Hey PUMAs: McCain Wants to Overturn Roe. This Isn't a Joke
Debra Bartoshevich is a Hillary Clinton supporter (aka PUMA) who just cut an ad supporting John McCain. In a press conference launching the ad, she had this to say about John McCain's record on choice:
Going back to 1999, John McCain did an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle saying that overturning Roe v. Wade would not make any sense, because then women would have to have illegal abortions.
That's true, he did. John McCain has a history of making statements that would appear to put him on both sides of an issue. It's hard to make sense of his positions sometimes. Here, specifically, is McCain's quote from 1999: "I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations."
And here's Carly Fiorina, top McCain surrogate, furthering the confusion earlier this year: "[McCain] has never signed on to efforts to overturn Roe vs. Wade."
But the 1999 quote is outdated and Fiorina is just plain wrong. McCain is an uncompromising pro-lifer. Why not take a look at what the McCain website has to say? It's pretty explicit. Here's a screenshot:

And here's John McCain at the Saddleback Forum, in front of a Christian crowd: "I have a 25-year pro-life record in the Congress, in the Senate. And as President of the United States, I will be a pro-life president and this presidency will have pro-life policies. That’s my commitment, that’s my commitment to you."
McCain's words and McCain's record both suggest that he would support restrictions on choice and appoint Supreme Court justices in the mold of Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas. Let there be no confusion about this.

Dear American Citizens and the mass media of U.S.A.
As a concerned disabled American Veteran and American citizen, I consider it my duty and responsibility to bring following critical characteristics of so called Maverick McCain to you for proving me wrong or right.
"The citizens of the United States of America have the ultimate responsibility to elect the " Right Candidate with the right temperament" to lead our nation' to address our nations present and future moral, democratic, economic, educational, health care, energy, military, and foundational soul of our nation.
In my firm professional opinion that the media should help the common voter to explore and discuss following attributes of Hon. Senator McCain.
1. Does he have a calm, cool, and collected " temper " [ Presidential Temperament ]?
2. Does he have a sound and sustained "Judgment and Caliber"?
3. Does he have a reveal a presidential "Thought-fullness and togetherness" of purpose and positions?
4. Does he lot or little "ex-poser and exploitation" around Washington"?
5. Does he poses enough " Vigor, wisdom and Vision " for our Great-grand Nation?
6. Does he poses foreign policy exploit-es based on " American Values, Virtuous, Vastness"?
7. Does his campaign talk. slogans and ads are based of facts and free of fiction, deception, seduction, and attacks?
If your answer to the above questions is yes then recommend and vote for him.
But in my professional. political, and personal opinion that vote is against the common interests majority of American people, against the world humanity, continuation of status qua and possibly dangerous world order.
Long live U.S.A and its democratic people and their common sense.

The last thing the US needs is a pro-life geriatric at the helm; a man with Victorian values because he is almost Victorian in vintage; and when he says pro-life he's talking about clinging on dear life.
The rest of the world wept when the US elected the idiot W - twice - please, God don't follow an idiot with a man whose dithering borders on senility.
A man who doesn't know he has 7 houses is not mentally fit to preside over much; certainly not 330 million plus who represent a great swathe of the free world.

Actually, I don't think we're going to see 4 years of McCain. If he wins, I'm thinking 1 to 2. Why do I think that? What is one of the major causes of cancer? Stress. And what is one of the biggest causes of stress? The presidency. If McCain wins, I believe his cancer will return and whoever he chooses as his VP, that will be our president. And dear lord, I pray he doesn't pick huckabee. I don't even want to think of the fair tax being implemented. Pray for the poor, huddled masses.

How ironic that the most prominent woman in society, Hillary Clinton, would send sisters to McCain through their blind-sightedness. Hillary has a duty not only to say, "Support Barack Obama" - she has to state, "McCain is pro-life, McCain is pro-war, McCain is economically illiterate and McCain is McSameMcInsane."
Posted by: Amala on 08/25/08 at 2:52 PM Respond
Amala - Agree, but would it be crazy to consider that Hillary actually WANTS McCain to win? That way, her and Mr. Smug can say "I told 'ya so" and run again in 4 years.

It's not just Roe V. Wade at stake, folks. McCain has a clear record of voting against many issues that are important to women and families in general, e.g. Equal pay for Women, SCHIP, legislation that would require abstinence-only programs to be medically/scientifically accurate). He also voted against requiring insurance companies to cover prescription contraception, to abolish funding for birth control and gynecological care for low-income women and to require parental consent for teenagers who want access to birth control.
It's also not just women's issues, we should look at how McCain would affect the next generation: Based on his voting record, we can count on him to continue to support Hawkish Republican foreign policy, economic and environmental policies that would continue to erode our quality of life, while lining the pockets of Corporate multi-national companies. Since McCain has no educational policy to speak of, and has only just recently discovered email and “the internets”, do you really think he “gets” the new competitive landscape that our children are facing, and how desperately we need serious change/innovation in how we teach our children so that they will be able to lead (or even participate in) the next generation of technological advancements? Or is McCain counting on the draft to keep the next generation employed?
And there are the "unknown unknowns". With at least 2 Supreme Court Justice spots coming available in the next 4 years, has anyone has gone through to assess the impact that a heavily-slanted Republican SCOTUS would have on us and on our children’s future? It is not just Roe-v-Wade that is on the laundry list of progressive decisions that Conservatives would like to see overturned.
Ok, so I am also a bit ticked at how Hillary was treated by the MSM and would have liked to have seen a female President. But for the love of GOD, ladies, let's keep some perspective!

Oh, Paleeze! Give it a rest already. We had a Republican controlled White House, Senate, House, and Supreme Court already and Roe was not overturned. Intelligent women have other issues that are also important to them and if ROE was THE most important issue then you Obama babies should have voted for the pro - choice woman candidate - so stop your whining already. I can't wait for McCain to win so he can call up the draft and send you young Obama babies to the military where hopefully you will grow up and learn what qualifications a leader is supposed to have.

Well Ms. Elaine, if you think John is going to be a great prez, shall we ask for an explaination of the "Keating savings and loan debacle"? Or why he has voted 95% with our current "war criminal"? But then what do I know? I thought this country was by and for the "people", not some crazy a**** polititco.

To John,
Hmmm...Reading Comprehension is not one of your strong suits, is it John? I never said John McCain is going to be a great President, did I? The reality is we are stuck with a democrate SELECTEE and Republican McCain. Much as I would like for my guy RON PAUL to win - the reality is we have a two party system so who should I choose - the one who is forgetful due to nature (old age) or the very young one who must be forgetful due to prior cocaine use damaging his memory cells? Let's see... the Russians are in Georgia and Obama thinks we have 57 states....Hmmmm do I really want Obamas finger on the nuke button if his advisor says to him one day, "The Russians are bombing Georgia" Especially if the call comes in at 3am and we know Obama has to get his beauty sleep? I think I will vote for the old guy.

You are full of crap. I have children that will be of age for the draft and don't want to give McWar the chance to try to force them to fight. People like you have serious issues.

If I understood the ad correctly, it's the FIRST time this voter is voting Republican. I think Rasmussen should LEAP onto this phenomenon and see how many LONG-TIME DEMOCRATS will be VOTING REPUBLICAN FOR THE FIRST TIME.
Debra seems to be voting on "character" instead of "platform", which should not shock Obama supporters. Just look at all those early speeches of Obama and Clinton. I believe David CORN developped the contrast between Clinton's tendency to dwell on platform and Obama's tendency to inspire in vaguer terms. It seems ironic to me that Obama supporters would try to use "platform" to lure back ex-Democrats.
But for other future McCain voters, neither the candidate nor the platform is relevant.
The Republicans just had the luck of having a winner surface easily from their process which didn't temporarily "punish" states and which matches up more closely with the real election. The Republican Primary comes across to many people as having been more "democratic" with a small "d". Democrats are temporarily leaving the party in the hope that a November defeat will create an opportunity for party reform.

Kathy, either you are confused or just uninformed -- the Republicans *did* temporarily punish states by taking away delegates from states who moved their primaries up early.

To Elaine:
You are right, McCain isn't going to overturn Roe V. Wade.
Instead, the 3 liberal leaning supreme court justices ready to retire will be replaced by 3 conservative judges who will slowly pick apart roe v. wade over the next two decades.
Kiss you daughters/granddaughters rights goodbye.

Thanks, Kelly, for correcting; I checked it out. You are right. I didn't even notice that states had also gotten penalized on the Republican side of the fence.

To Kb,
Well I guess Hillary should have gotten 97 percent of all the young women who have reproductive rights to worry about then don't you think? As I said before - if women are so concerned about their reproductive rights , then maybe they should have voted in block for Clinton because she is a woman who is pro-choice instead of voting for the "cute" guy. They also should have been very vocal about the sexist crap that was thrown at Hillary if "womens issues" are that important to them. If one woman experiences sexism it is directed at all women. Women had a champion who would fight for all human rights and not just for some. If it was okay for Obama to draw 97 percent of the black vote because of black pride, I would think it would be okay for Hillary to get 97 percent of the womens vote for "women pride". Unfortunatly, we still have a majority of young women who think Girls Gone Wild is a great thing. Maybe women should have their reproductive choices taken away from them. Then they won't ever have to worry about having an abortion if...they are smart enough not to have unprotected sex. If an accident should happen and they become pregnant - well...sweetie, it is all the womans fault. So next time you see that really hot looking cutie pie - remember it is your body so don't get it pregnant sweetie! THEN YOU WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ROE V. WADE!

What Democratic woman would vote for John McCain whose own proposal for cutting VA expenses would exclude 'non-combat related' benefits for any PTSD or other emotional problems suffered by the 15% of female military combat troops who have been raped.
So much for his supporting the troops. Wonder what PUMA women have to say on this?

MsSwin,
What Democratic woman would vote for someone who voted to give immunity to telecommunications companies spying on Americans and whose Vice President supported the current bankrupcy laws which favored the credit card companies over consumers and who also supported the recording industry's war against downloaders?
Posted by: Elaine on 08/27/08 at 12:07 PM Respond
Elaine, you are quite the ignorant human being aren't you? Roe v. Wade goes much deeper than abortion rights. It is tied directly to the rights of women everywhere, in general.
I would it explain it to you "sweetie" but I'd have to use words with more than 2 syllables and you wouldn't be able to follow.
Short version:
You are an ignorant asshole, take your bitter b.s. elsewhere.
Posted by: Kb on 08/28/08 at 1:39 PM Respond
People are confused about PUMA because they believe 3 lies passionately.
1. There is no difference between Bush and McCain.
2. There is no difference between Obama and Clinton.
3. The issues important to me are exactly the same ones that are important to you.
I know that you passionately believe all three of those things to be true, but that is only because you cannot conceive of a world where the issues that are most important to you are not the same ones that are important to everyone. You are basing your conclusions to those three items based on an ego-centric view of the world and you cannot conceive of a possibility that there are others who view the world differently.
The YouDon'tHaveAnyChoiceSoSuckItUpAndVoteForTheSpecialInterestCandidateWeStickYouWith democrats would prefer I not be interested in whether or not the system is rigged, or whether it is inclusive. I don't have any other choice right?
The Economy under Bill Clinton was astounding and I believe Hill could have brought it back. If Hill can be like Bill then there was hope for the US. Obama supporters won't even utter the name Clinton unless they have to. Obama does not respect Bill's accomplishments, and he fails to inspire me to believe that he can replicate them.
I am a centrist Democrat and I can tell the difference between rhetoric of unification (with no track record of it) and a woman who has actually reached across the aisle. Look at how Obama handled the Clinton's, this is your great unifier? It's not about the cult of Hill, it is about the gap between rhetoric and reality and the prospect of one more extremely liberal politician failing to impress. The DNC hates centrist democrats and has suspended democracy to marginalize them.
And what is the carrot that you dangle in front of me to bring me back into the fold?? Roe v Wade. That's your issue not mine, and you are so sincere in your absolute blindness to that fact that it is amazing. Now hold onto your seat. That is the same view held by millions and millions of WOMEN, AND they're DEMOCRATS for OTHER REASONS. I also have uncertainty about Iraq. Now re-read the three lies at the top, don't you see how that changes them? I really really am facing a different choice than you imagine I am, an inclusive democracy is more important to me than Roe or Iraq.
