Of Fox News and Field Guides
Laura, back with three MoJo must-reads today. And one rhetorical question: Why are so many obese smokers against health care reform?
2) How much has Glenn Beck cost Fox news? An advertising boycott watch.
3) Who's really behind America's Israel policy? A photo field guide with names and bios.

Fox news is making money on Beck's show
As I understand it, Fox "News" is actually not losing any money because advertisers are canceling ad buys on Beck's show. It seems that they are simply moving their ads from his show to other shows on Fox. So Fox is not losing anything.
In fact, I suspect they are profiting from the controversy because they are getting great rating from Beck, which drives ad rates upwards, and they are also keeping all of the ads since they are merely being shifted to other Fox shows, and probably at higher rates, too.
Now, if there had been a move to get companies to boycott Fox (by which I mean all Fox networks and related entities), they might have gotten Fox's attention. Glenn Beck is laughing all the way to the bank!

Must read experiment
For the past month, whenever you tell me there is a must read article, I throw a 20 sided die. If it rolls 1-10 I read the article, if it rolls 11-19, I don't. If it rolls 20, I look at the last Kevin Drum blog, if it's about Inkblot, it's a saving throw and I read the article.
Then I plot whether I got laid that day or if I got a raise or my kids gave me a hug.
So far, it's 50/50, there's not been a whole lot of difference between reading must read articles and not reading them.
I will continue my experiments and reports.
Laura Interrupting
When I click on a topic in Drum's blog I want to read Kevin's take. Laura can post on her own blog can't she?

Kevin's kind enough to let me drop by a few times a week with stories you might like...other than not doing it, is there a way to make these short posts more useful?

Why so many obese smokers
Why so many obese smokers against health care reform?
Because they are themselves a health care problem, smoking and obesity is who they are.
Health care reform is a direct threat to their personalities and lifestyle. It tells them they are wrong, as if they didn't have enough problems. Public health care would be like a societal sanction against them.
