a plan made to fail. But in the eyes and dreams of many the ultimate plan, the final plan, the plan that brings the world into a new age. Bush's anxious little mind was hoping for immortality; he wants to be remembered for all time, he wants to be the next Moses. So how could he pass up the opportunity to be the one who ushers in the 'End of Days'. This is Bush's dream of dreams, his true truth, the historical legacy he yearns for.
Or maybe he just opened the door to the End of his own days. Let's remember him for what he really is, a poor scared ignorant little person, flung into the most powerful seat the world has ever known.

When you extend the timeline to the present, which I hope you can do, I suggest a tag for the Plame/Wilson debacle, as it sheds much light on the underhanded methods of Rove, et al. If anything might bring down this administration, it could be impeachment for war crimes. Perhaps some links to the impeachment "now" websites would also help.

Your right about lies, but you got the wrong president. Clinton had so many terror attacks unending and without
response, unless you call taking out a aspirin factory
in Libyia and going after the very dangerous terror group in Waco tough on terrorism. Also the first attack on the WTC
in 1993 was by a Iraqi intelligence officer. So much about
Iraq not part of the war on terror. Also if you read sites
regarding the plan to blow-up airplanes by Randy Usaf a Iraqi intelligence office was keep hush by the Clinton gang
specifically regarding plans to fly planes into building. From the first WTC bombing,Black Hawk down,Kobai tower bombing, the US embassy bombings, the US Cole and the list goes on shows beyond a reasonable doubt That the Clintons and democrat followers have a dismal record of
dealing with terrorism. Clintons hatred of the military
is no secret. So thats what you get when you expect
lawyers to try toprotect us from terrorists. Bill is
a likable guy and very personable and entertaining guy, but he got caught with his pants down again, this time
on protecting the USA. See path to 911 abc.

There are some odd omissions, including Clinton's June 26, 1993, cruise missile attack on Iraq's Mukhabarat headquarters complex in retaliation for the reported attempt by Iraqi intelligence to assassinate former President George H.W. Bush in Kuwait (see timeline entry for April 14, 1993).
I hope you'll continue to update the timeline.

Very good work. Should be required reading before any American casts a vote in a federal election.

I too would be happy if I could copy and past tidbits, so that I could share them with people who won't read the entire timeline, but whom I could goad into trying to defend GWB in the face of incontrovertable proof of his bad acts.

I am surprised that you don't include the California energy crisis on your timeline. That should be noted in the record alongside the secret energy commission, as the first broadside from this criminal cabal.

ADDITIONAL INFO TO ABOVE POST.
Go here first, then search the name:
Posted by: RR on 09/03/06 at 3:12 AM
I searched this chronical for just one name. It is not here!
The most important and vital part of the Gulf War history has been omitted (and always is, in all records of the Gulf War).
Why?
Maybe because it is so horrific that the American people and the world must never find out.
The name is Peter Kawaja.
Now go check it out and find the TRUTH about the Gulf War.

Some things missing:
1990: fake Iraq incubator story
1991: fake Iraq sattellite images
1995: testimony of Hussein Kamel

The content is excellent and the programming impressive, but it would be much more convenient and accessible if one could simply print out the items in chronological order on one page. It takes a long time to read through the content from start to finish because of all of the clicking and mousing involved (and the buttons are very small).

There is no 1996.
Hence, no Perle/Feith/Wurmser "Clean Break" document which recommended "replacing Saddam Hussein with a Hashemite monarchy."
Major oversight, dudes.

You know, and you progressive intellectuals should realize this- since the war was claimed to be launched in the belief that Saddam had WMD and was a threat because of it... what was found or not found months afterward is wholly irrelevant. I'm afraid to make that case, you've got to produce a document which states- and has the authority to do so, that Saddam Hussein had no WMD stockpiles or production capability when we made those claims. Then we can speculate on whether Bush knew this document existed.
If what you all claim is true, how come the Dems on the hill haven't filed impeachment charges- yeah, I know the GOP has the speaker position, the majority- doesn't stop them from levelling the charges- and it's their sworn duty to do just that. If you're right, let's lock the SOB up!

excuse me. ummm.... EXCUSE ME! I would like to ask a question?
The name of the article is "Lie by Lie....(etc)".
Right?
So how come I don't see one of those cute little icons with the word "Lie" on it?
Would that be because then you'd actually have to show an example of the President saying something he really knew to be false?
Just wondering. Thank you for considering my point.
Posted by: batvette on 09/01/06 at 3:48 AM
Your efforts are crucial, as the Busheviks are hell bent on not simply "making history" but re-writing it. Like our Prime Minister Howard here "downunder", Bush and his supporters think the more they repeat a lie, the more convincing it sounds!
Posted by: Max Gross on 08/31/06 at 11:05 PM
A wonderful and massive undertaking!! My only criticism is that you ought to include some of the well documented thought provoking events of 9/11 like the statement from Cheney (as a member of the Neo-Nazi Neocon Project for a New American Century sometime in 1999) that America needed a "New Pearl Harbor" to get action in the Middle East - and the fact that there were military exercises that day (9/11) run by Cheney that included simulations of planes flying into buildings. Could there have been a connection? Any of events like these that can be documented should be in your timeline so readers can make a more educated guess at what is really going on in this country.

Thanks for putting this together.
I remember reading about U.S. efforts to sabotague efforts at the U.N. by a Mexican diplomat during the days leading to the invasion.
The folks at After Downing Street confirmed to me that they were aware of this behind the scene activity which again exposes the lies promulgated by the Bush adminstration that they were trying to avoid war. Is there anyone in your organization who knows about this?

Would be effective to put colored bands down the side showing time Shrub spent at the ranch or otherwise on vacation.

@Dave
I didn't see any comments where anyone said they "hated" flash.
Question use of Flash = Flash Hater
Question Actions of Government = Anti-patriotic
Anyone see any similarity?

Please allow me to amend my previous statement. I should not have said this timeline, which is very very good, made scant mention of Al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden. The timeline does, in fact mention them. However, I am not rescinding my statement of surprise at the omission of the first WTC attack in '93.
Posted by: LTO on 08/31/06 at 9:11 AM
I'm surprised this timeline makes no mention of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, scant mention of Al Qaeda and none of Osama Bin Laden. Though I don't have the time to fact check my hypothesis, I think there is a correlation between the Iraq wars and the Al Qaeda attacks (of '93 and '01) albeit not the correlation the Bush Administration has touted.
According to this timeline, King Fahd permitted American troops on Saudi land under the condition of their removal once the threat had passed. I believe that it was the presence of these troops persisting after the first Iraq War that served as Osama Bin Laden's chief complaint against the United States, and his justification (however flawed and immoral a justification it may be) for the attacks.
So in some sense, the attacks were related to Iraq: they were a result of our continued troop presence in Saudi Arabia.
Fast forward to the run-up to the current war in Iraq. The Bush Administration then told the biggest lie: they conflated the attacks of September 11th, 2001 with Saddam Hussein and his phantom weapons cache as justification for why we should invade Iraq for a second time.

Excellent work - very informative! SUCH A SHAME that it's all done in Flash. I don't know about anyone else but my scroll wheel doesn't work, nor does page up/down, nor the cursor keys... in fact, using the scrollbar arrows to page up and down doesn't work either - it goes too far on one click and skips a little bit of the text. The only way to read the complete text is to click and drag the scrollbar. Umm, I actually take back what I said. This WOULD HAVE BEEN excellent work if it was 1) just a project to build a cool flash "timeline" or 2) just the information without the flash.

I think it's interesting that no one remembers that the first Anthrax death occured about a week before 9/11, when a Florida journalist fell ill. I was in Georgia at the time, ill with some sort of pneumonia that I probably caught at a convention in Atlanta, which is why I remember that very well.
Posted by: Helge on 08/31/06 at 8:05 AM
Um...where are the lies? I thought this would be an article siting quotes and then proving that Bush lied. All I found instead was a bunch our Mother Jones inaccurate political hacking. Hello? Anyone home? Can someone show me a Bush lie? Just one? Most of the quotes aren't even from Bush.
I think the article should be re-titled "Mother Jones lies about Bush"
Posted by: John Davis on 08/31/06 at 7:20 AM
Strange that with a title of "Lie by Lie", there isn't a "tag" to identify the lies. Are you condidering inteligence that turns out to be false, a lie?
Also, some of the facts you rely on are disputed. I suppose disclosing that wouldn't achieve your purpose...

The thrill of technology,
The agony of trying to actually get information!

Great interactive work. As a follow up, since we're apparently now fighting "facists," would be a side by side timeline of WWII (a war against real facists) and the war in Iraq. Let's see how Bush and Co. compare to Churchill and Co. since they like to compare themselves in their minds.
Posted by: James on 08/31/06 at 5:47 AM
Great Work, but can you actually tell us what the lies were?
Posted by: Matt M on 08/31/06 at 12:19 AM
Great work, well researched, and excellently presented.

You missed at least one huge lie: US strikes against Iraq began 48 hours before the deadline.
Also, don't forget the denial of the use of napalm.

Runs abysmally slow, why the hell use Flash 9??? Another example of a good idea being botched by using excessive and unnecessary technology.
Using current Mac OS X, high-speed line, and Firefox, still getting "slow messages" after 10 minutes.
Truly sad... get a programmer who can be efficient with less.

Absolutely wonderful work. I wish every major publication in the US had the guts to do what you've done here: speak the truth.
Keep up the good work - its already working. Look at the poll numbers for the upcoming ('06) election.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you. Please keep this info up. As other posters had mentioned, this helps put into perspective just how sinister and evil this fricken cabal of human beings are. History will vindicate us, but never forget the evil we as a country have reaped on others, and we must make sure that the people who caused this, must serve justice. Charts like this will help show the severity of their crimes. Also as an IT Programmer, the above chart is good enough and I have no problems with it, sure it can be better, but its good considering the horribly high amount of data it must present.

Attention people who hate Flash; I hear ya, but they have gone and put everything in to HTML for you, category by category. Perhaps you should work on your reading comprehension skills; I suppose they anticipated command-line geeks that hate well rendered vector graphics.
Guess what; the second Flash swfs can be indexed, you're dinosaurs.
